pavement wowee zowee

  • Cool people agree: the secret best Pavement record is Wowee Zowee, which is about to get the same deluxe reissue treatment as the first albums. May they never run out of rarities, alternate versions, and extra tracks. Also. REUNION please. Thank you.
  • Mine what’s left of your pure love for R.E.M via a new Best Of/rarities compilation, which does, actually, sound really, really cool.
  • The air services dude who was busted for planting video equipment on Michael Jackson’s private jet was sentenced to 8 months in federal prison.
  • We love Fall Out Boy. The least important thing they do is make music. This time the band become emo Barbie dolls to be sold at Hot Topic nationwide. Seriously.
  • Legendary producer Butch Vig leaves the comforts of home to produce the new Jimmy Eat World record in Tempe, Arizona.

I wouldn’t buy another R.E.M. record if it featured ten minutes of Michael Stipe being deep fried.

I wonder how Rolling Stone reviewed Wowee Zowee when it came out.

It couldn’t have been two stars, could it?

johnnygunit | 7/25/2006, 11:11 am EST

Wait a sec…Rolling Stone knew Wowee Zowee existed when it came out? I’m truly impressed! This bands influence is everywhere today and certainly well deserved. They are among my favorite bands of all time and Steve Malkmus is your hero.

M-A-L-K!

Elizabeth Goodman | 7/25/2006, 11:24 am EST

Malkmus is my personal hero. It’s true. He manages to be a genius and not fucked up at the same time. Very rare.

Oh and BTW, yes, we gave Wowee Zowee 2.5 stars when it came out
(www.rollingstone.com/pavement ) but redeemed ourselves by allotting it 4 stars in the RS album guide, and it’s our music editor’s favorite Pavement album … so we humbly request some points for that.

johnnygunit | 7/25/2006, 1:18 pm EST

Ok, points awarded for redemption, and you guys do tend to honor his solo recordings and the Silver Jews. So props Bethers! Malk rocked at Bonnaroo…

PS- Just to gossip it seems Malkmus had so much fun at Bonnaroo that he was all warm and cozy to the idea of a Pavement reunion…http://www.brooklynv egan.com/archives/2006/06/soni c_youth_bon.html

Actually, no reviewers were kind to Wowee Zowee when it appeared out of the ether. Just like Rivers Cuomo and Pinkerton, SM was tarred and feathered for being a self-indulgent wanker. Took a little time, I think, for crits to realize that were (are) his best characteristics.

When I was a little kid I fell off my ten-speed and scraped my knees something fierce. Asphalt is a friend to no one.

The Playlist | 7/25/2006, 6:19 pm EST

Secret best album, oh that’s what the cool kids are supposed to think, but umm, no. Half a great f–king album? Certainly, but it’s about 7 songs too long which does not make for a great “album.” Lots of classic Pavements songs that rival their best material? Check. Tons of throwaway, tossed-off songs and filler? Check. WRONG.

The Playlist | 7/25/2006, 6:24 pm EST

Just like Pinkerton, every overlooked record soon because a cause celebre with an overinflated worth. Calm down, ppl. Also? I think Elizabeth Goodman should be fired for writing f–k on Rolling Stone LLC’s website. Wait til Jann gets my fwd.

oh how i adore pavement.
