Check out this excellent exclusive clip of Billie Joe Armstrong performing “Alison” with Elvis Costello on VH1’s Decades Rock Live. Note: Billie Joe is the nervous one in leather and eyeliner whisper/singing like he’s at a high school talent show and Costello is the badass in shades belting it out like he’s in the shower.

julia | 12/26/2007, 12:48 pm EST
I thought Billie Joe was all right. He practically sounds soulful compared to his regular songs. Love “Allison” though!
Charelle | 12/19/2007, 2:49 pm EST
I disagree with the bad critics about Billie Joe. I really like him here!
Mrs. Billie Joe | 12/2/2007, 12:26 am EST
I luv billie joe, and i think him and elvis togeather were awesome! For all you people who said anything bad about Billie joe, shut the F up, and try singing an unrehersed song infrunt of thousands of people!!!

I saw this show several times and Billie Joe did an awesome job singing and playing guitar. He is something to be.
James Yerlett | 1/25/2007, 10:49 am EST
Sorry i meant to write Girls Aloud, the thought of whats underneath Billie’s trousers makes me nervous and can’t spell!!! xxx
James Yerlett | 1/25/2007, 10:46 am EST
I’m more of a girls sloud fan myself, but this song truly rocks!!! i love billie’s tight trousers!!! xxx
Hannah Plant | 1/15/2007, 5:48 am EST

Alison is not an easy song from a vocal point of view. Being as it was, an impromptu performance, let’s say that Billie Joe pulled it off. Try performing live sitting side by side with someone you admire…then you’ll know what BJ felt like.
Oana | 8/25/2006, 9:56 am EST
Wake up!It’s really not that early, isn’t it?Come on, I know I sound phatetic but I wanna talk about Green Day.Pretty please!
Oana | 8/25/2006, 9:10 am EST
I’m getting a bit mad! Here in Romania aren’t a lot of Green Day fans, most like some kind of shit music called manele. And when they hear you like Green Day they think you’re a freak.
Oana | 8/25/2006, 9:03 am EST
Hey anybody here?
Oana | 8/25/2006, 8:58 am EST
You guys are so lucky.Where I live there’s no VH1!
latka | 8/18/2006, 9:34 am EST
Nobodys perfect except Billie
latka | 8/18/2006, 9:30 am EST
Russia loves Green Day
Alison | 8/14/2006, 11:26 am EST
I love this just because my name is Alison! Billy Joe does seem shy, but it’s sorta cute! Teehee
Nicole | 7/23/2006, 11:54 pm EST
That was great. Elvis Costello is an amazing artist and I think Billie Joe actually did a pretty good job with the song.
someone else | 7/23/2006, 8:45 pm EST
especially since that song was un-rehearsed
someone | 7/23/2006, 8:44 pm EST
wouldn’t you agree that part of what makes an engaging artist is the ability to perform? regardless, i felt that both Elvis and Billie joe played an awesome show.
veronica | 7/22/2006, 10:44 pm EST
W, have a listen to a live version of Alison on the expanded Armed Forces release and you’ll see what I mean about his vocal performance. Billie Joe, meanwhile, is a performer more than a singer. I think he knows his limitations.
W | 7/22/2006, 9:59 pm EST
How do you know it wasn’t the other way around?
veronica | 7/22/2006, 7:18 pm EST
Billie Joe was way outclassed there. This really wasn’t his arena at all. Elvis actually went easy on him, restraining his own performance so not to upstage Billie Joe’s vocals too much. I’ve seen EC perform Alison solo in the last year, and he wrecks that song like he wrote it last week. Billie Joe just isn’t the talent or musician that EC is … sorry Green Day fans! (And to think Dookie was the first album I ever bought…)
istilliketherollingstones | 7/22/2006, 11:18 am EST
eh, it was pretty good
Jimmy | 7/21/2006, 1:12 pm EST
wow, what a great performance. i can honestly say i’ve never been dissapointed by anything Green Day or Billie Joe have ever performed. and elvis was good too… that’s why your statements to the contrary were so silly. when Billie Joe sings an acoustic song, his perfromance is going to be entirely different than when he belts out American Idiot!
pfffft | 7/19/2006, 11:00 pm EST
Jeez. Just take it for what it is, people. A great duet.
alison | 7/19/2006, 10:07 pm EST
“Billie Joe is the nervous one in leather and eyeliner whisper/singing like he’s at a high school talent show”
I completely disagree. Billie’s vocals are a little bit softened because singing like he does on a song like “American Idiot” wouldn’t fit here. He’s still singing his heart out though. Anyone who’s ever followed Green Day would see that.
Alex | 7/19/2006, 6:43 pm EST
I can’t seem to get this to work.
greenday101 | 7/18/2006, 9:50 pm EST
If you tune into the TV Special, Billie Joe and EC perform 4 Cool Green Day Songs and 2 other cool Elvis classics..The was an impromptu performance that Billie Joe just broke into, unrehearsed and Elvis didnt expect it…Watch the full concert special on Friday night and see how great they are together..
fionafan2 | 7/18/2006, 9:45 pm EST
great song, where are the Fiona and Elvis songs ? I heard they were incredable together. I can’t wait to see the show
Brandon | 7/18/2006, 3:55 pm EST
Billie Joe doesn’t have the range for this song. It is such a beautiful song and he really has to reach. It’s too bad, he would of been much more acclimated to watching the detectives. It’s fast and cheeky. I saw Dustin Kensrue from Thrice do a great version of Radio, I would of liked to see him do a duet with Elvis. Maybe Peace.
ishmael | 7/18/2006, 3:40 pm EST
What are you kidding me? Whose idea was this? Putting perennial smartass Billie Joe Armstrong on one of the most understated and aching of Costello’s ballads? WTF?!? I mean, Green Day is good in their own right, and I could see Billie Joe doing something like “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes,” but this was a classic bone-headed record company mismatch. You might as well have put Billy Idol up there.
CostelloFan | 7/18/2006, 1:24 pm EST
Elvis & Billie Joe are great together. It looks like Billy was a bit shy with Elvis, funny…I would be too..haha
GreenDay160 | 7/18/2006, 1:21 pm EST
This is very cool..You said the full concert airs Friday ? 21st ?
on VH1 Classic ? Cool, I get that on my cable system..
migi | 7/18/2006, 1:18 pm EST
great clip ! I can’t wait to see the full concert on VH1 Classic this Friday Night. I heard this Decades series is amazing..
