Double Albums That Could Be Single Discs, Part IV: Guns N’ Roses, “Use Your Illusion I + II”

7/27/06, 11:50 am EST

guns and roses use your illusion coverAll this week we’ve been editing down double albums that should have been single discs. Today’s project: Guns N’ Roses’ 1991 release Use Your Illusion, which was sold as two separate discs but was clearly one big album. (Oddly, this was debated at the time. The tipoff: calling the discs Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II.) Illusion was one of the longest albums ever put out by a major rock act: its total running time of about three hours even beat out famously excessive triple-disc efforts such as Sandinista! or All Things Must Pass.

But if Illusion had been shorter, could it have been the Great Lost Guns N’ Roses Album? Would the band have stayed together longer? Would the discarded tracks have been released as a passable Chinese Democracy a decade ago? We think so. Here’s our version of Use Your Illusion, the one that should have been:

1. Civil War
2. Dust N’ Bones
3. Bad Obsession
4. Don’t Cry (Original)
5. Right Next Door to Hell
6. Bad Apples
7. November Rain
8. You Could Be Mine
9. Yesterdays
10. Pretty Tied Up
11. Garden of Eden
12. Estranged

(total running time: 65:37)

Geek note: Unlike our first three entries of this double album-editing project (The Beatles’ White Album, Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti, and Bruce Springsteen’s The River), we’re not dividing our Use Your Illusion playlist into sides, because vinyl albums had become pretty much vestigial by the early ’90s.

I think the single-album Use Your Illusion should reflect the band as it was in 1990-91 rather than it’s earlier (and greatest) form of the time of Appetite. By 1990, the band made too much money, lost some of their destructive edge, and they created a different blend of songs. So here’s my list.

Yesterdays
Don’t Cry
Double Talking Jive
Right Next Door to Hell
Get in the Ring
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
November Rain
Dead Horse
Estranged
The Garden
Garden of Eden

The sleeve to these lp’s should have been made of toilet tissue. What a versatile concept this could of been. When listening to it’s awefullness;one could be presented with options of drying tears or wiping ass!

Bill | 2/3/2008, 3:21 pm EST

My personal preferance (this is basically all the heavy songs - i.e. Appetite for Destruction Part 2).

1. Get In The Ring
2. Shotgun Blues
3. You Could Be Mine
4. Right Next to Door to Hell
5. Perfect Crime
6. Locomotive
7. Garden of Eden
8. Double Talkin’ Jive
9. Don’t Damn Me
10. Coma

E-dogg | 1/7/2008, 5:28 pm EST

After “Appetite for Destruction,” the Illusion records were letdowns. The only tunes that burned a permanent place in my head:

Dust n Bones
14 Years
November Rain
Don’t Cry
Yesterdays
You Could be Mine

And I think “The Garden” would have been a much better song without the cheesy Alice Cooper interludes.

axlitomanson | 12/9/2007, 11:51 am EST

1. Dust N Bones
2. Pretty Tied Up
3. Bad Obsession
4. Civil War
5. Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
6. You Could Be Mine
7. Coma
8. Perfect Crime
9. Double Talkin’ Jive
10. Don’t Cry (Orig.)
11. November Rain
12. Estranged
13. Breakdown

I guess the only thing we could say without hesitation about this doubledisk album is that My World shouldnt be added. XDDD

Breakdown: Awarded as “The Most Underrated GNRs Song of all times” by me

Florian | 1/29/2007, 2:15 pm EST

Hi,
I found your blog via google by accident and have to admit that youve a really interesting blog :-)
Just saved your feed in my reader, have a nice day :)

zach | 8/9/2006, 2:15 pm EST

there are so many missing
it had to be released as two
breakdown is a must…its the most underrated GnR song there is and it among others would have to be on that list

outspokenmoron | 8/6/2006, 6:08 pm EST

you ain’t the first NEEDS to be on that list.

Kieran | 8/3/2006, 11:00 am EST

Revised list -

1. Right Next Door To Hell
2. Pretty Tied Up
3. Bad Obsession
4. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
5. Civil War
6. Don’t Cry
7. You Could Be Mine
8. Back Off Bitch
9. November Rain
10. Yesterdays
11. Dust N’ Bones
12. Estranged
13. Coma

Spreads out the balance of slow and fast. Coma must be in there, it’s epic.

J-Plett | 8/1/2006, 12:48 pm EST

I’ve always thought the best way to pair down these albums is to start by including all tracks written or co-written by Izzy Stradlin. His songs have a way of bringing out the best in Slash and Axl.

shookie blah | 7/31/2006, 1:41 am EST

shookie blah’s version is the best!
shookie rules!!!
shookie is dissapointed at many peoples omission of “shotgun blues” in favor for “brakdown”, “estranged”, “locomotive” or some other dumbass song. sure some of the lyrics in “shotgun” blues” are a little silly BUT it’s a good, fun, rockin song! the only thing missing from shookie’s list is “bad apples” which is omitted strictly cause the intro to the song is LAME. but it gets good later…..
“bad apples” is the shookie illusion b-side, along with “live and let die” and “knockin on heavens door” although the recorded version of the latter is totally flacid.
these are just shookie’s opinions!!!!
love them!!
shookieshookieshookiesh ookieshookieshookieshookieBLAH !

