Ten Sleater-Kinney Songs That Make Them the Best American Punk Band Ever. Really.

6/28/06, 12:28 pm EST

Thank you for the music, Sleater-Kinney. This gang of three was the best American punk rock band ever. EVER. (No disrespect to the Ramones–S-K called one of their best songs “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone,” cleverly swiping the riff from the Ramones’ 1992 non-hit “Tomorrow She Goes Away,” itself based on the Shadows’ “Apache.”) They stayed true to the Pacific Northwest riot grrrl ideals that inspired them, but they didn’t waste time critiquing the mainstream–instead, they seized their own independent vision of freedom, acted it out, lived it out, gave that vision a sound. That’s why they never sounded like anybody else, and that’s why their music remained intensely moving while other bands ran out of gas.

That’s also why they kept such a tight connection with their fans. “It’s like a game of Marco Polo,” Carrie Brownstein told Rolling Stone in 2003. “There’s all these people with their eyes shut trying to drown out the cacophony of bad music. Searching for each other in the dark.”

In twelve years, they never made a weak record. Which was the best, Call The Doctor or Dig Me Out? Or The Woods, which was last year and a whole new heavy sound? Nobody expected Sleater-Kinney to stick together this long, least of all themselves – but here are ten crucial reasons to be glad they did. Farewell, Sleater-Kinney – go easy, step lightly, stay free.

“The Day I Went Away,” Sleater-Kinney (1995)
“More Than A Feeling,” b-side (1995)
“I’m Not Waiting,” Call The Doctor (1996).
“Call The Doctor,” Call the Doctor (1996)
“One More Hour,” Dig Me Out (1997)
“Start Together,” The Hot Rock (1999)
“Get Up,” The Hot Rock (1999)
“You’re No Rock & Roll Fun,” All Hands On The Bad One (2000)
“Jumpers,” The Woods (2005)
“Modern Girl,” The Woods (2005)

hi whats up sing it or not stupid

sunni | 4/14/2008, 9:07 am EST

Sleater Kinney’s “the woods” was the last cd i will ever buy! The Ramones, have spirit, but their music is repetative and their lyrics leave me wanting. Its funny to me that so many people list them as the best by default! and Green Day hasn’t put out a good album since “dookie”. Funny their album is named after shit and their songs are shit. SK writes lyrics from the soul that are relevant to people today. They have grown by leaps and bounds musically. Never have I been disappointed by any of thier albums. Other bands do not stick togehter for 10 years, consistently creat new and intreasting music, at the same time staying true to their roots and connected to their fan base! try to see Green Day pull that off PAH! silly little boys…..

Punk never died…disco sells as much today as it did in 1975…the nasty underground, sweaty, hardcaore,s hit is just as big as it EVER WAS…punk never went away…there are a SHIT LOAD OF BANDS in every state that play old school punk shit..plain and simple. That old school punk syle(not pop punk)never died. ANY STYLE OF music is still played out there. Wake up and look around.

Mattimus Prime | 2/14/2008, 12:55 pm EST

Are you kidding me?…yes punk is still around….it’s only proclaimed dead by self-important punkers who think they are better than everyone else. As for american punk bands better than
S-K you don’t have to look very far. First of all there are the classics Iggy and The Stooges, Ramones, New York Dolls. Then of course there is Bad Brains, Black Flag, Bad Religion, The Misfits and The Dead Kennedys, and if thats not enough today there is Anti-Flag,Against Me!, and Time Again to name a few. Now you may say some of these bands arent even punk but hey who are you to define what is and isnt punk? Its all opinion anyways so it doesnt really matter

Hillary K! | 2/13/2008, 11:24 pm EST

Ever Heard of The Beatles,The Doors,CCR,The Byrds,Janis Joplin,John Lennon,The Kinks and Queen? SK is not punk.Lets make it clear nobody is punk anymore.
Punk has been dead since MTV been on.My mom lived when “REAL PUNK” was alive. That was in the 70s.

I like this little article. Whether they are or aren’t the “best…ever”, it was about time somebody gave them some credit and gave them the attention they deserved. They were a solid band from start to finish and even if you disagree, every hard working band with integrity and a whole bunch of good, hell great, music deserves to be called the best ever at least once. Oh, and this message is not for the green day and mcr people. I’ve given up on you and hope you can all grow up out of that high school mindset someday. Unless you were joking. Then please shut up cuz that joke got old way before you even thought to post it.
Love,
some sleepless lady

A Drity Rotten Imbecile | 3/17/2007, 6:28 am EST

S-K WAS THE BEST AMERICAN PUNK BAND BUT THE RAMONES IS THE GREAT PUNK N ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD, THEY ARE PLAYING THEIR MUSIC WITH THEIR SOUL (although with 3-4 chords) NOT WITH THEIR STYLE. THE RAMONES NOT ONLY THE GREAT PUNK N ROLL BAND BUT THEY’RE THE WORLD HEROES

momin | 10/29/2006, 7:05 pm EST

are you people stupid what about
greenday there the best rock band ever they have over 100 million fans and there album american idiot is the best

mattycarr | 10/3/2006, 10:16 pm EST

The reason Sleater-Kinney are the best American punk band (and in my opinion, the best band of the past twenty years in terms of consistency and growth) is because people who don’t like punk still love them. They will be sorely missed…
1. A Real Man
2. Let’s Call It Love
3. Sympathy
4. The End of You
5. Get Up
6. God Is A Number
7. Dig Me Out
8. The Size of Our Love
9. Dance Song ‘97
10. Light Rail Coyote

Thankyou Sleater-Kinney.

