It’s at best an even bet that Rivers Cuomo – Weezer frontman and a legendarily discombobulated, mercurial guy – will be able to find his left shoe this morning, so it’s no particular surprise that Weezer’s future is in doubt. Cuomo has announced that Weezer are “done for now,” and may never record again. But Cuomo’s stayed busy: Currently living in Japan, he’s working on a batch of songs “for no one in particular,” including one about his favorite records, and – how’s this for random? – one about the U.S. World Cup soccer t
- Junkie chic is as over as trucker hats, but in the new video for pop-rocker Butch Walker’s “Betaamphetamine (Pretty Pretty),” Avril Lavigne appears sullen, strung-out and…hotter than ever.
- Danger Mouse – fresh off serious chart success with Gnarls Barkley – has co-produced the third album from New York disco-punks the Rapture. Pieces of the People We Love is due September 4th.
- Pint-sized British rapper Lady Sovereign has only recently gone from blogger fave to Def Jam signee, so it’s probably a little early in her career for her to be calling out haters. Nonetheless, her new single, “Love Me Or Hate Me” features a chorus of “If you love me, then thank you. If you hate me, then fuck you.” She’s still kind of adorable, howev. The single hits radio – in slightly edited form, we presume – August 11; her debut album, Public Warning, drops in October.
- Sean Lennon, whose dad was apparently a songwriter of some merit, is releasing his first album in eight years. Due September 26, Friendly Fire features a cover of Marc Bolan’s “Would I Be the One,” features Kanye West collaborator Jon Brion and Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda, and Lennon and director Michelle Civetta have created short films for each song, with cameos from Linday Lohan, Bijou Phillips and Carrie Fisher.
- Because who wouldn’t want to be in video for a phantasmagoic soundscape about God-knows-what?: TV on the Radio have put out an open call for extras for the “Wolf Like Me” video, shooting Friday in Brooklyn.
- Reclusive indie hero Jeff Mangum surfaced recently. Aziz Ansari – comedian-to-watch and a genuinely funny motherfucker – appeared on Product Shop NYC’s latest Sirius Blog Radio broadcast and got an exclusive interview with Mangum, who talked about some possible future projects and that silly-ass message-board scandal.