Brian H | 7/29/2006, 2:58 pm EST

Perhaps my list is too obvious, with too many of the popular tunes, as well as two covers, but if I was the producer, Use Your Illusion would look something like this:

1. Dust N’ Bones
2. Live and Let Die
3. Don’t Cry
4. You Aint the First
5. November Rain
6. The Garden
7. Civil War
8. Knockin on Heaven’s Door
9. Yesterdays
10. Breakdown
11. You Could Be Mine
12. Estranged

There ya go. 12 tracks, six from each disc and none of them could really be considered filler.

shookie blah | 7/29/2006, 2:08 pm EST

1. right next door to hell
2. you could be mine
3. don’t cry (original)
4. perfect crime
5. dust n bones
6. yesterdays
7. civil war
8. garden of eden
9. pretty tied up
10. you ain’t the first
11. shotgun blues
12. november rain
13. double talkin jive
14. coma

good job | 7/29/2006, 4:02 am EST

c’mon…keep on listing the songs!
keep on joking!
don’t forget to Use Your Illusion while you make your jokes here…

hugghhh!

tom | 7/28/2006, 9:40 pm EST

1 civil war
2 you could be mine
3 yesterdays
4 knocking on heavens door
5 double talkin jive
6 november rain
7 the garden
8 breakdown
9 bad apples
10 locomotive
11 estranged
12 don’t cry
13 live and let die
14 coma

ultimate set list

Brian Wallace | 7/28/2006, 3:15 pm EST

You’re right, Stephen. It was released in 1998 (only in America) and the it contained no songs with vulgarities in them. Hence, it could be sold at Wal-Mart and Kmart.

It’s just called “Use Your Illusion” and the track listing is:

1. Live and Let Die
2. Don’t Cry (Original)
3. You Ain’t The First
4. November Rain
5. The Garden
6. Dead Horse
7. Civil War
8. 14 Years
9. Yesterdays
10. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door
11. Estranged
12. Don’t Cry (Alt. Lyrics)

Brian

dave-gnfnr2k | 7/28/2006, 1:12 pm EST

it could have been

Dust N’ Bones
Don’t Cry
Bad Obsession
November Rain
The Garden
Coma
Civil War
14 Years
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
Estranged
You Could Be Mine

Bubba Ray Gracie | 7/28/2006, 12:52 pm EST

I was and remain a huge GNR fan, but there is really no way that anyone can honestly say that the Illusions albums represented some vision that couldn’t be pared down, and that they shouldn’t have gotten the music out quicker by finishing one album, then focusing on the next.

I like both Illusions albums, but there is a fair amount of filler there (though GNR filler is still better than average of course).

Personally I’d recommend a track list of:

Estranged
You Could Be Mine
Don’t Cry (the alternative one)
Civil War
Dead Horse
So Fine
Double Talkin Jive
Perfect Crime
Right Next Door to Hell
Breakdown
Locomotive
Bad Obsession

Stephen | 7/28/2006, 12:50 pm EST

Didn’t they actually make a single disc compilation of this? I’m almost positive they sold/sell one at Wal Mart.

The Choobs | 7/28/2006, 12:44 pm EST

Ishamel said, “trying to edit…you’d be leaving behind enough songs to make another album just as good.”

I’m not so sure ’bout that Ish.. When bands release great albums (Radiohead’s Kid-A comes to mind) and follow them up with the “leftovers” (Amnesiac), the results can be mixed — lots of great songs, but less cohesion on the album.

There are some bands out there that can whip out hundreds of songs — Prince, Guided By Voices — but still can’t produce more than the occasional great album. There’s something about the collection of songs that makes them better than the sum of each, and that’s why many double-discs and CDs over 60 minutes sound bloated by the end. How many CDs do we all own that we listen to for the first four songs and then go oon to something else?

Rob | 7/28/2006, 11:58 am EST

12. My World

Ben | 7/28/2006, 11:23 am EST

Breakdown HAS TO BE ON THERE
Coma HAS TO BE ON THERE
Locomotive HAS TO BE ON THERE
Don’t Damn Me HAS TO BE ON THERE
Dead Horse HAS TO BE ON THERE

My point is. It’s impossible. Those were 2 GREAT!!!! Albums. There is no need to combine them into 1. I could have done without My world or the Don’t Cry Alt Lyrics. Other than that, the Use Your Illusions are masterpieces. You can’t cut songs out.

