Steely Dan Issue a Devastating Critique of Luke and Owen Wilson

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan are furious (in a deeply sarcastic and amusing way) at Owen Wilson. In to this very long and humorous letter on the band’s website addressed to Wilson’s young brother Luke, Fagen and Becker accused Owen of lifting the main character of his new movie “You and Me and Dupree” directly from the band’s 2000 song “Cousin Dupree.” What’s more, Becker and Fagen point out, “THEY DIDN’T EVEN BOTHER TO THINK UP A NEW FUCKING NAME FOR THE GUY!” (caps theirs). To add insult to injury, Becker and Fagen say that the older Wilson hasn’t done much since “Bottle Rocket” and call him “the Zal Yanovsky of the 21st Century,” a reference to the Lovin’ Spoonful guitarist which we don’t quite understand. Score one for the Dan, actor boy!

Is Steely Dan really so played out that they’re trying to sell tickets by getting Owen Wilson to show up at a gig? Its like when Nas used Jay-Z to get back in the game. Booo-urns Steely Dan, booo-urns.

R-n-R | 7/21/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Didn’t it take Steely Dan a long time to put out a certain album? And maybe it isn’t Owen Wilson writing the script for the movie…most actors don’t. Just a couple thoughts.

Donald | 7/21/2006, 5:00 pm EST

“Cousin Dupree” is about a boy lusting after his cousin. I’m guessing You, Me, and Dupree doesn’t have that storyline.

It might be entertaining if it did though.

tipthejar | 7/26/2006, 3:12 pm EST

Steely Dan are still around? It goes to show how off the radar they are of current culture that the only way they can get press is to pick a beef with an actual celebrity. No one under the age of 30 knows who they are. The boys are feeling their age and feeling left out. Sorry boys you had your moment and now it’s gone.

They, Steely Dan, haven’t SUED anybody. When they do, then it’s a different ballgame. In the meantime, they’re right. They had an idea swiped and turned into a crappy movie and they’re irked. I’d be irked too. The letter is funny. Good for them.

notacritic | 7/27/2006, 1:07 am EST

uh, could be its just sarchasm and humor,,,and an attempt at cheap publicity, they could have just come out of the closet!

Owen Wilson | 7/28/2006, 5:03 pm EST

Jeeze – Folks, this is really much ado about nothing. It took me awhile, but I actually found someone who has actually listened to that song, and there is no similarity between the point of that song and the plot of the script.

But go easy on Fag and Beckman. They’re trying hard to be hip and relevant… it’s really embarassing. I’m sure if they would only go back to making the kind of music I’m told they did back in the last century, they might be able to attract their old crowd.

Folks, I’ve always been told that if you have to badmouth someone to make yourself look better, you’ve already lost the game. That said, I’d appreciate it if Fag and Beckman would set their sites elsewhere and let me go back to concentrating on my new film, “Hey 19…”

Side note to Rikki Lee Jones: Be careful… I think they’re on to you for taking that name to cash in on Rikki Don’t Lose That Number!”

Did anyone read the lyrics. This is nothing like the movie plot. Do they now have a copyright on the name Dupree? Sad attempt at publicity.

Walter | 7/31/2006, 10:50 am EST

Nobody gets humor anymore. This current generation sux.

tcat101 | 8/13/2006, 10:55 pm EST

Owen,
Stop being a petulant child and own up to what you did. Your remarks in response to Donald and Walter’s thoughts are completely uncalled for. If you want to keep playing in these humiliating, insulting parts of movies that I can’t even watch all the way through, I guess that’s your problem. If you want to make money playing an ignorant idiot, that’s your issue.
You cannot even begin to understand the intellegence and significance of their music. But what were we to expect of you? You are nothing but a silly boy just playing a character actor. Donald and Walter are artists, which you would know nothing about.
You owe them an apology.

The least Steely Dan song is ten-fold better than any of the junk on today’s airwaves. Their concerts are filled with people from 70 to 20. What band has or ever will be able to reach that base?

It was a joke you morons !

It was a joke. Owen Wilson even got it, he wrote an equally funny response. You clowns, on the other hand … shouldn’t you be watching the Home Shopping Network or something really productive?

And by the way. Owen’s answer was hilarious too. Entertainment!

The character was a ripp-off AND the letter was intended as a joke with truth to it.
Steely Dan won a grammy in 2001, and their monthly royalties are vast so how washed up could they be.
YES its true they are not the SUPERSTARS they were, but they enjoy playing and writing great music and living the life.
Most of us will never enjoy the life of being TRUE ARTISTS.
They go down in history as being some of the greatest songwriters of all time.
tipthejar: what have you done with YOUR life that you feel you can ridicule great artists whose music and lyrics you couldnt understand in you wettest of wet-dream?!
TK: Do you REALLY think the DAN feel sad? Are you really such a moron.
TK and tipthejar please stick to what you know best: making soy-lattes and frappacino’s at STARBUCKS. (no whipped cream on mine please and snap it up because Im late for a show…)

Well, the lyrics and the basic one-line of the movie do mean the same thing. Aimless slacker type parks himself on someone’s couch, eyes the girl, etc. But it’s unworthy of Steely Dan to stoop to this level. They are pure genius talent and I’ve got every single one of their albums. They’ve also openly criticised Wes Anderson for the themes in his films. Inexplicable animosity towards this group. I mean, even though they have so many great albums, a few of their songs have been complete dogs – corrosively diappointing. So surely they can find it in themselves to feel some empathy towards another fellow-artist who’s career is still work in progress. I wonder what they made of The Darjeeling Ltd. If they slammed that film, they need help.
