The Rolling Stones Need Your Help

7/25/06, 12:28 pm EST

rolling stonesThe Rolling Stones will head back to the States in September for a series of dates stretching into late fall, Billboard reports. The band also plan to include one of their fabled “young, contemporary opening acts” on the tour but have yet to announce which one. Opening for the Stones is a serious right of passage for young bands, kindove like getting the Bono talk about how to handle fame, or discovering one of the two Davids (Bowie or Byrne) in the audience at your show. Which young upstarts are worthy of the Stones’ endorsement?

We nominate:

The Raconteurs
Arcade Fire
Dirty Pretty Things
Giant Drag
The Noisettes

I’m not gonna do what everybody thinks I’m gonna do and mercilessly ridicule Rolling Stone for supporting Arcade Fire even though the magazine knew nothing of their existence until Funeral had already change 2004’s musical landscape. Must have been easy to rate that record 4 stars when the whole indie community loved this record for months ahead. Better late than never RS. The live show is INTENSE and one ticket will make you a believer…”Every time you lose your eyes!!!!”

The Raconteurs

I’ve heard a rumour of the Stones playing Zilker Park in Austin and if that’s true – I’m there.

AlmostFamous | 7/25/2006, 1:39 pm EST

Absolutely nobody.

I’m as big a Stones fan as it gets, but I wouldn’t wish opening for them on my LEAST favorite band. At every North American Stones gig the place is half empty when you hit the stage, you’re only given one tiny bit of the sprawling set to work with, they don’t make full use of the sound or lights, and the crowd that IS there doesn’t give a rat’s ass about your new sound anyway.

LIBERTINE | 7/25/2006, 2:15 pm EST

THE RACONTEURS..BEST NEW BAND IN YEARS…PERIOD!

Leslie | 7/25/2006, 2:23 pm EST

I’d wanna see DPT with them

Lobsters | 7/25/2006, 2:51 pm EST

I pick Ted Nugent.

dave matthews band is the better band to open rolling stones

Geoff | 7/25/2006, 3:02 pm EST

The bands nominated are great bands but how about Sam Roberts they released their great followup a few months back. I have seen them numerous times and they put on a great show and they are good old guitar rock like the Stones. Sam Roberts doesn’t get the credit they are do in the States and this would be great to open everyones eyes to this great band from Montreal, Canada. They are true road warriors like the Stones.

Just my two cents.

Dustin | 7/25/2006, 3:06 pm EST

Dave Matthews Band? Are you kidding?

Gary | 7/25/2006, 3:13 pm EST

System Noise a band out of NYC. Give a good new band a real break. Check out their website at System Noise NYC. Just a thought.

The_Scho | 7/25/2006, 3:23 pm EST

I would vote for Wolfmother.. Arcade Fire does not need the Stones

sam riesen | 7/25/2006, 3:24 pm EST

How about the best to young bands- the strokes, or the kings of leon, or the worlds best young, contemporary band- Pearl Jam, could give it another go with the stones.

GO HABS | 7/25/2006, 3:24 pm EST

“Arcade Fire” is great.
But “Mobile”, another Montreal band has a great sound and stage presence. Would be a great way for American audiences to hear these guys.

Lee Majors | 7/25/2006, 3:27 pm EST

Somtimes it feels like I’m getting too much fiber in my diet. But I just love whole grain crackers and I can’t eat enough of them! Oh well!

jj | 7/25/2006, 4:04 pm EST

arcade fire. duhh dude

Nick | 7/25/2006, 5:04 pm EST

It would be cool if the Stones would ‘help’ out a band like Maximo Park, or possibly the arctic monkeys, picture this: the best new British bands w one of the greatest of all time. Just a thought, not to jump on the band-wagon but the Raconteurs would be awesome too.

charly_was_here | 7/25/2006, 5:18 pm EST

keane
babyshambles
kelly osbourne… jajajahaha

skerr | 7/25/2006, 5:30 pm EST

Sam Roberts for sure. Show Sam and the boys some respect. These guys are great. They already rocked Live8 and SARSfest, now its time for them to break out of Canada.

Jim | 7/25/2006, 5:36 pm EST

Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley!
2 of the Stones’ biggest influences and they can can still play!!