Hank Snow | 7/28/2006, 11:03 am EST

Single Album? This should’ve been a 45.

1/2 of Estranged on one side…
The other 1/2 on the other…

Sucks!

good job | 7/28/2006, 9:28 am EST

this ’single cd’ thing is just a joke! and this joke is not funny…

Ian | 7/28/2006, 9:10 am EST

Mr Brownstone is from Appetite for Destruction.

krunch | 7/28/2006, 9:00 am EST

What? No Mr. Brownstone?

Brian Wallace | 7/28/2006, 8:26 am EST

JD. Pretty good but I’d at least leave off “Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” (too long) and put on two particularly nasty Taupin/John songs: “I’ve Seen That Movie, Too” (which ironically is quoted in Guns N Roses’ “You Could Be Mine”) and “Dirty Little Girl.”

Dannyboyy, “Sandinista!” was discussed on another comment board for pruned double albums. I’d cut “Hitsville UK” and “Lightning Strikes” and replace with “Rebel Waltz”, “Crooked Beat” and “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Brian

Dude | 7/28/2006, 8:05 am EST

I can’t find anywhere in this article saying what the next slimmed down record will be, but seeing as so far they’ve gone in chronological order and one from each of the past decades, I think that the next one they do will be from the 2000’s. Here’s the list of possible final albums for this:

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below-Outkast

Mezmerize/Hypno tize-System of a Down

Stadium Arcadium-Red Hot Chili Peppers

WILL.I.AM | 7/28/2006, 7:37 am EST

“civil war” is the best song ever of G’N'R n’ “back of bith” is one
hell of a song

WILL.I.AM | 7/28/2006, 7:32 am EST

THE ALBUM KAN’T B KOMPLEATE WITHOUT “civil war” “back of bitch” “nightrain” n’ “nockin on heaven’s door” it’s 4 of the best songs ever, n’ it’s made of one of the best bands ever

John O'Shea | 7/28/2006, 5:45 am EST

Here’s mine, one with the covers & the other without (which it seems is what RS was going for). I also managed (I think) to keep both versions under a hour, which is usually a good idea when it comes to single albums. RS, you went well over the 1 hour mark, which makes your version totally pointless. I mean what’s the point of trying to cut a double album down to a single when you can’t even make it less than an hour? If it’s well over an hour then you might as well go ahead with a double album.

With Covers

Civil War
Bad Obsession
Live and Let Die
Knocking On Heaven’s Door
Estranged
Pretty Tied Up
Double Talkin’ Jive
Don’t Cry (Original)
You Could Be Mine
November Rain

57.42 Minutes

Without Covers

Civil War
Bad Obsession
Yesterdays
Back Off Bitch
Locomotive
Prett y Tied Up
Double Talkin’ Jive
Don’t Cry (Original)
You Could Be Mine
Estranged

56.49 Minutes

Dannyboyy | 7/28/2006, 2:45 am EST

one of the easiests bloated albums to cutdown and make into an awesome single album would have to be Sandinista! here’s what i think the song list and order should be:

Side A:
1. Police on my back
2. Hitsville UK
3. The Magnificient Seven
4. Broadway
5. Charlie Don’t Surf
6. Street Parade
7. Corner Soul

Side B:
8. Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice)
9. Up In Heaven (Not Only Here)
10. Junco Partner
11. Something About England
12. Washington Bullets
13. Somebody Got Murdered
14. The Sound of the Sinners
(15. Bankrobber)

Bankrobber would have been an awesome “train in vain” type of addition to the album…
this is the best i can come up with no real hard thought, and i dont know if it would even fit on one record.. anyone else have their own opinion on this album?

Stains | 7/28/2006, 2:09 am EST

How could you leave off Locomotive? it’s easily the pick of both albums. The ultimate Use Your Illusion would be:

Right Next Door To Hell
Dust N’ Bones
Civil War
Perfect Crime
You Could Be Mine
Pretty Tied Up
Locomotive
Bad Obsession
Back Off Bitch
Double Talkin’ Jive
Garden Of Eden
Don’t Damn Me
Bad Apples

This would be about the same length as the RS list, but wouldn’t have the tiresome epics like November Rain and would have kicked ass the whole way through

ishmael | 7/28/2006, 1:41 am EST

Rolling Stone missed the boat on this one. As several people have pointed out, trying to edit what in classic album terms would essentially be a quadruple-album into one 65 minute disc is a fool’s errand. Yeah, you might have a solid masterpiece to rival “Appetite,” but you’d be leaving behind enough songs to make another album just as good. What you should have done is edit the two 80-minute discs into two 45-minute discs (a classic double album) that might actually deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as “London Calling,” “Blonde On Blonde,” or “Exile on Main St.” Then you could make room for inexplicably left-off tracks like “Dead Horse,” “Coma,” and especially “Breakdown.”

