Journey Vocalist Won’t Stop Deceivin’

7/10/06, 4:22 pm EST

In 1998, when Journey hired Steve Augeri to replace vocalist Steve Perry, they gave the former Gap employee a simple instruction: Sing exactly like Perry, which he managed to do with extraordinary precision. About a year ago, fans started to notice that, at every show, Augeri’s vocals were identical down to the smallest detail from. One Journey fanatic documented this apparent lip-syncing in thoroughly dork-tastic detail, complete with audio clips. When a couple radio DJ’s picked up the story, Augeri seemingly sang live, with disastrously croaky, off-key results. Last week, Journey put out a press release claiming Augeri was suffering from an “acute throat infection” and would be replaced by former Yngwie Malmsteen sideman Jeff Scott Soto. For those keeping track, Soto will be Journey’s fourth frontman.

My list includes Long Cold Winter (Cinderella), Open Up & Say…Ahhh (Poison), Bite Down Hard (Britny Fox)

TS | 7/14/2006, 12:59 pm EST

Why are you reporting this as “fact”?

Your link to the supposed “proof” is dead anyway.

If you’re going to run with a rumor, you should have the journalistic professionalism to include the word “allegedly”.

First you say it was “apparent” lip-synching, then you say it was “seemingly live”.

Which is it then?

cindie | 7/14/2006, 1:26 pm EST

I agree with TS. The link is totally dead.

Rocker1 | 7/14/2006, 1:26 pm EST

For those keeping track, JSS hasn’t been officially named the new frontman, he’s just taking over until Augeri returns. If Steve can’t then JSS will become the 4th. Get your facts straight.

Andrea | 7/14/2006, 1:55 pm EST

I am a Steve Perry fan when he was lead vocal for Journey. In the 90’s I even wrote an article called ‘Journey’ which was printed in the Reader, here in San Diego. More recently, I saw the ‘new’ JOurney at Coor’s. Frankly Aujeri stunk big time. I left the concert and was quite bummed out about the awful performance. Guess I wasn’t lucky enough to hear the alleged ‘lip syncing’…I say get a lead singer ‘as good as or better’ than Steve Perry or can the act. Check out Foreigner…they have a great new lead singer. Hate to blast Journey, but come on guys, you can do better than that!!!

Not Proven | 7/14/2006, 2:01 pm EST

I listened to the ‘proof’ the guy had on his site. The vocal tracks DID NOT match as he claimed. Rolling Stone has always hated Journey and has rarely given them any press at all. Naturally, you’ll take a rumour and run with it as fact… lame.

ML | 7/14/2006, 3:02 pm EST

Meanwhile,Perry is practicing scales, for something, and Uncle Joe Benson heard him recently and said he sounded like the 80’s. Stayed tuned for the soap opera named Journey. If they weren’t lippin then when they were forced to go live Augeri should have sounded OK.He then only lasted 3-4 shows and puff ,gone. Can you defend that? His voice was worn because of constant touring.

LMAO | 7/14/2006, 3:17 pm EST

Those poor narrow-minded folks who defend Augeri’s obvious lip syncing, ignore proof and live in a dream world ought to take a vacation. Preferably somewhere real quiet.

KMN | 7/14/2006, 3:33 pm EST

Long live the TRUE legacy of Journey when the vocal were live all the time. It’s called the Steve Perry years!

The Truth | 7/14/2006, 4:49 pm EST

The audio clips did indeed match up. Many people in the industry know of this but are afraid to speak out.

The Truth | 7/14/2006, 4:57 pm EST

“If they weren’t lippin then when they were forced to go live Augeri should have sounded OK.He then only lasted 3-4 shows and puff ,gone. Can you defend that? His voice was worn because of constant touring.”

Simply not so. Augeri has been suffering vocal problems since the start of the 2005 tour. The band hoped he’d improve, he never did. One week into the 30th anniversary tour they decided to go to tape. Utilizing isolated vocal tracks from the Sony Vegas DVD and assorted radio demos Augeri and the band had made (when Augeri first joined). Augeri’s voice has remained in a state of disrepair since early in the 2005 tour.

JourneyFan | 7/14/2006, 5:21 pm EST

Not only has Jeff Scott Soto NOT yet been named the new frontman for Journey (which is not guaranteed to happen whether Steve Augeri returns or not) … but Journey had 2 lead singers before Steve Perry: Robert Fleischman and Gregg Rollie. So, If Soto does become the frontman (or anyone else for that matter), he will be the 5th official frontman — not the 4th.

RE | 7/14/2006, 6:23 pm EST

Oh please. There was absolutly no proof offered beyond one guy who obviously had some kind of psychological issues. There was no real way to know if what he was putting on the internet was the same concert over and over again, let alone where it came from. It all could have been doctored for all you know. No one has certainly proven anything to me.

Too Funny | 7/14/2006, 7:29 pm EST

Rolling Stone has merit, trust me. What they reported is 100% concrete, irrefutable evidence. I know the guy who posted the Blog, and he is very credible. Nothing was doctored. I wouldn’t want to wake him back up if I were you…The guy is full of fire and if provoked, can and will sink Journey. Bet your life on it.

ThePerryCows | 7/14/2006, 10:40 pm EST

If it its an infection, why can’t it be treated? Cuz at 47 he cant cut the Perry mustard.