Jim | 7/25/2006, 5:40 pm EST

If you had a few acts as the Stones did when they had J. Geils and George Thorogood open years ago…you could have Chuck and Bo, and still bring out the White Stripes or The Strokes or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Jim | 7/25/2006, 5:41 pm EST

Or a newly reformed/rehabilitated Libertines!

VictorBockris | 7/25/2006, 6:10 pm EST

Sam Roberts would be perfect. Anyone who’s listened to either of his albums or seen him live would agree. Plus he’s about due some stateside success. SAM ROBERTS!

Tom Petty, The Who | 7/25/2006, 6:29 pm EST

Rolling Stones put on a great show, it doesn’t really matter. who opens- But if they could actually intertwine some songs – oh that would be amazing. I am not picking from that list because if you read the other bands that opened for them in the past–WHERE ARE THEY NOW- so its pointless

But both of those I just mentioned on the top are going on tour- it would be Pandomonium-

j. farinacci | 7/25/2006, 6:43 pm EST

well, Sam Roberts Band has what it takes to open for the Strolling Bones show . I’d like to see Keef come and play with Sam’s mates ya know!

giovanni in baie d'urfe land | 7/25/2006, 6:52 pm EST

Sam Roberts would make a perfect match. Keep it up Sam it’s sounds great.

Holly | 7/25/2006, 10:18 pm EST

Arcade Fire puts on a fantastic show with tons of energy. One song’s worth of time with that ballsy little keyboardist girl and you’re hooked for life.

Arcade Fire deserves it.

only pick bands who know how special it is, and not the ones who are so new and hot right now that they actually think they are better than the stones. bring back ones from the first n. american leg. nothing was cooler than seeing eddie vedder sing wild horses with mick

Justin James | 7/26/2006, 6:26 am EST

Kings of Leon…perfect opener for the Rolling Stones. anyone agree?

cjones | 7/26/2006, 6:48 am EST

after reading the list, i gotta agree with the raconteurs and sam roberts. i know, canadian brotherly love but sam roberts is really rock’n'roll talented (i don’t own any of his music but it would be a good fit) and almost like gord downie with hair or burton cummings wit less of a ‘fro than ben wallace..
i’d like to see the arcade fire open and also …and you will know us by the trail of dead. they rule live, i saw the guy throw a bass drum into this lady’s face. it was cool.

KT | 7/26/2006, 12:40 pm EST

I concur, Kings of Leon,The Strokes,Arcade Fire,Pearl Jam and
The Racnteurs would all be great openers.
Yes, Wolfmother could well be the heirs to classic rock, but they need to put out some more better developed tunes before they’re worthy of opening for the Stones.

Jimi | 7/26/2006, 12:46 pm EST

Pearl Jam!They did it before they can do it again!!!

Scurvy John | 7/26/2006, 2:56 pm EST

Ian McLagen & The Bump Band would blow any new band off the stage AND complement The Stones.

superman | 7/26/2006, 2:59 pm EST

love the Stones, but they’ll never do another show with the Who. Each time it’s happened, Mick et al have walked away with their tail between their legs (Rock ‘n Roll Circus, anyone?). I like the idea of Buddy Guy. That’s a good mesh and a wonderful warm up while sitting down.

Christian | 7/26/2006, 2:59 pm EST

Well, if you wanted to put a Stones cover band in there, you could invite the Hives (note: they are completely unoriginal).

However, you could ALSO go for Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, Flaming Lips, Sonic Youth, The Futureheads, Franz Ferdinand, Weezer (if they weren’t breaking up), Kings of Leon, The Decemberists, and even Decibully. MY VOTE? The White Stripes. Not the Raconteurs, though they are newer on the scene. If they played more of their early stuff, the Stripes would fit in PERFECTLY at a Stones show!

godamnit | 7/26/2006, 3:22 pm EST

The Strokes for sure

The Choobs | 7/26/2006, 3:32 pm EST

I’m only half serious about some of these – but you’ll propbably guess the wrong half:

• Os Mutantes
• The Cars with Todd Rundgren
• The SF Mime Troupe
• Donald Rumsfeld
• TV on the Radio
• The Flaming Lips
• Ringo Starr and his Travelling Allstar Band
• Any Rolling Stones cover band
• Oprah
• Bill and Hill
• Whatever’s left of the Grateful Dead
• Whatever’s left of the Wailers
• The Secret Machines
• Tony Bennett

OR the Stones could just play a 3-1/2 hour set and f$%k the openers. I vote for a full acoustic set — a real set, not just three songs — followed by a long-ass electric set.

