Monday News: Killers, Paul McCartney, Ben Kweller, Sufjan Stevens, Elton John, Broken Social Scene

7/10/06, 10:33 am EST

  • Killers frontman Brandon Flowers hates emo and, apparently, shaving. But he’s totally down with this whole internet thing: At 5 p.m. EST today, islandrecords.com will unveil a snippet of the Killers’ “When You Were Young,” the first single from their purportedly Springsteen-influenced album, Sam’s Town, which Flowers says will go down as “one of the best albums of the past twenty years.”
  • Paul McCartney’s first guitar is up for auction. Dear Jann: If you’re reading, this would look great in the conference room.
  • Sufjan Stevens will bring the Illinoize — and other folk-pop majestry — to a theater near you this fall.
  • Elton John hasn’t looked truly fabulous since 1978’s Blue Moves tour (or thereabouts). But that won’t stop him from performing with Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Kanye West, Bon Jovi, Black Eyed Peas, Scissor Sisters and more at the September 7 Fashion Rocks Concert at Radio City Music Hall, with proceeds going to Elton’s AIDS foundation.
  • Beloved Toronto collective Broken Social Scene will “take an extended break from the road and the studio” following a November U.S. tour.
  • Rock & Roll Daily Exclusive: Remember Radish? Dallas-based teenage grungesters? America’s Silverchair? Maybe not. While their frontman, Ben Kweller, has yet to equal even their brief fame, he’s made one excellent record and one pretty good one. His third is due in September; and it’s great. It’s also self-titled, produced by Gil Norton (Pixies) and “brimming with unforgettable melodies and deft craft,” according to this exclusive press release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEATO Records is proud to announce the release of Ben Kweller’s third album on September 19, 2006. The album, simply titled “Ben Kweller,” was produced by Gil Norton (Pixies) and is the follow up to 2004’s highly acclaimed “On My Way” and 2002’s indie-rock classic “Sha Sha.” Like these albums, the new one is brimming with unforgettable melodies and deft craft, while it also expresses a deep, open soulfulness that could only come from one so sensitive as Kweller. Unlike the previous albums, however, every note you’ll here on “Ben Kweller” was played by the man himself. With “Ben Kweller,” the 25-year-old native Texan wants to revive the nearly extinct tradition of the lone male rock singer. Harkening back to the days when Springsteen and Petty and Mellencamp were writing iconic American music, Kweller strives to stand tall among the greats, writing Rock ‘n’ Roll music with infectious melodies over a bed of universal themes that longs to endure. From the album’s beginning, “Run,” filled with snare drum, glockenspiel, electric guitar and piano hammering the same descending melody with jubilant tambourines to its hard rock closer, “This is War,” one gets a sense that Kweller is after something classic. Few of his generation have the deep sense of craft and heritage to pull it off with as much success.Kweller and his band will appear on the main stages of both this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in August in Chicago and Austin City Limits Festival in September in Austin, TX.More nationwide tour dates to be announced soon.

Ok ok so… the Killers frontman says that the album they are about to release is one of the best albums of the last 20(!) years. No one else raises an eyebrow at this? I mean that’s a bold statement. I wouldn’t say something like that just because it’d make me look full of myself. I say, don’t count your chickens.

we’ll see. they warm my heart.

Marius | 7/10/2006, 12:31 pm EST

Dude, what the hell is the guy from the Killers thinking? I mean, they sound nice and all poppy meets rock, but…I don’t know, that’s a bold statement he makes…

The Killers’ record is called “Sam’s Town”. Just confirmed by Billboard-

Brandon Flowers- what a pretentious f**ckin’ bastard! He seems like a total a-hole.

Making a statement like that not only puts extra pressure on the record to be outstanding, but its arrogance also puts off a lot of people (see also: Kanye West). Personally, hearing him say something soo unbelievably pretentious makes me WANT the album to flop.

Can we get Zidane to headbutt this a-hole, er something?

If an album is going to be the best in the last 20 years, you shouldn’t have to SAY that it’s going to be the best in the last 20 years.

Hawn Kukku | 7/10/2006, 4:56 pm EST

From the snippet I’ve heard it does not seem that its going to be one of the best records for this year either!

Rudy Pilfer | 7/10/2006, 6:14 pm EST

The Killers suck donkey balls.

Sherry | 7/10/2006, 6:17 pm EST

Man, what an arrogant person. This makes me want to see it flop, as well.

Bill | 7/10/2006, 6:17 pm EST

Ha Ha Ha Ha

He is cocky for a guy who’s fan sconsits of fickle teens who would eventually grow up and get better taste in music.

Graham | 7/11/2006, 12:22 am EST

Whaddya know? Brandon Flowers is the only person over 13 who likes the Killers.

Cornelius Buttersworth | 7/11/2006, 5:12 am EST

Brandon Flowers is just ahead of Johnny Borrell in the massively-pretentious-egotisti cal-wanker-without-good-reason stakes. The biggest in the past twenty years even.

Regal | 7/11/2006, 5:21 am EST

He’s just taking a cue from Noel Gallagher. He’s not stuck up and he’s far from pretentious, but he knows the value of confidence and self promotion. Tool is a pretentious band. Jack White is a pretentious person. Brandon Flowers is just a guy in a rock and roll band that hit it big who likes his record. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

As for the comments about having a teenybopper fanbase- listen to Hot Fuss. They have great songs and they deliver them well. The Killers are a solid band, and this record will probably be pretty damn good. One of the best of the last 20 years? Not likely, but that’s determined as much by sales as by quality anyway.

Derek | 7/11/2006, 5:23 am EST

So you guys believe some snip-it from RS is a way to completely judge someone’s character? Judgmental much?

What happened to context? Seems like they’re just trying to rile everyone up.

Classy reporting, gang.

RLG | 7/11/2006, 10:14 am EST

U cant judge a album by it dumb ass lead singer who nows it might be great er then the last. he should have said like maybe 5 years 20 is a lot.

Abby | 7/11/2006, 3:38 pm EST

I guess its just too damn bad for you people because I seriously doubt this album is going to flop because they’re such a great band. And this snippet has just reenforced those doubts.

daphs | 7/11/2006, 3:42 pm EST

Brandon’s exicted about the new album. You work your ass off for a while putting out a record, of course you are going to be proud when it’s done.

musicfan | 8/1/2006, 9:55 pm EST

I agree how that statement is extremely bold and a little outlandish considering their have been some awesome albums made in the past twenty years (The Joshua Tree by U2, anyone?). But, I must say, I have seen the Killers live, and they are definitely going to go very, very far in their career and produce some great albums. They are a very talented, determined group of musicians and they deserve their fame for they have worked so hard for it. I consider Hot Fuss a masterpiece and it is my favorite album. You must listen to it as a whole, not just the few popular songs they have. The entire album is wonderful and all of the songs flow together well, and Mr. Brightside and Somebody Told Me aren’t even the best songs on the album! And from observing at their concert, their fan base DOES consist of people over the age of 13. Most of the people are over 30 and most of the Killers fans are guys, believe it or not! So people should get their facts right. And yeah, Brandon Flowers is just a tad bit overly proud of his next album, that’s all. However, their next album probably won’t be as good as the first because the first was fantastic, so I do consider his statement ridiculous.