JD | 7/28/2006, 12:53 am EST

I wonder if they’ll chose to do EJ’s “Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.” As a whole it’s a great album but there are a couple of songs that are skipable. So suppose it was a single disc with 9 songs on it:

Side One(approx 23 and a half minutes):
1. Funeral for a friend(Love lies bleeding)
2. Candle in the wind
3. Bennie and the Jets
4. Goodbye yellow brick road

Side Two(approximately 22 minutes):
1. The ballad of Danny Bailey
2. All the girls love Alice
3. Saturday night’s alright for fighting
4. Roy Rogers
5. Harmony

So what you have is a nice 45 minute album.

arn | 7/28/2006, 12:51 am EST

back off bitch and double talkin’ jive…illusion is not illusion without these tracks…the rest i agree with.

JOHN | 7/28/2006, 12:22 am EST

As one of if not the biggest Guns fan on this board..i will save you the time. It is impossible to cut this album in half. There are too many good songs and way too many 8 minute epics to put on one album. It was what it was..it was the biggest band in the world blowing their entire load on 2 and a half hours of music that comes from all different areas and genres. It was a masterpiece. It was great to see a band put it ALL out there. There was something for everyone on it.

Brett | 7/28/2006, 12:21 am EST

Yes, cut down the wall.

Seamus | 7/28/2006, 12:11 am EST

Scratch “Little Miss Strange” from Idea One. I was unsure about that one.

Seamus | 7/28/2006, 12:09 am EST

I was pondering possible albums to be pared down. One that came to mind was George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass”. Love George Harrison, some really good songs on the album but the jams near the end seemed to be filler. I wouldn’t touch albums like “Blonde on Blonde” or “Exile on Main St.” But I was thinking about “Electric Ladyland”. Usually I wouldn’t condsider touching this one but I;m interested in some feedback.

Idea One:

Side One
Have You Ever Been(To Electric Lady land?)
Crosstown Traffic
Voodoo Chile
Little Miss Strange

Side Two
1983…(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)
House Burning Down
All Along the Watchtower
Voodoo Child(Slight Return)

Total Time: 49:55

Idea Two:

Side One:

Have You Ever Been…
Crosstown Traffic
Little Miss Strange
Come On Pt.1
Gypsy Eyes
Burning of the Midnight Lamp

Side Two:

Rainy Day, Dream Away
Still Raining, Still Dreaming
House Burning Down
All Along the Watchtower
Voodoo Child(Slight Return)

Total Time: 40:56

RockGod | 7/28/2006, 12:02 am EST

You can’t make Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 into one album because there are too many good songs to ommit… all we can wait is for Chinese Democracy. Guns N Roses saved music when it was in a great depression back in the late 80’s and I hate to say it but when the new album drops, they are going to be saving music again, and give us something real to listen to, thank god its been too long.

S-P | 7/27/2006, 11:24 pm EST

There is a difference between a double album and a rock opera. In the cases of double albums such as Tommy, Quadrophenia, and The Wall: sure, some of the songs could be deemed filler, but these records were made to tell a story, therefore the songs that are there are the ones that TELL THE STORY. How can you even THINK of cutting these ones down? I’ve kept my voice unheard for the past three days of this week-long experiment, but some of the posts here are starting to get ridiculous. Grow up, listen to these with an open mind, and appreciate these artists and their overbloated yet mind-blowing visions. Then get back to me.

mike | 7/27/2006, 10:08 pm EST

now heres a task for you rs, cut down the wall

Dennis | 7/27/2006, 10:06 pm EST

The original rs review praised both albums, and both albums are perfect thats why they dont need editing. If gnr thought we needed the
rs version of illusions then we would not have 2 honest albums. we would have one album that is tailor fit for the rock fans of that era. Instead we
have 2 pieces of art that commemorate the live fast, die young, and have fun ideals of the original gnr.
its only rock n roll folks
cya

b. shelley | 7/27/2006, 9:31 pm EST

Exile on Mainstreet, Blonde on Blonde and London Calling must remain untouched… these albums work as entire units (who could ever imagine L.C. without Lost in the Supermarked or Exile without Casino Boogie???) Respect these artist’s vision…. but i totally agree that Use Your Illusions was bloated (and begrudgingly admit that probably the River and White Album were too…. probably Tommy could be trimmed as well)

johnnyB | 7/27/2006, 9:07 pm EST

the main record that comes to my mind when i think of this, is mellon collie and the infinite sadness from the samashing pumpkins, great album as it is, but just cut some of the songs and youll have something totally amazing.
i think coma should be in the definitive list.

Fenton | 7/27/2006, 8:23 pm EST

my track list for the best album

chinese democracy
better
irs
there was a time
catcher in the rye
the blues
madagascar
rhiad and the bedouins

Miasta | 7/27/2006, 7:05 pm EST

Interesting idea. I may have to consider coming up with my own. Here are a few ideas for future double albums that I did not see suggested (though I didn’t read every post.)