Nan | 7/14/2006, 11:00 pm EST

They just played at the venue where I work and the lead singer sounded good but no one will replace Steve Perry for real…at least in my head because he hit those high notes (way back when) and this guy didn’t. But they were still good. And my wedding song will always be “Open Arms”

If Dean had no proof then why did a noted journalist and owner of a certain board ask Journey for a comment and got none other than “Agueri has a “chronic” infection since before the tour” and BAM Agueri is out and Jeff Scott Soto in 4 shows into the tour?

Why hasn’t Agueri commented on his illness? He can type can’t he?

Eric Turnbow | 7/15/2006, 5:12 am EST

There is only ONE singer for JOURNEY and that is Steve Perry. No one can touch him. Journey is still a relevant a fantastic classic rock band on cd and on dvd with Steve Perry! The rest of those wanna bees simply suck. They are just a cover band now and have been since their real and only singer departed. I for one will treasure my original Journey records and the fake Journey does not even exist is you ask me! No Steve, no Jounrey! End of discussion. Why not reunite with all original members> That would sell tickets and produce new and revalent sounds! What up?

I’ll ask you if you want to dispute or refute Dean’s proof to provide some of yours. I’ll be waiting. By proof I mean actual recordings NOT your opinion, ok?

Steve Perry fan | 7/15/2006, 12:52 pm EST

The Journey fans don’t deserve this, no matter what lineup of Journey that you prefer.
What happened to Augeri should explain a lot of what Perry had to indure. Perry was smart and knew when enough was enough at any given time in his career with the band. He left at the top of his game and is an icon to his fans with an unblemished legacy.

Augeri should have taken some lessons from Perry on how to control his situation and protect himself.
Perry’s timeouts were necessary to his health and his place in Journey’s history, imo.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Finally, it is out that Steve Augeri lip-synchs! I can say that he does because I went to a concert of his…(which I regret but I was givin the tickets so I went!) And there was just way to much wierd things going on! Like he went behind stage sooo many times it’s not even funny! And it sounded too much like Steve Perry (The Voice) to NOT be him! People just need to face the fact that Steve Perry is the one who made Journey and NOONE can replace him! Noone can come even close to the beautiful voice that Steve Perry has! And Journey is not Journey without Steve Perry! But I am so glad that they have finally figured out that Steve Augeri was lip-synching! Thank the Lord! lol

Fascinating how Augeri is the “bad guy”. If he lip synched, you think the rest of the band wasnt in on it? You really think Neal didn’t know and ok it? You think it was Augeri’s idea in the first place? The band made Augeri the fall guy. But they were all in on it. Oh but the band is great and Augeri is junk. That’s exactly how the band wants you to feel. Meanwhile Augeri gets walked on and his career ruined. And your precious Jrny goes on. How gullible you all are.

The Real Truth | 7/16/2006, 4:52 am EST

None of the audio clips proved anything. Faithfully clip from the UK. Yeah, he couldn’t hit a high note and it hurt so he stopped singing. Has every singer always hit every high note? I haven’t. I’m a singer. And his voice wasn’t that bad after that high note. He hurt something. But he wasn’t out of key. Oh and Be Good To Yourself. Compare that to the Vegas DVD. Many differences in the vocal. Deano just fooled everyone. Good job Deano. Last laugh is on you. Oh and Rolling Stone got the # of lead singers wrong. There were 5, not 4. Very credible. Think again. Don’t just follow like sheep.

No need for JRNY to dismiss him officially now, and alienate any more fans, after LipsynchGate. It still doesn’t garner any sympathy from me on his LS issue, though…

I’m a sound engineer for a recording studio. Worked for lots of folks over the years including live gigs. Listened to the “Faithfully” boot of Augeri – no tapes being used. Read Deano’s blog and the Swedish bloke’s post. It doesn’t make any sense. Swedish bloke wants us to believe that a band like Journey would allow some little Swedish radio station to record and mix the feed? Journey brought along the big guns to mix their feed, Kevin Elson. Why would they let some little Swedish radio mix anything? This isn’t done in the biz folks. Bands never let anyone but their own people mix their feed to broadcast anywhere (’cept for the boots they can’t control o’course). You’ve all been had folks. Deano and Mr. Sweden are just pulling the p*iss out of you. And you bought it. Last laugh is on you. And don’t say that’s why Journey has JSS now. Something was going awry with Augeri’s voice. But he wasn’t lipsynching.

“I’m a sound engineer for a recording studio. Worked for lots of folks over the years including live gigs. Listened to the “Faithfully” boot of Augeri – no tapes being used.”

You are either in the wrong line of work, or are a bold faced liar. Tapes were used extensively starting early in the ‘05 tour. Prior to that, they were used to cover high notes occasionnally (this started in 2003). Up until 1:06, “Faithfully” is using an isolated lead vocal straight from the Vegas dvd. Then there is a glitch and Augeri is left floundering on his own.
This isn’t speculation. Many people within the industry have even confirmed this publicly on the web.
You are not a sound engineer, and if u are, you have a tin ear and should probably be selling shoes or something.

Sound Engineer, my ass | 7/17/2006, 6:38 pm EST

“But he wasn’t lipsynching.”

