Damn you, Hold Steady! How can any band be this good? Boys and Girls In America is the third straight chain-smoker from everybody’s favorite Brooklyn bar band. Has anybody made three albums this great in three consecutive years lately? The Replacements never did it. I guess Husker Du did it, ’83-’85, and Creedence, ’68-’70…but that’s the level the Hold Steady has already achieved.
Craig Finn motormouths his stories of doomed kids looking for love and drugs and fun (“He was Tennyson in denim and sheepskin / He looked a lot like Izzy Stradlin”), while the band steals riffs from Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, and .38 Special. Their 2004 debut, The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me, is probably my most-played album of the decade so far. On 2005’s Separation Sunday, they added a bunch of mock-Springsteen piano flourishes, but apparently not as mock as we all thought, because they’ve gotten even Bossier, with a title from a Kerouac quote (“Boys and girls in American have such a sad time together”). If there’s an instant anthem a la “Your Little Hoodrat Friend,” “Barfruit Blues,” or “Killer Parties,” it’s “Chillout Tent,” a sequel to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” with two young lovers meeting at the rock festival’s medical emergency area after too many mushrooms. Definitely a punk rock romance for our time, and a song only the Hold Steady could write.

My little hoodrat friend must have got to ya, Rob! Kudos on recognizing a phenomenal band just beginning to find itself. True poetry about disillusioned ladies in dive bars and contraband in smoky rooms; served on a platter of ass-kick bravado!
Clash and Roll | 7/27/2006, 1:45 pm EST
Um,,have you forgotten about the Clash ? The Clash (’77), Give ‘Em Enough Rope (’78) and London Calling (’79). And no Rolling Stone-London Calling did not come out in 1980.
chokingtara | 7/27/2006, 2:24 pm EST
the hold steady are indeed proving a consistently good group; they deserve a huge audience and free beer for the rest of their lives. regarding Rob’s query, now, i don’t know if it counts as “lately,” but for me the Fall had a pretty unbelievable four-album run in the 80’s: hex enduction hour (’82), perverted by language (’83), the wonderful and frightening world of the fall (’84) and this nation’s saving grace (’85). all hail mark e. smith, who’s prolly drinking for free right now…
Roger Toonoot | 7/27/2006, 2:41 pm EST
Glad to see the Hold Steady getting some must deserved acclaim.
Now, how about a lead review? and maybe venture beyond the usualy 4 stars.
Roger Toonoot | 7/27/2006, 2:46 pm EST
Wire had a pretty hot three-album run from 1977-1979.

rob sheffield obviously has his own agenda. these guys suuuuuck and what about the stones, beatles, dylan ect…aw yeah more bands than i can remember have made way better music in consecutive years. stay cool sheffield- i hope you feel indie
flynnie | 7/27/2006, 9:10 pm EST
The Rmanoes made four: The Ramones(1976), Leave Home (1977), Rocket to Russia (1977), Road to Ruin (1978)
The Rolling Stones: Beggar’s Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers (1968-71)
Elvis Costello My Aim is True, This Year’s Model, Armed Forces (1977-79)
Nirvana gets an honorable mention since Live in New York probably wouldn’t have been a commercial release of Kurt didn’t do himslf in (Nevermind, In Utero, Live in NY, 1991-94)
never heard of these guys. I’ll have to check them out
Me | 7/27/2006, 9:28 pm EST
Ha! Everyone’s objective and EVERYONE has an agenda towards music.
All the bands you guys mentioned sucked. Bob Dylan sucked. The Beatles sucked. That’s what I think, it’s my agenda.
Rob Sheffield’s obviously has an agenda, but he just happens to be a writer for a very popular publication. If you have a problem with what he says, don’t read him.
But I do have another agenda- that Rob Sheffield is a douche.

Talking Heads made ‘77 (A LANDMARK), More SOngs about Buildings and Food (78) another great album and Fear of Music (79), their best and the best new wave record ever. I think also Remain in Light was 80, so that’s four. THe best 1-4 bang out of the box out of any rock band (it’s too bad they lost the magic as they got more popular.
The Kinks also had a huge 4 in a row with Face to Facel Something Else; Village Green and Arthur (the best quadrilogy of consecutive releases ever (but this was after the Kinks hit their stride).
What about the complete Beatles: 13 albums and 1 double album in 6.5 years! The best career ever.
There are a ton of artists, esp in the 60s who could compete here.

lot’s of bands have made three exceptionally great albums even in 3 succeeding years. But no one has done it for awhile that’s all he’s saying. The Stripes did not make 3 great albums in a row they came close but the first album is not great. I think all the bitter people on here have not yet sat down and listened to the Hold Steady album’s. I have not heard the third yet but the first two are amazing and you just keep coming back to them over and over. They are the most consistent/prolific band in rock music, right now.

AC/DC
High Voltage (1976)
Let There Be Rock (1977)
Powerage (1978)
Highway To Hell (1979)
Back In Black (1980)
5/5 from AccaDacca.
Didn’t include Dirty Deeds (1976) as technically it’s compilation or indeed the classic live album If You Want Blood (1978)
Lobsters | 7/28/2006, 9:08 am EST
What do you mean The Replacements never had three great albums in a row? Up until “Don’t Tell A Soul” EVERY album The Replacements made was great. The Replacements were THE BEST.
Zuckerzeit | 8/7/2006, 10:48 pm EST
I think the point he’s making is that The Hold Steady are consistent in a way that recalls the classic periods of rock, punk, and indie. And, I disagree. The Replacements indeed released three consecutively great albums: Let It Be (1984), Tim (1985), Pleased to Meet Me (1987).
Chase | 8/9/2006, 11:20 am EST
Those aren’t consecutive years.
kevin | 8/23/2006, 8:22 pm EST
I’ll give the Hold Steady some props, but I don’t know if they’re as good as all that.
I second the Stripes and Talking Heads.
What about Cream?
Fresh Cream (66)
Disreali Gears (67)
Wheels of Fire (68)
All in RS Top 500.

Hi morons. Learn to read. He said “three consecutive years” (run & look up the word “consecutive”) & he said LATELY. HE SAID “LATELY.” That means RECENTLY. Not Bob Dylan, The Clash, The Replacements, therefore. IN RECENT YEARS.
