Thanks to tech site Engadget, we have a sneak peek at Microsoft’s “Argo.” The digital music player, which Microsoft has been hard at work developing, is expected ito provide serious competition for Apple’s iPod. The Argo looks very similar to the iPod, but with a larger screen, and will likely be Wi-Fi enabled, allowing users to download music directly to the player. According to reports in the Seattle Times, it will come as part of a line of “Xbox-branded digital-media products,” including an online media service that the Engadget wonks speculate will “dupe all your iTunes tracks for free.”
UPDATE: According to recently-filed patents, Apple is working on some innovations to counter the Microsoft threat: a talking iPod. The new technology announces songs, artists, and albums so listeners don’t have to look at the screen, making it easier to use while driving or riding a bike. The patent also includes the use of “voice talent,” meaning you might someday get to hear James Earl Jones say “Hoobastank.”