Jason Dylan | 7/26/2006, 3:44 pm EST

The Colour. Hands Down.

The Black keys can open for Radio Head but they would better open for the old ass Stones. The Keys might remind every one of the importance of blues/roots music when creating “original” music and show the stones the youthful energy that once made them great.

After they sign on maybe you get Santana, CSN, The Dead, the remaining members of Jefferson Airplane (especially Marty Balin), and a Gram Parsons cover band. Of course the Parsons cover band would have to play some Flying Burrito Brothers songs. One big traveling Altamont!!!! Sounds good to me. Maybe Mick Taylor can join the Stones just for this leg of the tour. Can’t wait!!!

RACONTEURS!!!!!!! JACK WHITE AND MICK –IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT!

Tellin'_like_it_is | 7/27/2006, 2:33 pm EST

I hear that if the opening bands want to stay and watch the Stones’ set, they have to PAY to do so. This is obviously not the same band who once turned down the opportunity to be Knighted by the Queen of England because of the way they were initially persecuted for their Rock & Roll sound/image.

It may be a “Right of Passage” to open for the Stones, but you still have to pay the toll.

How Un-Rock & Roll can you be?

Leslie | 7/27/2006, 3:02 pm EST

Anyone who’s seen both Arctic Monkeys and the Raconteurs know that the Raconteurs will be a much better candidate for the Stone’s opening act. I was bored at the Arctic Monkey’s show, whereas, I was rockin’ out all night to Jack White and his awesome band. Definitely the Raconteurs should open for the Stones. Hell, they might even upstage the Stones.

Musik Pirate and Fortune, I can tell you both from experience that Wolf Mother, Arctic Monkeys and We Are Scientist rock live. I had the privilege of seeing all three of these bands in June in Atlanta. One three separate days. I also saw Tapes ‘n Tapes that weekend as well. Seeing Wolf Mother again at Lollapalooza, as well as a baker’s dozen of other bands, then seeing The Walkmen at the end of August, as well Wu Tang, then seeing We Are Scientist. Twice. In September in Florida. Then seeing Tapes ‘n Tapes again in October in St. Augustine.

P.S. Bruno, Dave Matthews Band blows worse than Bon Jovi. I’d rather see Loverboy or Klymaxx live than Dave Matthews.

Ian | 7/28/2006, 10:15 am EST

They should have The Hives open for them. Howlin’ Pelle does such a great job copying Mick’s moves (he’s better than Mick) that Stones fans would get a kick out of it. Not to mention their music kicks ass.

Thunder7 | 7/28/2006, 11:12 am EST

A new band should open for them. Robby Roadsteamer.

The Choobs | 7/28/2006, 12:38 pm EST

I’ll say it again…The Stones should just play a 4 hour show and f$%k openers. I vote for a full acoustic set —- a real hour+ set, not just 3-4 songs —- followed by a long-ass electric set. Get Thievery Corp to play between sets, invitge a special guest or two to each show (Mick Taylor anyone?!) and bam, there’s your BEST EVER Rolling Stones show.

JEFF JOHNSON | 7/28/2006, 12:40 pm EST

KINGS OF LEON. CAN’T MAKE OUT A WORD THEY SAY BUT LOVE THE VIBE. VERY EARLY R&R FEELING.

Christian | 7/28/2006, 1:08 pm EST

Alright, if we’re just looking for a rocking set, We Are Scientists, Metric, Flogging Molly, or MUSE would be fantastic. I maintain that the perfect fit would be The White Stripes. And I also believe that there SHOULD be an opening band, because The Stones alone aren’t worth the ticket price. Yeah, I said it, and I definitely meant it.

The Choobs | 7/28/2006, 2:16 pm EST

“The Stones alone aren’t worth the ticket price.”

