Best Second Albums of All Time: #11 Through #20

7/12/06, 12:14 pm EST

pearl jamYou, the readers, have spoken on the best second discs of all time, with 400-plus comments and counting. Here are the top ten picks not on our list. The main disqualifier has been that while most of your suggestions are excellent (e.g., The Band’s The Band) they’re not considerable improvements on the artist’s debut. But we’re gonna give you Pearl Jam’s Vs., ’cause it’s such a monster. Without further ado:

Joy Division, Closer

Van Morrison, Astral Weeks

Black Sabbath, Paranoid

Oasis, What’s The Story, Morning Glory

Pearl Jam, Vs.

Metallica, Ride The Lightning

Elton John, Elton John

Tool, Aenima

James Taylor, Sweet Baby James

Smashing Pumpkins, Siamese Dream

And yes, we now realize that Blondie’s Parallel Lines is their third disc.

Christian | 7/12/2006, 12:24 pm EST

The White Stripes, “De Stjil”
Fastball, “All the Pain that Money Can Buy”
Metric, “Live it Out”
Coheed and Cambria, “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3″
The Decemberists, “Her Majesty The Decemberists”
Weezer, “Pinkerton”
Sufjan Stevens, “Greetings From Michigan”
Immortal Technique, “Revolutionary Vol. 2″
KANYE WEST, “LATE REGISTRATION”!
Franz Ferdinand, “You Could Have It So Much Better”
Ben Kweller, “On My Way”
BRIGHT EYES, “LIFTED”!
Beastie Boys, “Paul’s Boutique”
By the way, I got “What’s the Story Morning Glory” yesterday, and it really didn’t mean that much to me. I’ve heard way better albums from much better bands.

Chris | 7/12/2006, 12:53 pm EST

Ummm, “Lifted” by Bright Eyes is not their 2nd album, it’s their third. Just thought I’d let you know cause I was gonna put that and realized it wasn’t their second.

Phil Ville | 7/12/2006, 1:49 pm EST

Madonna – Like A Virgin

Ryan | 7/12/2006, 2:05 pm EST

Totally agree w/ Paul’s Boutique…

A few I thought of:
Radiohead – the Bends (thought this would be an obvious pick…)
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
Primal Scream – Screamadelica
Public Image LTD. – 2nd Edition (aka Metal Box)
Spoon – A Series of Sneaks
The Breeders – Last Splash
Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane over the Sea
The Dandy Warhols – …Come Down
Al Green – …Gets Next to You
Fleetwood Mac – Rumours (the 2nd album of the band’s 2nd incarnation…)

BTW, James Taylor has, does, and will suck on any album…his second or seventieth.

Hasselhoof | 7/12/2006, 2:17 pm EST

Uh… are all of you really forgetting Nirvana ‘Nevermind?’ Yes, it was their second album, not the first. That would be ‘Bleach,’ you ignorant morons.

Kerr | 7/12/2006, 2:28 pm EST

The Tragically Hip – ‘Up to Here’, Our Lady Peace – ‘Naveed’, Sam Roberts – ‘Chemical City’ (Don’t count ‘Inhuman Condition’ and ‘We Were Born In A Flame’ as two albums. The first was a short disc rushed to market to back Brother Down and Don’t Walk Away Eileen. The second includes the same tracks and more, making it their full-length debut), Alexisonfire – ‘Watch Out!’, Pilate – ‘Sell Control for Life’s Speed’ (not really a lot better than their firse, but check it out), Best debut album, Barenaked Ladies – ‘Gordon’ Nobody makes better rock than Canadians!

RS Fan | 7/12/2006, 2:29 pm EST

I agree with 9 of the 10 on the list. I usualy hate lists like this, but if you are are a music fan, you will do well to make sure you have these albums. Sorry Christian, the Oasis album is indeed great.

Yoni | 7/12/2006, 2:33 pm EST

Thanks for putting Pearl Jam and Tool on the list, but what about Kanye’s Late Registration? I loved the College Dropout, but Registration was an improvement musically and lyrically. Also, I would also put A Perfect Circle’s Thirteenth Step.

RiverRatSalad | 7/12/2006, 3:23 pm EST

White Light/White Heat
Fun House
Meat Puppets II

RiverRatSalad | 7/12/2006, 3:24 pm EST

Metallica’s second album blows compared to Metal up your Arse!!!!!

RiverRatSalad | 7/12/2006, 3:25 pm EST

Oasis should be removed from any List that has anything to do w/ music period.

Craig | 7/12/2006, 3:32 pm EST

dude kanye west is terrible

Tim | 7/12/2006, 3:36 pm EST

What about Radiohead’s “The Bends”? That album really rocks, and it’s one that you can just push play and let it go.

Adi Singh | 7/12/2006, 3:52 pm EST

The bends by Radiohead, Whats the Story Morning Glory by Oasis and I`m not sure if Smell like teen spirit was Nirvana`s second or not but if it was that`ll be right up there. Rush of blood to the head by Coldplay.