Oh yes he was.
Every song during the vast majority of the 2005 tour was lip synched with the exception of Loving Touching Squeezing. He also sang 40-60 second parts of the following songs: Place in Your Heart, Wheel in the Sky, Chain Reaction, Ask the Lonely, Be Good to Yourself, Stone in Love. The entire song would be lipped, and they would turn his mic on for the final minute remainder of the song so he could do a segue into the next tune. The only deviation from this was “Out of Harms Way” and “Faith in the Heartland”. He sang 30 second middle parts of both these tracks.
Again, you are not a sound engineer and don’t know what you are talking about.

wildone did you ever sing in your whole life? if you ever did you would understand how a voice can sound brilliant one day like doodoo the next and brilliant again the next day. i worked with a lot of famous singers live and in studio. many studio sessions had to be cancelled after they hit a high note sounding great up to then. blew out the voice for that day/week. came back and nailed it. heard the same things on tour. dont believe what some maniac fan puts on a blog and rs picks up from the blog. you all got snowed.

Sound engineer I am | 7/18/2006, 12:09 pm EST

ey sexymofo (nice name) yeah and they are all playing live right now. well except for the click track. and the bg vocals they are using on tour that still have augeri’s voice in the mix. augeri was the frontman yeah. but its neal’s band. and augeri wasnt lipsynching anyway. try to use those “sexy” brain cells. you’ll get there.

“and the bg vocals they are using on tour that still have augeri’s voice in the mix.”

They have altered the BG vocals.
Sounds different from years before and no, Augeri is not in the mix. Many fans who downloaded recent JSS/Journey boots noticed this and commented right away.
Now do you have any more assumptions to share?

Sound Engineer is a fake | 7/18/2006, 5:51 pm EST

“your dead dead dead wrong about Faithfully. listen again.”

First off, any passionate Journey fan can recognize the Vegas dvd instantly. Most of us have it on our Ipods. 1.06 of Faithfully is from the Vegas dvd. Then there is a glitch and Augeri is left to flounder on his own. Suddenly, he sounds like Joe Cocker encased in an iron lung. Literally, no high range. Secondly, I don’t have to “listen again”. Sources close to the band have even confirmed whats going on (off the record, of course).
Oh, but of course, you’re the one in the music biz with all the connections, right?
LMAO.
Go back to flipping burgers.

all you sheep that are trying to defend this band are the reason they got away with it for so long, this is kinda like a court of law….Innocent till proven guilty, so they had no reason to fess up,until they were challenged, but now they finally got caught red handed and are now trying to save face by changing singers… so the man is sick and cant sing…so what…that is life, that is when you should tell your fans what is up…then we would understand, and accept the problem, instead of faking it for years…. then it shows total disrespect for every musician that is trying to make it legitimately, so there is no excuse that justifies what they did, with their tapes, so I cant wait till the rest of you realize this band is a fraud, and stop throwing your money away

Sound Engineer is a fake | 7/18/2006, 6:37 pm EST

“that is when you should tell your fans what is up…then we would understand, and accept the problem, instead of faking it for years….”

Too true. I dont think any Journey fan would have held it against Steve if he came out and said something to the effect of “these songs are very challeneging to sing and I’m sad to say, I will have to relinquish the position of fronting this great rock band”. NOBODY would have held that against him. Instead, the band and mngt. decided to forge ahead. I would have understood if they used tapes merely to get through the one tour (2005-30th anniversary). But they got greedy. Once that tour ended, they went over to the UK and did the same thing. The egregiousness is compounded by the fact that those UK fans had been waiting forever to see the band. How low can u get?

wildone | 7/18/2006, 9:42 pm EST

SOUND ENGINEER nope never a singer but an infection is not like a cold thats going to go away in a day or two thats just common sense so if you think it did your kidding yourself bigtime here.I’ve worked around enough Dr.s to know that it just doesn’t happen(and yes I’ve asked)I’ve told them what was happening and they laughed saying well of course he sounds like crap and will do so until THE INFECTION goes away, and if he continues to use his voice to sing it can make matters even WORSE not better. So there goes that idea.

Sound engineer I am | 7/19/2006, 12:08 am EST

ok mates for starters Augeri’s voice is clearly still in the bg mix on the boots of JSS i heard. no doubt. you can hear a. the noo yawk accent b. his intonation. they havent remixed those bg vocals. listen carefully. he’s there. bg journey vocals havent been live since the 80s.
2nd faithfully the one on 2dorks isn’t the vegas dvd. analyze it. its very different. everytime augeri did it live slight differences. theyre there in the 2dorks one which was rockn’deno’s big proof. easy to get confused if you dont understand this.
3rd havent seen any proof from one single credible person who analyzed it. all i saw is a bunch of people posting on mr forum who could be anyone claiming they listened. oh are they pros? i did see proof from someone that had it analyzed by an independent firm who notarized the document. that was sent to me private. dont know if got posted anywhere as i wasnt paying attention back when this was all done. i heard that was sent to rolling stone and they opted not to print that. interesting.
4th i used the analogy of a cold to show how a voice can come and go. i wasnt saying augeri had a cold. he has and has had on and off a chronic throat infection. ask the doctors again because that can come and go to. you rest the voice a few days, you belt out and sound good. then you hit a tough note and wham you struggle. you should see what ive seen in the studio with lots of famous folk. youd be shocked. some of ‘em end up having surgery eventually but can still knock it out on and off in between.

Sound engineer I am,

Why I feel obligated to even answer this god only knows.

I don’t care for Ageri/Journey, what they did is unexcusable.
Of course they are singing LIVE
now but not with Ageri! JSS is not the right singer for this band either.

I have said before that they have tried to find a solution to this problem for the past 8 years and fact is they will NEVER find the solution.

To me and thousands out there the ONLY solution is if they made amends with Steve Perry. That catalogue is his and NO ONE will do it justice. Proof 1 ageri in the last eight years 2 and a half Cds none got air play. And now Jeff Scott Sotto it wont sell and we all know why.