NO BAND is worth what they charge. I know it’s a free market, but it’s not like they need the money. I’d rather they skipped all the pyrotechnics and lights and just toured with a decent sound and light rig and just rocked! The best part of their tours for years by far has been the stripped down set in the middle. And if they just did that sort of show, they’d be worth something more than the average band for sure!

Thunder7 | 7/28/2006, 3:47 pm EST

Metric opened for them at Madison Square Garden and they were awe-inspiring.

Dr. J. | 7/28/2006, 10:30 pm EST

I’d pay any ticket price to see the ‘69 Stones. I suggest that, instead of worrying about opening acts, they simply get the Bloods or the Crips to work as security, to bring back some of that old dangerous energy.

just to see the look on Jaggers face… just tell him it was MIchael Kohl’s idea and then Mick will agree to go along with it.

Seriously though? Sam Roberts would get my vote, at least for any Canadian dates.

A great young act such as John Mayer would be nice to open. How about the Hives?

Mike | 7/29/2006, 6:09 pm EST

The openers for the stones should be the DMB, theyve worked together before in the late 90’s, and it would be awesome for them to do it again.

Black Label Society

o yea trey should open that would be kickass

Talk Show Smart-Ass | 7/29/2006, 8:01 pm EST

Stones lost me after Some Girls, and I was still in High School. They’re just corporate darlings. Nothing more. Any band that aspires for the same should open for them. Back Street Boys, maybe?

Rob | 7/29/2006, 9:26 pm EST

Guns N’ Roses of course… unless they have their own US Tour by then… in which case why not give Towers Of London a go!! Take the most anti-social band in the UK to America!!!

The Stones do NOT need an opener…

bands that are this established should be playing 3 hour shows of thier OWN to off set the outrageous ticket prices they charge..

as many fans as the stones pack in, there is no one band that everyone would agree on, so just have none.

ET | 7/30/2006, 3:23 pm EST

Sam Roberts

ef | 7/30/2006, 3:27 pm EST

The Electric Shades of Blue, from Lopez Island, Washington! They’re all 16 years old and amazingly good … they defintely would give Stones’ fans a buzz!

Speaking of getting a buzz, I know they’re hardly new, but the Pretty Things would also be able to blow the Rolling Stones off the stage.

And I’ll second the recommendation for Sam Roberts, or fellow Canadians Sloan (who opened for the Stones somewhat recently in Boston; anyone see that show?) …

As for the Who? Forget it! The Stones should open for them, not the other way around.

Reunited New York Dolls….Sammi Yaffa from Hanoi Rocks on bass, they can still put on a hell of a show.

mark | 8/3/2006, 9:17 am EST

The Colour would be awesome with The ‘Stones!

johnny | 8/3/2006, 4:50 pm EST

Definitly Guns N’ Roses, they’re just coming back to the States now. They were going to open for the Stones for two (or was it three) shows in Germany, but the shows had to be postponed due to Keith’s accident. Reunite GNR and the Stones for the first time in over a decade and a half.

AB | 8/3/2006, 5:47 pm EST

I like to see Wilco in there….I would definately go to see the Stones with Jeff Tweedy and co opening. My pic would still be Trey though. I wasn’t able to get to a show with Trey opening, and I’m kicking myself for it. Trey with anyone as a band opening for the Stones would be great. Of course I’d love to see Jon, Page, and Mike with him, but that’s obviously not going to happen. :(

Tea Leaf Green

Ted | 8/10/2006, 2:12 pm EST

Although the old boys might have lost a step or two with age, they can still rock out. It is simply incredible they sound like they do. Inhuman. Come on… $100 to see the best RR band of all time? Well worth it even if they are past their peak. And keith… will never die. Guns n’ roses would be sweet if axel hadn’t become a huge tool… sweet cornrows. Their show in 69 or whatever would have been the best show in history. I would loose one… no two fingers to have been at that show. Next best thing… Velvet revolver!!!
PS The Stones are not only legends because of their fantastic music, but because they have remained as unaffected by fame as possible while still being rock stars. Any other band would have spiralled out of control with the fame those guys have had for years and years. Liverpool trash couldn’t handle it like the stones.

