Everyones an expert, Everyone is a critict. The biggest problem with music today is that people are more concerned with fashion and trends then they are the music. We should be so lucky that real musicians like Bob Dylan, Bob Weir, Levon Helm, and Phil Lesh are still out there playing for the love of music and performance. Once they are gone people, it may become a lonely world. American Idol is killing music and making it a fashion freak show…. Thank God Dylan is comming around again so I can finally breath…

I wonder if he is going to use the word dumptruck again?

After glancing through some of the comments here I felt compelled to add a comment. Ever notice how when some folks don’t understand something — like a photograph or album cover artwork — their immediate reaction is to slag it. Dylan has been around the charts and in our lives since the pre-Beatles in America 60’s. He’s written hundreds of songs, released dozens of albums, something I doubt anyone posting on this site has ever done. Although our modern times seem to exalt and elevate critics and their opinions it’s better to remember that the honours and accolades belong to those who actually step into the arena, or onto the stage or into the recording studio. G. K. Chesterton once offered that a “critic is some one who knows the way but can’t drive the car.” Friends, just cause you know how to brush your teeth, don’t start thinking you’re a dentist… I can’t help but chuckle at what Dylan’s reaction to these comments would be. But here’s a hint: There wouldn’t be one cause ol’ Bob doesn’t bother listening to the rabble. Although every so often his songs are kind of like mirrors that we are afraid to look at…

John,

I would try rec.music.dylan. I am sure that you already have checked out bobsboots.com and http://www.expectingrain.com/. If not, enjoy. There are thousands of bootlegs reviewed on the Bobs Boots site (you can search by date, venue, title, etc) the Expecting rain site is a daily coolection of news stories where Bob is mentioned. Sometimes it is uesless, but sometimes not.

I’ve enjoyed the three Dylan topics on these RS boards - who knows where a good discussion on Bob can be had on some unofficial Dylan board?

Stuporfly | 7/17/2006, 3:50 pm EST

trust yourself - Thanks for the good information. I personally love the photograph, but the font makes it look like a cigarette ad in Rolling Stone.

matt | 7/17/2006, 2:18 pm EST

I hope he plays “Ain’t Talkin”…I’ve heard it’s magic.

John | 7/17/2006, 1:28 pm EST

I’m going to the Washington, Pa. show as well - can’t wait!

matt | 7/16/2006, 4:27 pm EST

anyone else going to see Bob Dylan this summer? I’ve got tickets for the Washington, PA show.

John | 7/15/2006, 11:42 pm EST

Thanks for the excellent info. Trust Yourself!

The CD title is an obvious reference to the classic Charles Chaplin film of the same name. Chaplin made history with his film commentary on the anxiety and injustice man must endure in a modern mechanized world. Dylan has often explored these themes.

The cover of Modern Times is a famous photo by Ted Croner who died on Monday at age 82. Entitled “Taxi,New York Night” , the photo, taken in 1947-1948. is an example of his sriking black and white images of New York, a city he loved. He was in the Army Air Corps during World War 2 and photographed the destruction after the Atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. He ran a shop on W. 58th st. in NYC and was likely known to Dylan in his early years in the city. His work has been shown in the Museum of Modern Art. though many posts here have expressed dislike for the cover, I find it a beautiful and evocative use of one fine artist by another.

I think the design is also indicative of the accelerated pace of change in our world, but a lot of it is running in circles. Indeed, what’s old is new again.

matt | 7/15/2006, 3:06 am EST

I like the album cover. along with the name of the album,it’s saying that everything that was once current and hip will come around again. much like bob dylan himself.

Dylan fans, the cover could be a picture of a turd and we wouldnt care. Right? Here’s the thing. A new Dylan CD.

Dylan Fan in Milwaukee | 7/13/2006, 1:49 pm EST

C’Mon. I don’t care about the cover. It’s about music. Also, I think that the “what does it all mean” comment has to do with you buzzkillers that study every word of every Dylan song, looking for the meaning. Can’t a song just be a song?

Kira | 7/13/2006, 12:26 pm EST

You poopheads. Cover is swell, name aint, yet I belive that Bobo has his mystiq reasons. Empire Burlesque is not a bad album at all. Despite it’s faults, it still is better, compaired to non-Dylan music.

Dan Melenka | 7/12/2006, 10:09 am EST

cover shmover its a new dylan cd . His last two were really good . Hes the master no american Idle.

Jim | 7/12/2006, 9:11 am EST

I think the cover is great. What’s with you negative pinheads???????

danw | 7/12/2006, 5:59 am EST

come on, Love and theft was hardly a classic cover

Man Or Ash | 7/12/2006, 1:03 am EST

Bob Dylan isn’t done making good music. In todays era of crap I think we need someone like Dylan to remind us that music truly can be good when it’s not polished and fancy, he proved it in the 60s, he proved it with “Time Out Of Mind” as we as “Love and Theft” and I don’t see this album being different. An album cover doesn’t prove anything about the album, so quit complaining if you havn’t heard the album yet you dumbasses.

modern times back again

Ernie | 7/11/2006, 3:20 pm EST

I remember the comments before “love and theft.” the same with “time out of mind,” everything was negative. people just can’t wait for him to fail. he will not fail. he is a freak of nature. dont question him, just be thankful that he is still putting out. long live bob.

jokerman | 7/11/2006, 11:58 am EST

like Bob really needs you clowns to put your 2 cents in about his covers. that is a classic, fantastic photograph. best plan is to sit down, shut up, and let the King take you for a ride (and i don’t mean elvis).

LAWRENCE LUCAS | 7/11/2006, 9:23 am EST

Can’t judge a book by it’s cover.

clese | 7/10/2006, 11:19 pm EST

It’s already been said that there were 10 originals, so none of the tracks are covers.

beeper | 7/10/2006, 9:57 pm EST

What’s the correlation between good Dylan album covers and good Dylan albums? Better the cover, better the album (Freewhellin’, Blonde, Tracks,) Or pathetic covers, e.g., Saved, Empire, and Knocked Out.

old folkster | 7/10/2006, 8:38 pm EST

Better cover than “Self Portrait” anyway…I’ll probably download it from a music service so that’s a moot point. Regardless, if that’s Muddy Water’s Rollin’ and Tumblin’ I look forward to hearing it.

rilo | 7/10/2006, 7:04 pm EST

***a cover

rilo | 7/10/2006, 7:03 pm EST

come on bob, stick with the good, old looks. please don’t try and be mature with an over that looks like it should say kenny g.

deadhead | 7/10/2006, 7:00 pm EST

aww man. that cover is definately a let down.

tycho | 7/10/2006, 6:03 pm EST

it’s not TOO late!!

can someone PLEASE make a proper cover design? maybe a contest? Even the Neil Young cover looks better

sumpt | 7/10/2006, 5:11 pm EST

sounds nice. i see a few Grateful Dead-tinged song titles. Robert Hunter dipped into the same well that Dylan did, though. And Bobby D. loves him some Dead.