For the record SexxyMofo is what
I use to describe Steve Perry. :)

Not referring to anyone on the MR.com Journey forum. People in the industry with ties to the band have commented on this story in other areas of MR.com
One notable musician, in particular, was very vocal about this. If you missed it, its your loss. If you had actual ties to the industry as you claim, then you’d know it to be fact.
And yes, “Faithfully” on 2dorks was from the Vegas dvd (at least up until 1:06 when the tape stopped).
Every show since early on in the 2005 tour utlizied the Vegas dvd when it came for the lead vox for “Faithfully”.
Sorry, you are so ill informed.
Keep posting.
You really make me feel superior.

alrighty mate. your contradicting yourself here. your not referring to anyone on MR, just the “people in the industry with ties to the band” that comment on MR. Who? Andrew? He wrote a store with no official comments. Since when is he tied to the band?

“One notable musician, in particular, was very vocal about this.”

Who? Jeremey Huns… who plays in a Journey tribute band and has always been a major Steve Perry fan and Steve Augeri hater? Yeah. I surely believe him.

“And yes, “Faithfully” on 2dorks was from the Vegas dvd (at least up until 1:06 when the tape stopped).”

Listen again. Because it wasn’t/isn’t. Clean your ears out. And have it analyzed by someone who’s got a clue.

“I don’t care for Ageri/Journey, what they did is unexcusable.”

Whole lotta other bands did and do what Deano accuesed Journey of, even the great Madonna. Aerosmith does it. But where’s the proof Journey did it. Before you hate them get some proof. None exists.

“Of course they are singing LIVE
now but not with Ageri! JSS is not the right singer for this band either.”

They’re not 100% live even now. They’re using taped back up vocals with Augeri’s voice in the mix.

“To me and thousands out there the ONLY solution is if they made amends with Steve Perry.”

I think that’s up to Steve Perry and he says no way.

“Proof 1 ageri in the last eight years 2 and a half Cds none got air play.”

And what other bands from that era are getting airplay? I’ll tell you. Aerosmith — but they never went away. U2, same thing. Any band who went away and then shows up on the road many years later becomes nostalgia band. Remember Perry didn’t want to tour after ROR. He was the reason the band went away. That’s why they don’t get airplay. They wouldn’t get airplay today even if Perry was with them again. Think!!!!

“For the record SexxyMofo is what
I use to describe Steve Perry.”

That’s lovely. But maybe you should think of something else for your own name, huh? Otherwise, it looks like you’re describing how you find yourself. Dumbass.

woah. saw jrny last w/end w/wifey. she wondered where the “new guy” was. heard he is sick. did a search and found this. cant get the link to work there. too busy? anyone got that link? any proof of this?

Sound Engineer Dear, | 7/20/2006, 3:35 am EST

First of all, I don’t care about Madonna or any of the ones you mentioned.
I ONLY cared about the Steve Perry fronted Journey which is the MOST
successful era! I listened to ALL of the clips that were posted that’s proof
whether you like it or not!

I said the LEAD vocals are live now! But I must be honest here I really don’t give a flying f*ck!

Yes I know he said “NO WAY” I am telling you and many like you that
this is the only solution. Meaning get that 8 year karaoke Journey off
of the road it is starting to make the die hard fans embarrassed to even say that they were fans once.

If Steve Perry was with them believe me the band sound would keep evolving with the times and would get airplay. Remeber we are talking about none other that Steve Perry! He would steer them in the right direction.

He was having personal issues then with his moms passing and breaking up with his long time love I think he pretty much needed the break love.

Ok dear, but when they came back um did they or didn’t they get airplay and a grammy nomination?

No way don’t blame the current line up hang ups on Steve Perry they are NOT getting any AIRPLAY because they don’t have chemistry, writting talent and as much as the fans claim “this band is the tightest is ever been” that is a flat out lie by the way” ths was just an excuse for hem to RAKE in as much dough as the NAME Journey would. Knowing damn well it was NOT the Journey of yesteryear can you say rip off?

Yes they would Perry gets press and well thet’s another thing current Journey lacks!

Why should I change my user ID?
I am describing my favorite frontman dear never claimed otherwise.
Ok engineer man, I have been polite to you can’t you do the same?

Jim Galvin | 7/20/2006, 1:40 pm EST

Fist Of All, Steve Augeri shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentance as Ashley Simpson, Britney or Milli Vanilli….The years of singing that high take a constant toll on the vocal chords, if Augeri was lip-syncing I couldn’t tell and I was at the Holmdel show a few weeks ago nd i found that his vocals were a little strained, IF you’re gonna lip-sync why use strained vocals?? And for all of you Steve Perry fans, if you think Perry can sing like that anymore, you are sorely mistaken! I’m not bashing Steve Perry, I Love his voice, but it won’t be like it was 20 years ago if he went out on tour tomorrow! As for Lip-Syncing on the Vegas DVD, ummm? Ever Hear Of Studio Enhancement? Yeah, they do that when releasing Live concerts on CD or DVD, they go in a punch in vocals, guitars etc where it’s a little screwed up. Check into it if you don’t believe me! Steve Augeri still has an incredible voice, I knew him back in the Tall Stories/Tyketto days in Brooklyn NY. Leave The Guy Alone, there are better things to worry about than someone with a back up track.