Ted | 8/10/2006, 2:15 pm EST

Brandon Kennedy | 8/11/2006, 5:39 pm EST

I’ll be at the show in Louisville on Sept. 29 and I’d love to see:

- Pearl Jam
- The Arcade Fire
- Broken Social Scene
- The White Stripes
- Gnarls Barkley
- Tom Petty

Ted | 8/14/2006, 3:31 pm EST

Right on “Brandon Kennedy.” although pearl jam would be awsome, they would need to be a headline band.

bajalizz | 8/18/2006, 10:09 pm EST

I dunno but I want tickets

DEAN KUSCHELL | 8/23/2006, 2:02 pm EST

FOR THE LAST TIME THE ROLLING STONES ARE NOT CORPORATE SELLOUTS.
I’VE SEEN THE BAND EIGHT TIMES NOT INCLUDING SOLO KEEF AND WOODY OUTINGS. PEOPLE WHO SLAG OFF THE STONES ARE JEALOUS THAT THEIR FAVORITE BANDS CAN ONLY LAST A YEAR. NOBODY SLAGS OFF B.B. KING,
CLINT EASTWOOD CAUSE THEY’RE PAST SIXTY. AND FOR THE FINAL TIME STOP COMPARING THEIR MUSIC TODAY FROM WHAT THEY DID 25-YEARS AGO.
HEY, BABE RUTH DID NOT HIT A HOME RUN EVERY TIME HE WENT TO THE PLATE SO STOP EXPECTING “EXILE ON MAIN ST. PART 2.” THE STONES LAST 5 OR 6 RELEASES ARE STILL BETTER THAN WHAT IS CURRENTLY HOT. AND AS FAR AS OPENING ACTS HOW ABOUT ANOTHER BAND FROM THE ORIGINAL BRITISH INVASION…THE PRETTY THINGS! NO NOT THE DIRTY PRETTY THINGS BUT THE ORGINAL PRETTY THINGS…AND IF YOU NEVER HEARD OF THEM…SHAME ON YOU IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A REAL MUSIC FAN.
OR THE YARDBIRDS OR THE STOOGES OR DKT/MC5…REAL STONES FANS WOULD REALLY DIG ANY OF THESE GREAT BANDS.

Danny | 9/6/2006, 8:13 pm EST

Just like I paid FIFTEEN DOLLARS in 1975 to see THE GREATEST ROCK-N-ROLL BAND OF ALL TIME, and THAT was EXPENSIVE back then, I’d be ONE HAPPY CAMPER to be able to pay a HUNDRED DOLLARS today to see them again! (and I thought it would be the last chance to get to see them in 1975) LONG LIVE KEEF and MICK and that GIANT PINK DING-DONG that blew up out of the stage!

Danny | 9/6/2006, 8:15 pm EST

Except for Charlie’s grey hair, they don’t even LOOK much different than they did in 1975.

STLDreamer | 9/11/2006, 9:46 am EST

CHUCK BERRY would be the absolute best opener for the Stones. Years ago, they were on the same ticket with him opening in europe.

Time to return the favor. What an 80th birthday present for the Real Rock N Roll King.

Kubrick | 9/12/2006, 2:02 pm EST

when i saw the stones last year the opening act was pearl jam and i was so let down by their performance. the band also paled in comparison to the stones show in general. the only thing that was worse than seeing pearl jam before the stones was that eddie vedder came out and sang on ‘wild horses’. this was just unbelievable, one of the best songs in the stones canon and they allow a duet with eddie vedder? come one now! if any new young band is to open they should at least be able to rival the playing or showmanship/energy of the stones. who is that though? the only young, exciting bands that i can think of are the raconteurs or coldplay. the raconteurs are great players with terrific music and coldplay have an energetic show as well as good music. then again there’s always the killers too with some awesome music and a flair for show. why couldn’t they get a big star to open for them? they dwarf all other acts that they could even have the other big draw, U2, open for them and they would be the bigger attraction. i would love to see bowie open for them though, that would be a great show.

Rick Anderson | 9/13/2006, 12:45 pm EST

I think Wolfmother would be a good one. Or how about Walter Trout and the Radicals..
Ya i like the two..

rickoblaze@aol.com | 9/15/2006, 2:28 am EST

the Stones and the Ballbusters
would be a great show !
the Ballbusters have been playing