Greg | 7/12/2006, 3:59 pm EST

The Doors – Strange Days

Simply the best album on acid, the 60’s, and Jim’s best lyrics. For sure a classic, and the best second album by an artist ever.

Ace | 7/12/2006, 4:50 pm EST

Hate to be cliche but since I’m only 26 and wasn’t around fpr it I think it’s ok: With the Beatles.

Just listened to it… ok I could do without till there was you but the rest kicks a$$

Mark C | 7/12/2006, 5:24 pm EST

Elvis Costello, “This Year’s Model”
Elliot Smith, “Elliot Smith”
Led Zeppelin, “Led Zeppelin II”
Nirvana, “Nevermind”
The White Stripes “De Stijl”
The Breeders “Last Splash”

nigel | 7/12/2006, 5:26 pm EST

“Everybody knows this is nowhere” is Neil Youngs second album and is a definate step up from his first – though you could argue its the first Neil Young and Crazy Horse album…
Bob Dylans “Freewheelin’” is worth a mention too…

Randon | 7/12/2006, 5:27 pm EST

Hey people i think your forgetting the best album ever, Foo Fighters, Colour and the Shape, that was a great album man. And dont forget Purple by STP.

Matthew | 7/12/2006, 5:40 pm EST

Hey RS, Aenima is Tool’s 3rd album, following Opiate and Undertow….hello, aren’t you the experts?

jared | 7/12/2006, 6:00 pm EST

i got worried when i didnt see pearl jam on the first list, also a perfect circle’s sophmoric album deserves a little credit, and ive been readin all these comments and i havent seen one talk about Toxicity!

Nine Inch Nails – The downward Spiral

Jane’s Addiction “Nothing Shocking”

Lou D | 7/12/2006, 6:58 pm EST

Wasn’t Elton John’s second album in the U.S. Tumbleweed Connection. Empty Sky was not released until 1975 in the U.S. Tumbleweed Connection is perhaps his finest.

Weinerhead | 7/12/2006, 7:48 pm EST

Tim was right on-The Bends-Radiohead

Room on Fire-The Strokes
Coldplay-Rush of Blood to the Head
I agree with a lot of the other peoples comments and suggestions on best second album but dont feel like writing them all out when they have already been said.

Kanye West: “Late registration”
Alanis Morissette: “Supposed former infatuation junkie” (ok, let’s forget those two incredibly horrible two pop albums made in Canada).
Tori Amos: “Under the pink” (again, let’s forget about Y Kant Tori Read).
Garbage: “Version 2.0″ (I’m surprised nobody talked about this album).
Björk: “Post” (again, nobody talked about this one).
Regina Spektor: “Songs” (even though it was not released on the usa).
Pj Harvey: “Rid of me” (c’mon!!! and you think that “What’s the story (morning glory)” is a good album???).
Paula Cole: “This fire”.

mikew | 7/12/2006, 11:15 pm EST

mike b | 7/13/2006, 1:29 am EST

radiohead “the bends”
weezer “pinkerton”
nirvana “nevermind”

i hope all of these are actually second albums (i might be wrong), and i’m sure i forgot a bunch of good stuff.

2000lightyearsaway | 7/13/2006, 1:51 am EST

Where’s Kerplunk (Green Day)?

Dan | 7/13/2006, 4:33 am EST

Right on about Candy O and Meat Puppets II.

2nd Franz Ferdinand crushes the first.

Bayou Country by Creedence? Born on the Bayou, dude! Proud Mary! Bootleg!

Matt | 7/13/2006, 9:38 am EST

“Rumours”- Fleetwood Mac.
If you count the Buckingham/Nicks lineup as the only lineup of the Mac and skip the Peter Green-blues era Mac, than this would qualify as a sophmore release. If so it is easily the best sophmore album of all time, no doubt about it, perhaps the best album of all time. Lindsey Buckingham has to be the most underated guitar player of all-time, and who doesn’t like such awsome songs as “The Chain”, “Go Your Own Way”, and “Goldust Woman”.

Carl | 7/13/2006, 10:47 am EST

Fleetwood Mac’s actual second album, Mr. Wonderful, is really good, although it’s arguable whether it’s better than their debut album. According to my research, “Relish” by Joan Osborne was actually her second album, and deserves mention. Also, Paul Simon’s first solo album after S&G broke up, is actually his second solo album. He recorded a solo album in England around ‘64 or ‘65. Finally, Lou, I agree that Tumbleweed Connection is a great album and probably Elton’s best. It was his second U.S. album.

John | 7/13/2006, 2:02 pm EST

Actually, Aenima is Tool’s 3rd album. Although it is amazing

John | 7/13/2006, 2:05 pm EST

Also, what about Nirvana’s Nevermind? Or Led Zeppelin II? 311’s Grassroots? Or Queens of the Stone Age- depending on how you classify it. Their second album is either Rated R or Songs for the Deaf. Great call on Vs. and Ride the Lightening

gusteaux | 7/13/2006, 2:41 pm EST

It won’t be released until next Tuesday, but you can go ahead and add Los Lonely Boys’ “Sacred” to the top of the list.