1) Pink Floyd - The Wall (Good luck with that one.)

2) Metallica - Load and Re-Load (Ok, not technically a double album, but anyone that knows the history of those albums knows they might as well be.)

Monster | 7/27/2006, 6:05 pm EST

i would just like to point out that double albums are two vinyl records, and is vertually any cd over 50 minutes long. I don’t think i’ve ever experienced a double disc that was perfect all the way through and i think you should make a note of the extra length and impossibleness of the double disc shortening, b/c while some songs do suck, there are some great ones that will always be left out.

JNoles | 7/27/2006, 5:33 pm EST

I would have done it like this:

Double Talkin’ Jive
Perfect Crime
Live and Let Die
Don’t Cry
Locomotive
Civil War
Dust N Bones
You Ain’t the First
Breakdown
November Rain
You Could Be Mine

There was a bit of crap between the two disks, and I’m sorry, I was not impressed with Estranged. Too bloated.

Killa | 7/27/2006, 5:22 pm EST

The only songs that I would omit from the track listings of the Use Your Illusions would be:

Back off Bitch
Don’t Damn Me
Breakdown
Don’t Cry (alternative)

That’s not bad considering there are at least 4 filler tracks on most single albums.

Crewsilini | 7/27/2006, 4:47 pm EST

65 minutes? I’m glad you guys don’t work for the record companies (do you?). While I agree that not every CD should contain the full 80 minutes of music, but in this case, there are quality songs that could have filled up the disc.

Alex | 7/27/2006, 4:42 pm EST

perfect crime
bad obsession
double talkin jive
the garden
don’t damn me
bad apples
dead horse
coma
breakdown
pretty tied up
locomotive

Mikey | 7/27/2006, 4:35 pm EST

The only songs that I wouldn’t have put are Don’t Damn Me, Bad Apples, Shotgun Blues, My world. the rest are just fine for a great rock album.

McGuire | 7/27/2006, 4:31 pm EST

double disc should never be made… release the extra songs on b-sides, it takes away from the album…. more is not better, a 40 minutes classic record will be remebered forever, no?

matt | 7/27/2006, 4:31 pm EST

wow. I think I agree with RS here. Good work. Would be nice to see Locomotive and Breakdown on there though. 14 years would be perfect for Chinese Democracy :)

julian u. | 7/27/2006, 4:29 pm EST

1. civil war
2. the garden
3. don’t cry(orig)
4. locomotive
5. you could be mine
6. breakdown
7. november rain
8. knockin on heaven’s door
9. garden of eden
10. estranged

there you have it. I love coma, but like someone else mentioned, it should have been the centerpiece to a later album, especially with the abundance of 8 minute songs on my list already.

McGuire | 7/27/2006, 4:29 pm EST

hey megasudz, i agree 100% percent…. absolute sht

Al Dente | 7/27/2006, 4:27 pm EST

Illusions, as a double album, are hugely underrated. It’s “cool” to say it would have been so great if they had left out this and that, but which this and that they should REALLY be? Just read the favorites of different people commenting in this thread. Is there any song from the Illusion albums NOT mentioned yet as a must for this sort of double-album editing project? My World maybe…

Ask 100 people to make this cut to single album, and you’ll get 100 different tracklists. Who the hell is the authority to say who’s taste is the best?

Richard | 7/27/2006, 4:23 pm EST

1. You Could be Mine
2. Garden of Eden
3. Double Talkin Jive
4. Yesterdays
5. Locomotive
6. November Rain
7. Dust N Bones
8. Back Off Bitch
9. Pretty Tied Up
10. Civil War
11. Dead Horse
12. Estranged

I think this mix gets the combo of gritty, sleazy GNR and the big majestic epics just right.

I think songs like “Coma” or “Breakdown” could have been used as the center point of another album, a couple years down the road (94-95).

I would have let “Don’t Cry” and possibly even “Civil War” become those great GNR tracks that weren’t available on any album.

I think this version of “Illusion” would have shut some folks up about GNR not being able to match “Appettite”.

chris | 7/27/2006, 4:12 pm EST

Estranged and Coma are epic. What other band or artist has the capability of writing songs like these. Listen to the words, simply incredible.
Chinese Democracy starts now.
P.S As a RS reader I have one suggestion. Axl and the new Guns on a future cover and a nice review of the tour they are soon wrapping up.
Chris Langley BC

King Biscuit Flower Hour | 7/27/2006, 4:08 pm EST

What, no “Live and Let Die”? Even though it’s a Paul McCartney cover, it’s still essential to the album.

jubster | 7/27/2006, 4:01 pm EST

I’d rather:
ADD
Coma
Locomotive

SKIP
Dust N Bones
You Could Be Mine

Jon | 7/27/2006, 3:55 pm EST

Dude, you wanna cut tracks from “London Calling”?!?

