Pete Townshend is cheesed off at his Who bandmate Roger Daltrey, and Townshend is going on at length about it on his website. The point of contention: The Who have been offering live webcasts of their European tour dates at thewholive.tv for $10.00 a pop, with all proceeds going to charity. But Daltrey has apparently had some concerns about the project, so now they’re going to stop – and Townshend is annoyed.
He writes: “Roger seems to think when I provide bandwidth for the Who website, and for Live streaming, he is being exploited in some way and wants a piece of the future ‘profit.’ Don’t think there is much chance of profit when it is all aimed at charity.” Townshend has even set up a hotmail account for fans to e-mail Roger to convince him to change his mind.
Pete gets more personal in a later post: “Roger is my partner in the Who,” he writes, “He is not my partner in anything else. We love each other but we are not regular social buddies like Bono and Edge, we do not discuss or share ideas, and we have no unified joint vision or strategy for the Who or for creative projects in general.” Read all about the feud in mind numbing detail here, here and here.

“The Who”, no matter what form, especially the old days, however, seemed to be more productive when Pete and Roger were controvert with each other. I have no idea how that will be relevent today, but PT is always right….

I love the who. especially teenage wasteland. that is their best song from the past 10 years. rock on. i love the radio.
fred | 7/26/2006, 9:44 pm EST
Fletch – The Who don’t have a song called “Teenage Wasteland”, they do however have a song called “Baba O’Riley”, but it didn’t come out in the last 10 years. If you know nothing about the subject, you shouldn’t comment.
Tom Waits | 7/26/2006, 9:44 pm EST
Oops! You’re an idiot Fletch there is no song called teenage wasteland
Joe | 7/26/2006, 9:49 pm EST
C’mon Fred and, um, “Tom.”
Give the boy a break. He likes his little Who song. Besides, who’s cared about the Who since 1978?
In fact, that’s a pretty good name for the new Who disc which may (not?) come out: Who cares?
nut | 7/26/2006, 10:27 pm EST
yeah “teenage waistband” rocks!

Could you imagine Paul and Ringo going out on tour as The Beatles? Hey, Pete and Roger… give it up, guys. It’s OVER.
bob pridden | 7/27/2006, 12:20 am EST
sensationalism at its finest…
having followed pete’s webcasting from its infancy (in the attic) to his grandiose streams of live shows, i get a different feeling on the “feud” of pete & roger. what I thought pete was saying was that roger doesn’t see wasting time from the most important thing to him (the live show) on something that doesn’t make sense to him as a promotional or commuicative vehicle. yes roger is, self-admittedly i might add, lacking knowledge & experience in the technology areas. but pete also took on these ground-breaking projects with his own time & on his own dime without much, if any, input from roger. pete is trying to make roger see the worth of what he is trying to do & recognizes the fact that roger should have a say in what represents “the who” as a brand & musical entity. i think pete isn’t annoyed at roger as much as you’re trying to make it seem. i think pete has hit a creative wall with the “in the attic” show & the streams in general to try to figure out a product that will represent the who properly with roger’s blessings. he asked for input from the fans to show roger that what he’s trying to do is viable & can be a great communicative tool if done correctly.
i have paid for all of the streams that i have watched & have not been disappointed in the clarity of audio or video. really great stuff.
big dave | 7/27/2006, 3:34 am EST
hey Will Cate, could you imagine John and Paul (by themselves) going on tour as the beatles? I bet you could, and do.
Wharf | 7/27/2006, 9:06 am EST
Having followed the conversation on Pete’s website and watched the PPV. I agree with Bob Pridden’s view. Pete is more annoyed at the inability of Roger to see the benefit than he is at Roger.
Your Scandalous headline has as much merit as the body of your piece.

Looks to me that RS is trying to make somethign out of nothing here; if you read the web diaries in context and *in full*, you will see that Pete is HAPPY to accept Roger’s stance on this at the moment. Pete is in no position to make any demands on Roger or his image in the same way that Roger is fully able to hold sway on how is is being “used”. Your article here is only worthy of a place in the pages of The National Enquirer – rubbish!

If you don’t care about the Who, why are you bothering to post? And you who say that Paul and Ringo wouldn’t go out as the Beatles: So what? Musicians play music… they don’t quit when they are 30. Remember Rock n’ Roll is about REBELLION– so if you expect musicians to please you and conform to your expectations of when to quit or what to call themselves, tough luck. If you want young pretty conformists, go listen to Christina Aguillera.

Please re-read Bob Pridden’s comments. (How many of you even know who Bob is?) He does an excellent job of summing up the real content. Pete wasn’t ripping on Roger. He was sharing their different perspectives and the impact of those gaps. Shame on you, Rolling Stone, for taking Pete’s comments out of context. I hope you don’t succeed in discouraging Pete from sharing so openly with his community of fans. His diary pages are an amazing conduit (as is Rachel Fuller and Mikey Cuthbert’s In the Attic). petetownhend.com is the Pete Townshend Pages (how many of you get that reference?) of the 21st century. We’ve all been blessed to have the abundant wealth that is ITA and the streaming Who2 video of the European Tour. I would love to talk to Roger about it. I think I would be able to help him understand how it’s of value to him and the building of the Who brand. It’s a new paradigm and quite simply, when it comes to technology and its marketing applications, Pete’s ahead of the curve and Roger’s behind it. No value judgement. Just observation.

Rolling Stone = People Magazine

Wow…had I not read Pete’s Diary’s first, I don’t know what I would have thought about your story. Did Andy Greene even make an attempt to read all of what Pete had to say? I’ve been a devoted fan of Rolling Stone longer than I’ve been a devoted fan of The Who, and I’ve never been more disappointed in a piece I’ve read in my favorite magazine. Previous posters are right, puts me more in the mind of People, National Enquirer, or worse yet, Jann’s other mag: US Weekly. Please don’t blur the line between the two magazines, Jann. Keep the standards you have set for RS as high as ever.
trrish | 7/28/2006, 8:28 pm EST
Not to mention, if Andy Green or anyone else bothered to watch In The Attic yesterday, you would have heard Pete describe the situation quite differently.
Mojave Joe | 8/2/2006, 5:19 pm EST
RS’s reporting here is terribly disappointing, as other have stated. What do you have to say for yourselves RS?
Pete | 8/2/2006, 10:12 pm EST
Hey, don’t beat up on Fletch! He likes the Who! Experts and Who junkies are not the only ones here, and all are welcome, right!?

Let’s keep this going ! Noone’s commented in a while. I LOVE The Who and Pete Townsend melts my heart and burns my soul like no other! There’s nothing anyone could do or say to take my Pete away, so there…Thank God for Pete Townsend and The Who. I hope they (Pete and Roger)tour forever! They are much more capable than some of these burned out beer-bellied losers.
Rachel Titley | 9/18/2007, 8:52 am EST
There is actually as song called Teenage Wasteland, but it’s a Pete solo which came from the aborted Lifehouse project. I’ve never heard it, but I’ve heard of it. It’s a sort of pub quiz level gem of information.
