As part of our tribute week for the now-defunct UK show Top of the Pops, we’ve collected some crucial video clips:

1. The Smiths: A young glowering Morrissey is impossibly sexy during “This Charming Man,” with flowers and balloons and flashing lights.

2. New Order: In the early ’90s, TOTP took a new approach when British bands had a hit single but were out of the country on tour: the show would dispatch a BBC camera crew and film the group performing their song in a location that exemplified the local culture of wherever they happened to be (the Red Square if the band was in Moscow, a Shinto temple in Japan, etc.). New Order were in California when “Regret” was climbing the charts, and the group decided that the best exemplar of local culture was Baywatch. This amazingly funny clip features them performing the song on the beach with a volleyball game in full effect behind them, and an extensive cameo from David Hasselhoff.

3. Beck: Just 23 years old back in 1993, Beck performs “Loser” with a whole band of senior citizens (some with spectacular hippie beards).

4. John Lennon: An intense performance of “Instant Karma,” with a blindfolded Yoko Ono sitting behind him.

5. Nirvana: Singing over the backing track of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Kurt Cobain displays his contempt for the exercise by making up new lyrics and singing the whole song in an odd quasi-Morrissey voice. And fellating the microphone.