I really don’t think that’s possible…blasphemy!!

Mayb e “Jimmy Jazz”… :-)

megasudz | 7/27/2006, 3:54 pm EST

This, or these, are the discs that got me “out” of G -n- R. November Rain, Don’t Cry, more like Don’t Puke. Not to mention those crappy bloated videos. Too bad I really loved Lies.

Jon | 7/27/2006, 3:52 pm EST

How about editing the recent Van Halen hits package, “Best of Both Worlds”?

Take out ALL the Haggar songs!!!

Or at least replace them with more DLR era Halen…

Dude | 7/27/2006, 3:52 pm EST

Interesting that Don’t Damn Me doesn’t make this list when the original RS review of Use Your Illusion I said it was the best song on the album.

Anyone know if there is an album for tomorrow and if so, what? My pick would be one of these:

Electric Ladyland - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

London Calling - The Clash

Exile On Main Street - The Rolling Stones

Blonde On Blonde - Bob Dylan

and for some very interesting single mixes…

Tommy and Quadrophenia - The Who

The Wall - Pink Floyd

David | 7/27/2006, 3:52 pm EST

There hasn’t been an official break-up announcement for The Tears but they have been dropped by their record label and Butler has gone back to working with McAlmont and Brett Anderson is currently working on a solo record.

It may take another ten years for these two to be in the same room together. Reports of renewed acrimony were denied by the band and publicity department.

If you don’t have it already, I’d look for the album on ebay. There definetly won’t be an American release any time soon. It’s too bad, though, cause even with all of it’s faults (ie. Butler’s over production & Anderson’s occasional lack of compelling lyrics) it’s still a pretty good record. Definetly something that could have been built on.

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 3:46 pm EST

Ok. This is off-topic from the GNR-Illusion thing but are “The Tears” no more?

The album wasn’t even released in America was it?

Brian

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 3:44 pm EST

“YOU Do” not “I do.” Maybe I was thinking about the wedding march-like strings at the begining. Suede were fantastic live supporting “Dog Man Star”, though. I saw them twice. They were so angry and focused and felt they had so much to prove.

Brian

David | 7/27/2006, 3:43 pm EST

As for a “complete” dog man star….Butler once posted on his website that he’d consider taking a crack at it but that was a good six years ago - before the whole Tears debacle.

David | 7/27/2006, 3:42 pm EST

Good to hear, Brian!

Yes, Butler had the music and idea for “You Do” around the same time but Brett Anderson wasn’t interested in it. It ended up being the only intended Suede track that he kept in is songbook after parting ways with the band and is definetly one of the best tracks that he ended up recording with David McAlmont.

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 3:38 pm EST

Plus, David, wasn’t “I Do” (McAlmont/Butler single) intended for that album?

Yes, a “complete” “Dog Man Star” would be fantastic.

Brian (another devoted Suede fan)

JLI | 7/27/2006, 3:32 pm EST

These are the ones that I would keep :

1. Live and Let Die
2. Dead Horse
3. Bad Obsession
4. Coma
5. Civil War
6. Locomotive
7. Estranged
8. You Could Be Mine
9. Double Talkin Jive
10. Back Off Bitch
11. Don’t Cry (Original)
12. Yesterdays
13. Dust N’ Bones

marc | 7/27/2006, 3:31 pm EST

i think live and let die is one of the best songs on the album and deserves to be on.

i agree with jeff, this mags list often are off, def their best guitarist list

David | 7/27/2006, 3:30 pm EST

Most intriguing album that never was (per Brian Wallace’s post) is Suede’s (a.k.a. The London Suede) second album “dog man star”. Granted it’s brilliant as is but Bernard Butler walked out (or was kicked out of the band depending on whose version you believe) before the completion of the recording sessions al though he wrote the music to all the songs. As a result…

1.) “The Power” was recorded note for note from a demo that he left behind

2.)”The Wild Ones” had it’s original ending chopped off and replaced with a pedestrian repeat and fade of the chorus.

3.) some Butler’s guitar parts were mixed down or edited out of several songs (most notably “Heroine” & “Daddy’s Speeding”)

4.) Original 16 minute version of “The Asphalt World” was knocked down to 9

&

5.) Producer Ed Buller overran the final mixes with echo and reverb that would have destroyed any other album that didn’t have such an amazing collection of songs.

…but i digress

Rock God | 7/27/2006, 3:22 pm EST

I dissagree with the notion that artists should keep their albums to 40 min. and trim their music to what only the casual music fan believes is relavant for an album. The more music the better. The only artist that can get away with that is Zeppelin and that is without saying.

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 3:02 pm EST

The funniest thing about this was that “Use Your Illusion” was at one point going to be six songs LONGER. In 1990 there’s some story about the band wanting to release the album as four separate discs each divided into “themes”. One was covers; one was heavy, aggressive, etc.