Ian H | 7/13/2006, 3:16 pm EST

“Nevermind” was not Nirvana’s follow-up. “Bleach” was the follow-up to “Ansecticide,” (1986 or 1988).

gary | 7/13/2006, 5:02 pm EST

what about hendrix’s AXIS BOLD AS LOVE?

Big | 7/14/2006, 10:43 am EST

BLONDIE – Eat To The Beat
RAMONES – Half Way to Sanity
The Breeders – Last Splash
RHCP – Californication

Your Gonna Get It – Tom Petty

Astral Weeks – Van Morrison(which is on many lists as one of the best of all time)
Piano Man – Billy Joel
The Freewheelin’ . . . – Bob Dylan
Space Oddity – David Bowie
Straight Shooter – Bad Company
Get Your Wings – Aerosmith
Couldn’t Stand the Weather – SRV Peter Gabriel II – Peter Gabriel

Just a few that come to mind.

Sixer | 7/14/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Coldplay…Rush of Blood to the Head. Took them to the top of the music world.

Brennan | 7/14/2006, 3:49 pm EST

Surprised that Rolling Stone didn’t mention Nevermind or the Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan… but if I could add some to the list, it would be

1. Ramones – Leave Home
2. Radiohead – The Bends
3. Led Zeppelin – II
4. Dr. Dre – 2001
5. Eminem – Marshall Mathers LP
6. Coldplay – Rush of Blood to the Head

kevin | 7/14/2006, 4:35 pm EST

Dude, Big, Californication is not even close to the Chili Pepper’s second album.

Big Tom (Music Genius) | 7/14/2006, 10:53 pm EST

Finally, somebody mentions ‘Paul’s Boutique’ Best 2nd ever.

scott | 7/18/2006, 7:38 am EST

being british id hav 2 say adi singh has made a great litl list.altho many of you are missing the point.the album has tobe a SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT on the artist’s first album.what the story is good but definitely maybe was voted best album EVER by Q readers.
coldplays ‘rush of blood’ sent them to world leaders status.
ian.h-1.ITS CALLED INSECTICIDE and 2.THAT WAS THEIR 3RD ALBUM.TWAT!
cupl more suggestions:-
LOSTPROPHETS-st art something
GORILLAZ-demon days
ATHLETE-tourist
LIMP BIZKIT-significant other
one last thing-eminems first album was INFINITE (look it up) and the slim shady EP was his second.then slim shady lp, then marshall mathers lp!easy mistake tho lol

Christian (again) | 7/18/2006, 4:00 pm EST

Although “Infinite” was Eminem’s first full-length, it was not a major-label release and sold horribly. The Mars Volta’s “Frances the Mute” was an improvement over “De-Loused in the Comatorium”, though both are fantastic. Fair point about “Lifted”, Chris. RS Fan, everyone’s entitled to their opinions, but Oasis is a very boring band, their lyrics are dreadfully cheesy, and without “Champagne Supernova” and “Wonderwall” the album would be worthless. I don’t believe “Loveless” was My Bloody Valentine’s second album, though I wouldn’t be too upset if I was wrong.

steven logan | 7/19/2006, 6:46 am EST

yeah, downward spiral, color and the shape, kerplunk (yeah, it does count), pinkerton, paul’s boutique, loveless etc. bleach, stuff like that.

DoubleF | 7/19/2006, 3:18 pm EST

Bad Religion Suffer ;

PJ Sparks | 7/19/2006, 7:11 pm EST

Can’t argue at all with most of those picks, especially Pearl Jam’s ‘Vs’. And someone has mentioned Radiohead’s ‘The Bends’. I am surpirsed nobody has said A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘The Low End Theory’. Unless I missed it…it was a long list of comments.

PJ Sparks | 7/19/2006, 7:13 pm EST

Can’t argue with most of the picks, especially Pearl Jam’s ‘Vs’. And someone did mention Radiohead’s great ‘The Bends’. However, did anybody mention A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘The Low End Theory’? I may have missed that one…after all, that’s a lot of posts to read at work.

Tom Wieler | 7/28/2006, 6:28 pm EST

i know this isn’t a fav of most hip-hop fans, and many would claim that “Straight Outta Compton” is the better album of the two, but I say bollocks. “Efil4zaggin” is an amazing piece of work that is so beyond the condensing label of “gangsta rap.” In terms of the nihilism exhibited on this record, i would call it the hip-hop eqivalent of “the Downward spiral.” in my opinion, “Efil4zaggin” compares to “Straight Outta Compton” like “OK Computer” compares to “Pablo Honey.”

King Biscuit Flower Hour | 7/31/2006, 9:47 am EST
