Rolling Stone flooded the zone at the Siren Festival this past Saturday in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The annual fried fish and rollercoaster fest also featured some music, including bang-up sets by Art Brut, the Scissor Sisters and many others. Art Brut might have just stolen the show: highlights included singer Eddie Argos pointing at the sun before bellowing through, “I’m Considering a Move to L.A.”; later he jumped off the stage and ran shoeless through the crowd. Closers the Scissor Sisters had to contend with some technical difficulties: a power outage cut their set short, but not before they turned Coney Island into Seventies disco.
Those adorably eager enough to get there early caught performances from weirdo, face-painted sextet Man Man, a new age drum-circle, Rammstein-esque band/performance group, and The Roger Sisters, who still tirelessly honing their White Stripes/Yeah Yeah Yeahs impression. Dirty On Purpose sounded pretty freakin’‚ sweet until the guitarist blew out his amp at which point a minor exodus of sweaty kids made their way to the main stage for the early highlight of the day: Tapes ‘n Tapes. Umbrellas were raised in an effort to preserve greasy hipster coifs as the rain began to spit and Tapes took the stage for the best set of the afternoon. Heads nodded, fans jumped around to winners like, “Insistor” and “Cowbell” and umbrellas were lowered after numerous jeers (”Real fans get wet! Pink umbrellas are for pussies!”) But other colored ones are okay? Tapes fans, you’re so hardcore.