The ultimate geek list would be “albums that never were” such as:

- The Smiths’ “The Queen Is Dead” with the eight-minute title track.

- The Strokes’ “Room On Fire” produced by Nigel Goodrich

- Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” produced by Jim Steinem (Meatloaf.)

- Nirvana’s “In Utero” with “I Hate Myself and Want to Die” and “Verse Chorus Verse” on it.

- Squeeze’s “East Side Story” as a double album with one side each produced by Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds and Paul McCartney.

- What’s the lost Green Day album “Cigarettes & ?” The one they abandoned to make “American Idiot.”

The list could go on. Does anyone else know of any other intriguing “almost” albums?

Brian

Matt2.0 | 7/27/2006, 2:49 pm EST

Get in the Ring is my Favorite GnR song. Oh geez I wonder why they didnt include it? (sarcasm)

Jeff | 7/27/2006, 2:48 pm EST

Where the hell is LOCOMOTIVE???

Go back, pull the wax out of your ears, and listen to that track.

This is the same magazine that did ‘Greatest Guitarists of all Time’ and put Jack White as #17 and Eddie Van Halen as #70. Shame on your ‘lists’.

Roger Toonoot | 7/27/2006, 2:39 pm EST

If you were to boil Use Your Illusion down to a 45, it would be Civil War backed with Don’t Damn Me.

Why did you leave Don’t Damn Me off? This can’t be happening, people!

Anonymous | 7/27/2006, 2:38 pm EST

what about dead horse????? you guys probably don’t make albums for a living for a very good reason…axl would’nt let ;you.

peace out

PastyJournalist | 7/27/2006, 2:34 pm EST

It’s kind of weird that the original RS review of ‘Illusion I’ included an absolute rave of “Don’t Damn Me”, but that song is missing from your list. But different staff, different reviews, I know…

Right Next Door to Hell
Bad Obsession
Don’t Cry (Original)
Civil War
Coma
Live and Let Die
Don’t Damn Me
You Could Be Mine
Yesterdays
November Rain

Rockstar70 | 7/27/2006, 2:26 pm EST

Nothing can beat ‘Appetite’ but We could have gotten one unstoppable album instead of two good ones. 1.Right next door to hell 2.Dust n’ bones 3. Bad obsession 4.You ain’t the first. 5.Double Jive talkin’ 6.Shotgun blues 7.don’t cry 8.yesterday 9.don’t damn me 10.bad apples 11.Dead horse.

Mike | 7/27/2006, 2:17 pm EST

Knockin’ on Heavens Door needs to be there. I know it’s a cover…but it’s pretty much the same situation with Hendrix and “..Watchtower”. A Dylan song, done right by another artist. The GnR version is THE version. Especially in concert.

McGuire | 7/27/2006, 2:13 pm EST

this is the only list that should be posted…. lets here it!

next door to hell
perfect crime
you aint the first
bad obsession
double talkin jive
dont damn me
breakdown
pretty tied up
you could be mine
civil war

Philbee | 7/27/2006, 2:07 pm EST

You know you are a blind GnR geek fan if in your rock n’ roll soul you sing along to inspid crap like November Rain. Think they would have recorded that song if Axel did not make it big time? Only the video was more pathetic.

Ryan | 7/27/2006, 1:59 pm EST

Double Talkin’ Jive is awesome. Estranged? Meh. I do like the covers, tho…But, overall, the best whittled album so far.

Andrew | 7/27/2006, 1:54 pm EST

Breakdown, Breakdown, Breakdown.

That might be the best song on either disc. Of course, I also love the machine gun guitar on Don’t Damn Me, though Axl’s lyrics are a bit much on that one. And where is Coma?

Here is the no b-s version - the core of the albums - no filler.

1) Civil War
2) Yesterdays
3) Right Next Door to Hell
4) Don’t Cry (Original)
5) Breakdown
6) Estranged
7) Dust N’ Bones
8) Bad Apples
9) You Could Be Mine
10) Coma
Bonus track: My World - just kidding.

Ramsey Hassan | 7/27/2006, 1:50 pm EST

Interesting tracklist.

I think the same shoulda happened with STADIUM ARCADIUM.

The tracklisting should of been. . .

DANI CALIFORNIA
FORTUNE FADED
SNOW (HEY OH)
HUMP DE BUMP
DESCRATION
SLOW CHEETAH
TELL ME BABY
ESPECIALLY IN MICHIGAN
ANIMAL BAR
READYMADE
CHARLIE
21ST CENTURY
SHE’S ONLY 18
HARD TO CONCENTRATE
HEY
WET SAND

Jon | 7/27/2006, 1:46 pm EST

Hey Zach, where’s “Double Talkin’ Jive”? Izzy’s best! With the flamenco guitar outro…classic.