Peace

“alrighty mate. your contradicting yourself here. your not referring to anyone on MR, just the ‘people in the industry with ties to the band’ that comment on MR. Who? ”

There are more sections to MR.com than just the Journey forum, blockhead. In one particular section, one very notable and respected melodic rock artist was talking about this scandal daily for months now. And NO, for the last time, I am not referring to Jeremy the tribute band guy. And by the way, he is not, nor has ever been an “Augeri hater”. In fact, he has been to several Augeri Journey concerts.

“Listen again. Because it wasn’t/isn’t. Clean your ears out. And have it analyzed by someone who’s got a clue.”

Don’t have to. I have recieved more boots from the 2005 tour and the UK tour than I care to count. All of the same. All of them utilize the Vegas dvd on the same tracks (Faithfully, being one of the most flagrantly obvious). Just because you have a stolen copy of pro-tools on your computer doesn’t make you a sound engineer. Hate to break it to yah. Moreover, I don’t have to listen to these boots for the umpteenth time, this story has been confirmed by numerous sources close to the band-repeatedly.

“Very wrong. Analyze them. Get your head out of your butt first.”

If you say so, mister sound engineer. Did you know JSS auditioned for Journey prior to his recent inclusion. Back when Augeri was even still in the band?
Bet you didn’t.
Why? – Because you have no sources, have no contacts, and are talking out of your bum.
Go listen to “Butterfly” and give urself multiple orgasms.
Poser.

Augeri is a liar, I'm afraid. | 7/20/2006, 5:45 pm EST

“Steve Augeri still has an incredible voice…”

Not anymore. Has about as much range as Perry these days. If he looks you in the eye and tells you anything different he is lying to you. Steve Augeri lip synched starting from early on in the 2005 tour, continued into the UK mini tour and ended recently on the Def tour (due to the heightened scrutiny incurred from the aforementioned blog in the RS article).

Here's another liar... | 7/20/2006, 5:50 pm EST

“Dean wont make another blog or bring his old one back. Band’s legal dept. made sure of that. Gone for good. Dean wont say much of anything anymore. The lawyers scared him.”

Deano encountered no legal hindrances in his attempt to reveal this scandal to the public. This is owed to the fact that 100% of what he said in his blog is incontrovertible fact. Neal is notorious for speaking out against any unjust criticism. A few years back some Perrynutzoids accused the band of utilizing Perry’s voice in ads for the current lineup. Neal wasted no time in speaking out. Where is Neal to be found in regards to this scandal?
He won’t speak, because frankly he is embarassed. His band has become what he detests the most, a bunch of charlatans.

Here's another liar... | 7/20/2006, 6:24 pm EST

The Guy Alone, there are better things to worry about than someone with a back up track.

Dumbass.... | 7/20/2006, 6:26 pm EST

“there are better things to worry about than someone with a back up track.”

You conveniantly omitted the fact that this person with a back up track has been fleecing hardworking fans for over 12 months. The ads on the radio touted a nite of “live rock n’ roll”. Total bullocks. True, nobody gives a hoot about pre-recorded BG vocals, but the lead should always be largely live. Steve Augeri sang minimally for nearly a year.

first of all i never said i had sources in the music industry. i said im a sound engineer for a studio and i do live gigs for some bands here n there. second i am in the uk not the us. journey was a big hit band in the us in the 80s. 20+ years later they arent exactly the talk of the town among sound engineers in the uk. they werent even a big hit in the uk in the 80s to begin with. they arent making chart topping hits anywhere these days. no one is talking about them full stop. third i dont know mr.com inside and out because i have a job and a family and a life. i dont spend my entire life in front of the computer screen to see what the latest word is on mr.com. fourth if you have some proof of where someone spoke out about this put it out here and let us all see it. ill give it a looksee and tell you what i think. but until i see some proof i dont believe it. im no major augeri fan. i dont have his posters plastered on my walls. nor do i have any of steve perry or journey. i just like the music. i liked perrys voice and i liked augeris voice. he done good with the band when perry wouldnt tour no more. but the ‘proof’ i heard of faithfully and be good to yourself didnt prove nothing. so this is just talk until someone puts up something that is proof. i saw the analysis saying what 2dorks consider proof isnt proof. i listened with my own skilled and trained ears and it wasnt proof of nothing. until i see something else that is proof this is all just talk. if you have some proof put it where your mouth is. full stop.

You couldn’t be more wrong, I’m afraid to report. Perhaps its because the ad-libs (found on the DVD) had been removed from the isolated Vegas vocal track of BGTY. Otherwise, those two tracks (BGTY & Faithfully) are utilizing the vocals from the Vegas dvd. This is the way its been since early on in the 05 tour and continuing onwards thru the UK tour and into the early portion of the Leppard tour. We’ll just have to agree to disagree. I simply know more than you. It’s ok.

Never said that | 7/21/2006, 5:17 pm EST

“just lead singers are not. is that the criteria we use?”

Never said that. Everyone is culpable in this scandal. Everyone – right down to the techs and road crew. However, ultimately, Augeri made the choice to go out there and personally perpetrate this fraud. No one put a gun to his head. I have had the privelidge of meeting him and he is a GREAT and very charming man. But has about all the ethics of Al Capone.

first of all i have seen no proof augeri lip synched to nothing. but lets say for a minute its true for the sake of argument. if he made the decision to walk out there doing that it was with neals blessing. probably was neals idea. what funny is you all jump on augeri. what about your beloved neal? if its true hes the one who allowed his band to be a mockery.

and thats one of the big reasons i know this is all b/s and just a plot to get rid of augeri. because if people were really mad about this theyd be mad at neal and asking him for a refund. instead they blast augeri only and go see the band loving them.

so apart from the fact that theres no proof been posted that proves anything, you can clearly see the ones saying this are augeri haters, perry lovers. how pathetic. perry aint coming back folks.