Don | 7/27/2006, 1:45 pm EST

The absense of “Get in the Ring” proves that a 12-year old version of myself is not working at Rolling Stone…

Here’s my version:
1. My World
2. My World (Remix)

That’s it! That song was the future. It’s the reason the band broke up, they simply could not follow “My World”

Jon | 7/27/2006, 1:44 pm EST

I’m perfectly willing to substitute “Locomotive” for “November Rain” in my mix…

And I agree with McGuire: “Don’t Cry” makes me ill.

McGuire | 7/27/2006, 1:36 pm EST

YOU NEED DOUBLE TALKING JIVE…. DONT CRY SUCKS, KILL NOVEMBER RAIN AS WELL

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 1:36 pm EST

No love for “Breakdown” or “Locomotive?”

Brian

McGuire | 7/27/2006, 1:36 pm EST

ZACH SUCKS

Zach | 7/27/2006, 1:33 pm EST

Using “Don’t Cry” as kind of the centerpiece, here is another alternate single-disc version to “Use Your Illusion”, running just under an hour (so vinyl could apply):

1 - You Ain’t The First
2 - Live and Let Die
3 - Don’t Cry (Alt. Lyrics)
4 - November Rain
5 - Dust and Bones
6 - Civil War
7 - 14 Years
8 - Yesterdays
9 - So Fine
10 - You Could Be Mine
11 - Don’t Cry (Original)
12 - Shotgun Blues

Jon | 7/27/2006, 1:31 pm EST

Alright, here’s my CDR:

1)Right Next Door To Hell
2)14 Years
3)Double Talkin’ Jive
4)Back Off Bitch
5)Yesterdays
6)Novembe r Rain
7)Dust N’ Bones
8)You Could Be Mine
9)Civil War
10)Pretty Tied Up
11)So Fine
12)Don’t Damn Me
13)Estranged

CB | 7/27/2006, 1:27 pm EST

Dust and Bones is the coolest song on the album. Long Live Izzy!

Rudy Pilfer | 7/27/2006, 1:26 pm EST

you need ‘perfect crime’ and ’shtogun blues’ on there….

booboo | 7/27/2006, 1:23 pm EST

this album must have been the begging of axel’s quest for the perfect album!

anybody remember his new gun’s album?

nico1138 | 7/27/2006, 1:17 pm EST

each vinyl of Use Your Illusion was alredy a double album , so I don´t thik it apply…
too many good songs!

(well, except “My World” )

Kieran | 7/27/2006, 12:54 pm EST

Just listened to your version on a playlist, and can safely say that all but the ending works.

I was skeptical at first upon reading that you would follow Garden of Eden with Estranged. I listened to the extremely fast, thrash metal Eden, and then listened as it was followed by such a slow, opposite number.

If you replaced Eden with Bad Apples, the album would seem alot more natural.

Brian Wallace | 7/27/2006, 12:39 pm EST

I’ve got:

Side I 25:12
You Could Be Mine
Double Talking Jive
Breakdown
Pretty Tied Up
14 Years

Side II 25:05
Dust N Bones
Locomotive
Shotgun Blues
Perfect Crime
Right Next Door to Hell
Garden of Eden

I eliminated (most of) the epics and the covers. I’ll take the sublime “Locomotive” over “November Rain” and “Coma” any day and “Breakdown” is the great lost GNR song.

My version clocks in at ten minutes shorter than “Appetite” and kicks just as much butt.

Brian

P.S. I saw GNR three times on the Illusion tour and if you had seen their version of “Bad Obsession” with the “976-horns” then maybe you’d be less likely to include it.
Very Vegas.

Kieran | 7/27/2006, 12:12 pm EST

Some interesting choices.
I wouldn’t have put Right Next Door To Hell, Bad Apples or Dust n’ Bones in there.
Where’s Coma? Your review of ‘I’ applauds the song, but no inclusion?
My list was -

1. Don’t Damn Me
2. Pretty Tied Up
3. Bad Obsession
4. Civil War
5. Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door
6. You Could Be Mine
7. Garden of Eden
8. Perfect Crime
9. Back Off Bitch
10. Double Talkin’ Jive
11. Don’t Cry (Orig.)
12. November Rain
13. Estranged
14. Coma

Looking at your list, however, i realise that my version does lose momentum at the end.
Also, it could be slightly too long?

Axl Rose | 7/27/2006, 12:06 pm EST

Bad Obsession should open the album and Civil War should close it. Dead Horse has got to be their. Back Off Bitch, too. Get rid of Estranged so I don’t make a terribly obnoxious video for it and if you don’t agree with me, get in the ring, motherf*%*$#

JZ | 7/27/2006, 12:00 pm EST

shotgun blues should have made the cut

johnson | 7/27/2006, 11:58 am EST

lean and mean. all killer and no filler.

slash would approve.

good work rs.