2dorks is wrong in saying that the “Be Good to Yourself” clip is both Vegas and Manchester played simultaneously together. That is false. The clip is of the Manchester show ONLY. The lead vocal is an isolated vocal straight from the Vegas dvd. Ad-libs and extended parts have been excised but what lead vocal there is is 100% from the Vegas dvd. The only brief parts that feature Steve Augeri actually on-mic (and not on-tape) are from 2:16-2:23. He also attempts to finish the song using his real voice at 4:09-4:10, but as one can clearly hear, his voice fails him. These are the only moments in the song where you hear Augeri’s currently damaged voice (excluding the obligatory well-wishing and saying goodnite to the crowd and his segue into the encore). If you can’t tell this vocal is from the Vegas dvd, I again must kindly suggest you find a new line of work…as you clearly have a tin ear.

Umm Rolling Stone…..you do know that the fan that “uncovered” this and called Journey oput on it also had six months to live in 2004 because he was dying of cancer(miraculous recovery), gave Sylvester Stallone the Journey Generations cd to use in the upcoming Rocky 6 movie and Sly contacted him about it, (we’re still waiting for him to post the letter Sly sent), and in January of this year, he killed three people while driving an Amtrak train in California when their pickup got stuck on the tracks. He is a very “reliable” source. GREAT job researching where you get your stories from!

There is plenty. In fact, you can even find live footage on youtube and compare the vocal tracks them. All the same.
I am certainly not gonna do you any favors and help you out. You’re the one who came in boasting of his industry credentials. Do your own research. It’s been out there and continues to be so.
Though Augeri’s firing is really all the vindication any suspicious fan should need.

Stick that camera up your bum | 8/8/2006, 9:19 am EST

“With cameras and all eyes on him what did Deano see and hear that we didn’t?”

Where is the Dallas dvd they filmed this year? Why did they cancel their South America concert when it belatedly came to their attention that it was to be televised LIVE. In a live concert setting it’s harder to detect. You’re caught up in the live kinetic energy. On video and cd, it all becomes very obvious. And that is why so many bootleggers have spoken up!

Is it live or is it Memorex ? | 8/10/2006, 7:37 pm EST

For what’s it worth… I frankly was a skeptic after seeing this debate rage on for over two months, which is why I posted a request for someone to provide a link or link(s) to the evidence. However, after a little digging around, I was able to find the samples myself. While the Manchester samples (Faithfully, Be Good to Yourself) are intriguing, the real evidence is in comparing multiple shows from 2005 and 2006. I’m not completely convinced that the soundtrack from the Vegas DVD is being used, but I’m more than convinced that “something” pre-recorded is being used to cover up Steve Augeri’s actual singing. The vocal performances being identical on so many songs (on so many different nights) is an indicator that something is going on.

I’ve heard rumors that Steve Augeri will rejoin the band before the Def Leppard/Journey tour is over — but I have doubts whether this will really happen (or ever happen).

…..And for all of you Steve Perry fans, if you think Perry can sing like that anymore, you are sorely mistaken!

……..Of course he cant sing like that anymore, you tard…that is why he left at the top of his game…go out in style, before you get old and suck… you notice steve perry aint up there making an ass out of himself, pretending. He has earned the right to sit back and collect a check for the years of hard work he has already done, and also get paid when journey plays his songs, with their new singers.
You take a nobody from the gap, and put him out on the road and expect him to perform like a machine, every day…of course his voice will be toast, Dude should have said, I cant do this, i am out, then no hard feelings, but no, they got greedy……so he really IS in the same class as ahlee and milli and any other poser ever…..you all who defend this tool are sheep, Journey sucks…EACH IT AND I

Yes it’s true, the hard drive crashed and there was poor Steve Augeri naked with his real voicals coming through the P.A.
Deen Castronovo (who can play all SteveSmith’s Drum parts while singing all of Perry’s vocal parts perfectly) saved the day by jumping off the drum riser and taking over vocals. His roadie took over drumming.
No one has heard Steve Augeri sing for 3 years. I did a video of them in 1999 at Concord Pavillion and poor Stevie (a very nice guy) was having trouble even then. People told me it was the best Video of Journey they had ever seen, all except Neal Schon who watched my video and cringed as Augeri regularly went off key and his voice cracked. Neal has perfect pitch. Herbie Herbert (former Journey Manager) told me “Man when I first heard Augeri’s audition tape, I said he owns these songs.”
But the following year Stevei A. was in trouble, by the time they did the Live DVD Video from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nocturne (The video production company formerly owned by Schon & Herbert) had two isolate all of Stevie A.’s vocal tracks and “Fix” them in Pro-Tools, correcting pitch etc. A deviated septum surgery didn’t help matters at all.
When you watch my videos “Concord & Beyond” &”Fillmore Boogie” on the http://www.journeymusic.com website (Click on “Fan Club” then “Photos & Videos” to download, you’ll notice I had to take Stevie A. out of both videos or they never would’ve seen the light of day.
Former Journey guitar wizard/composer George Tickner told me yesterday “It’s pathetic, now they’re only in it for the money”. Former Production Manager Allen Craft also is “Feelin’ That Way” he said to me “You can’t stop the Gravy Train” .
Seems like this Gravy Train has de-railed itself, now it’s a Crazy Train. By the way I was at Skywalker Rance when Journey recorded “Trial By Fire” and Steve Perry was pleasant and could still sing great. If they had waited until Perry decided to have surgery on his own and not gone out with Augeri, Perry would still be with them today. I always said “Hell, just put him in a wheel chair and get him to the show and “Wheel In This Guy”.
Oh well as Perry said to Jonathan Cain “You know there’s no going back”

Interesting that this thread is still ‘topical’ as only a few short month ago we were debating Perry/ Augeri/ Journey and the (subsequently successful) UK/ Euro dates.
Now the same thorny issues may be raised again with the band having just announced further UK dates for March ’07, and might even still be fronted by Jeff Scott Soto.

I understand the official statement regarding Augeri’s (temporary?) departure and JSS stepping in, but don’t accept it.

I genuinely believe the lip sync allegations were true and for me it’s an unforgivable act – especially with the history, legacy and pedigree of this particular band.

Recent reports and reviews seem to indicate fairly mixed receptions with JSS – many love it, some just wonder what the hell is going on and others like myself were just hoping they would get the Leppard Tour over and put it to bed, leaving the legacy a little tarnished but intact, based on past glories.

Oh, and considering Steve P again would be gargantuan p.r. but may turn out to be no revelation.
SP had lost a part of his range by the ‘Medicine’ tour (but jeez he could still deliver), and a further near-decade of retirement will not have helped the voice.
Would any real fan want to see the ‘classic’ line up one more time if there was any chance of the boys not being able to recreate the magic?
Well, yes, I would love to see it one more time but based on current activities and relationships (let alone could SP still cut it?) I think it’s highly improbable.
In fact I don’t think SP would want to touch it now – been there, done that, bought the Infinity Tour T-Shirt, thanks.

Which is a shame, because Perry may well have lost some of his register and confidence (having not sung in anger for years other than occasional soundtrack and guest vocalist work), but his very presence and voice would change the dynamics dramatically.

The presence of Perry and Schon on stage and the ego bubbles that surrounded them (certainly from the Frontiers tour onwards) were so big that it’s a miracle Cain, Valory and Smith could fit on stage. Any friction between them on stage or in the studio (which was actually a positive as they constantly raised each other’s game) produced that very fire that cannot be reproduced without both being part of the entity IMHO.
Heart and Soul baby, Heart and Soul.

Luckily, or unjustly (depending on your stance), the band have probably ridden the storm out, and the vast majority of Journey fans and concert goers will probably never know there ever was such a ‘controversy’ in the first place.
Add to the fact that the Tour with Def Leppard brought them to bigger numbers than they could commands on their own (audiences of between 5000 and 20000 depending on locale) and you have, ironically, their healthiest situation in years (by ‘today’s Journey’ standards).

Personally?
I had limited interest in the post 1998 Journey, and now I have zero respect.
I was also lucky enough to have seen them ‘back in the day’and I’ll keep those memories, thank you very much.
Let the Journey end guys, because you’ve done nothing worthy of the name lately – quite the opposite.
And if you don’t agree you can eat my 1979 Evolution Tour Boxer Shorts.

I am also a sound engineer and producer. And, I am a singer/performer two, so I know things from both sides of the mic. I know a few digital and mixing tricks of my own, but I can’t hear anything that supports this. I listened to both audio tracks and I cannot hear what others seem to hear. It sounds like a very live vocal to me, and I hear no ‘tape stops or glitches’. If one is concerned about Steve A’s voice being able to hold up, they should be. This is an abnormally high area for any male singer. The original Steve Perry couldn’t maintain it himself, and there are very few others who could. Stevie A’s voice is over-tired, and pushe more he’d do the same permanent damage to his voice that Perry did.

Back in Journey’s heydays, the best job of covering Journey songs was always done by females. Maybe Journey should consider going that route and add a former FEMALE lead soloist (like, say, a Taylor Dayne) to the band the way Queen added Paul Rodgers. TWO followings combined with the added vocal strength that’ll never blow out the way a man’s would.

- Voicedude

BTW, I used Taylor Dayne ONLY as an example. There are dozens of other females singers that could do the job as well or maybe even better. It was just the first good example I coiuld think of. But just in case you doubt Miss Dayne’s ability to rock, check out this mash-up I produced with Taylor singing with Placebo. Her original vocal takes on a whole new texture with rock guitars behind it. One more thing: I’ve seen her rather recently and she’s STILL got it!

Steve Augeri is a little sissy boy, that will always be remembered for how he lip syncs, and how he got busted out onstage, what a loser, anyone that believes in him is a loser too……

Debi, New York Long Island | 11/28/2006, 9:28 pm EST

I am here to defend Steve Perry. Steve is the greatest singer of all time. Steve Augeri is no match for the real thing. Steve Augeri should try to have his own voice instead of trying to duplicate one that is out of his league. What Journey did to Steve Perry was a disappointment for all JOURNEY fans. I am still a big Journey fan but the old time Journey is good enough for me. Steve Perry was the heart and soul of Journey and without him they will never be the same!!!!

Ross from Prestwick, Scotland | 12/20/2006, 8:49 am EST

What do the fans who were desperately waiting for Augeri’s return think now, after the ’shock’ announcement that Soto is now official and the new lead vocalist? I guaranteed to those that would listen that Soto would be announced as the new singer before the end of ‘06, yet the statement will still be met with ’shocked’ stunned’ & ’saddened’ comments from the hardcore ‘Generations’, whereas a select few knew it was coming – and the truth behind why.
And a Merry Christmas to all my readers…

JRNYBABE | 1/19/2007, 7:53 pm EST

I’ve been in the front row at more than a dozen JRNY shows over the past 5 years. Steve Augeri DID NOT lip synch!
This past year, Steve has been sick and with the non stop touring was unable to recover. The band was not even suppose to tour in 2006, but according to Neal “it’s all about the money”. SA will be better off on his own anyways. I will no longer support JRNY, but am looking forward to Steve Augeri’s fist solo CD.

JRNYFAN | 1/20/2007, 9:39 am EST

I saw them in concert with JSS and it was disappointing. It was my first time seeing them live. JSS needed a backup track for sure. He may have a good voice in his own right, but he does not fit this group like SA or SP did. Why don’t they just have karaoke night, and pull a few people from the crowd to sing the hits? Maybe now they will become a punk band and lose the rest of their fans.

susan mobely | 2/13/2007, 8:29 am EST

no journey without steve perry, he is a living legend

Ponylegend | 3/19/2007, 5:57 pm EST

I saw Journey with JSS in Minneapolis,Mn and Fargo,ND. Am I the only one who noticed JSS singing the songs four octaves lower than SP or SA? He sonded more like Joel Lynn Turner or Ronnie James Dio than anyone who should be fronting Journey. I felt like I was watching a Journey tribute band!

Did someone say Deano killed three people in a train crash? I’d LOVE to see the proof of this. I think you’re just making it up.

in my opinion, who ever fronts journey as lead singer can not even come close to steve perry, to me steve perry is the heart and sole of journey, it was his voice that made journey what it is today. i have been listening to steve perry sing from the first time he joined journey and he just blew me away with how well he could sing and how well he could hit thoese high notes. the last two so called lead singers of journey can not even come close or be able to fill steve perry’s shoes when it comes to singing the bands music. i just wish that steve and neil would sit down and patch up there differances and be friends and make great music together again. to me with out steve perry in the band they do not seem to be the same group that i came to know and who’s music that i realy enjoy listening to. i have heard both of journey’s so called lead singers and to me neither one of them even comes close to the real steve perry.

angelo hawley | 9/12/2007, 9:31 pm EST

i agree with susan mobely that there is no journey with out steve perry. he is a living legend, in my own opinion steve perry will always be rembered as the man, the voice, the heart and sole of journey. with out steve perry being the lead singer of the band it is just a novelty act. that is how i feel about the way journey is now.

michael | 11/26/2007, 11:27 am EST

give SA a credit its not easy to step on someone’s shoes you know, ,well atleast he tried so dam hard to entertain SP’s fans. even i can sing faithful with 80% SP’s voice, no BS.

31 yr Journey fan from Florida | 3/13/2008, 8:01 am EST

For all the S.P. haters….f.u.
Steve is the voice of journey. He can not be replaced. His voice is unique and peeps luv Journey for that. He can still sing just fine(for all u haters…don’t hate on what you don’t have). That’s not something u lose like your wallet or cell phone…HELLOOO. It is his voice. It will never go away…Gawd how dumb.
I believe he(SA) lip synced(wont say his name..never have..dont like him..or the fact the he tried stepping in S.P.’s shoes..nobody can do that..i have no respect for the man).
Journey is S.P. like it or not. Hellooo they put out two albums and got nowhere until 1976 when they wrote Wheel in the sky and brought Steve Perry on. Ever since then they rocked.
They then tried to replace him cause they were impatient and money hungry…WELL look where that got them. I will never go see them in concert. I will not give them my money until S.P. is back with them. Cause I am paying money to see ‘JOURNEY’ and there is no ‘JOURNEY’ without Steve Perry..
Agauri(dont know how to spell it and dont care)..sux and can’t sing his way out of a bad karaoke contest.
They need to just STOP…or bring back Steve Perry.
And no I have no sympathy/empathy for anyone trying to fill Steve Perry’s shoes.

michael from houston,texas | 4/18/2008, 11:58 pm EST

listen to the tall stories cd augeri doesnt copy perry he sounds alot like him but he isnt copying
him augeri was 31 then and a chronic throat infection will rob you of your vocals if you dont get complete rest i saw augeri with journey in las vegas in 2002 i was there he sang fine i was in the first row maybe ten feet away at the most i am not a sound guy but i am a doctor ear nose and throat
riggors of touring will damage your voice journey played 150 shows a year
being in the medicle field i know lots of doctors and by chance a few in new york augeri did have major vocal strains and the septum didnt help he wasnt chosen because he looked good it was because he could sing at that time steve perry was great no doubt but augeri had a great stage presents
journeys old manager herbie has an axe to grind lets be real!
with perry and augeri
i examine people everyday and again at the concert i was at the lead vocal was real and i am not a sound guy but i am a doctor been one for 22 years
maybe he did need help towards the end as its obvious as castronova sang lead many times i just got back from firefest and yes augeri can still sing
steve perry whom i admire cant sing like he was 30 anymore either
but still has a nice voice
the new guy is just a coverband guy who can sound like others
he even sounds like robin zander when the zoo sings cheap trick
dont stop believing was great in vegas and part of the song augeri was on his own
be mad at neil schon making money was more important than any human being voice again augeri sounded great at firefest this year

he still sang in key