Julio Urteaga | 8/19/2006, 5:41 pm EST

Sleater Kinney better than Ramones?….no way. Don’t get me wrong, Sleater Kinney are great but there are not even on any serious “10 best punk groups list”……and better than Ramones?,,,,pleassse we are talking about The Bruddahs aren’t we?……The Ramones are simply the best rock n’ roll group of all time.

No one compares | 8/8/2006, 10:11 pm EST

Greatest punk band ever. And, until their break-up, one of the best rock bands of today.

I read an article by AP’s music critic where he listened to every Top 40 song on iTunes and found not much to rock too. Maybe Sleater-Kinney will be the Stooges for the next generation — the band that inspires kids to pick up guitars and start playing rock again.

Eye of the beholder | 7/31/2006, 11:40 am EST

Anyone who says any band is the “best ever” is just looking for attention and feedback. S-K were a good band that never really excited me — I thought they were a more than a bit derivative, like the earlier poster — but the author thought they were the greatest and totally non-derivative. Good for him. Makes the world go round and all that.

this is really happening | 7/30/2006, 8:42 pm EST

i hate when people toss around “best” or “top ten” blah blah blah. means nothing. they were a GREAT band and they chcnged my life. eveything else is ass. here are some songs by them that i love….

Youth Decay - All Hands On The Bad One
Jumpers - The Woods
Call The Doctor - Call The Doctor
Little Mouth - Call The Doctor

Be Yr Mama - S-K
The Last Song - S-K
A Quarter to Three - Hot Rock

dOoFs | 7/29/2006, 7:00 am EST

Sleater-Kinney Greatest American Punk Band Ever!!ummmm,… i think Not sorry but there not the best ever please not even top 5 or ten!

Dagomo | 7/18/2006, 6:41 pm EST

The first time I heard a song by S-K (I think it was Get Up) I could barely listen to it without wincing. I really didn’t get it. Then came One Beat and I couldn’t get them out of my mind, they grew on me faster than any other band has! S-K rocks, they’ll be missed!
Top ten (in no order):
1)Light-Rail Coyote
2)The Fox
3)Ironclad
4)Let’s Call it Love
5)Words and Guitar
6)Rollercoaster
7)Fun eral Song
8)Modern Girl
9)Call the Doctor (Live)
10)Jenny/Steep Air

Sam | 7/18/2006, 9:27 am EST

Wow, I’m glad somebody is finally paying them tribute. They deserve it all. But I am a little confused by some of your choices. Where is One Beat?? That in my opinion is their best album, so it’s shocking it’s not on the list at all. Plus only one song from the Hot Rock, which I think would be #2.
Best Songs Missed:
“Far Away”- One Beat
“One Beat”- One Beat
“Light Rail Coyote”-One Beat
“Banned From The End Of The World”- The Hot Rock
“The Drama You’ve Been Craving”-Dig Me Out
“Turn It On”-Dig Me Out
“Youth Decay”-All Hands On The Bad One
“Was It A Lie?”-All Hands On The Bad One
“The Fox”-The Woods

God bless Sleater-Kinney

joel | 7/16/2006, 11:37 am EST

s-k lick ass, kids are going to be saying ramones who.

Paul | 7/14/2006, 9:39 pm EST

Only 30 posts on this thread? What a shame. S-K, hopefully someday you’ll get all the praise and adulation you deserve. Major props to Sheffield for calling them the best. Not just the best American punk band ever, but the most consistent rock band ever, American or British. Not one dud in their catalogue. Skip downloading those 10 songs and just get all the albums. You won’t be disappointed.

d | 7/14/2006, 2:37 am EST

aswell i heard of corin + carrie early on w/heavens to betsy + excuse 17
lists of s-k songs?
i dunno was happy to see them 3 x’s thou
in 95′ or 96′ at the cooler in ny did s/t 10″ + call the doctor stuff (that was 1 of the best shows i ever witnessed + for i think $8, these bands also played-incredible force of junior, 764-hero, cold cold hearts, modest mouse, + unwound who played last) a free show at central park w/guided by voices (dig me out was new), and finally the day after my birthday when the hot rock was coming out at the troubadour. also saw cadallaca + quasi once each which was cool. but always wanted to see s-k again over the years when they toured w/the next 3 records.
was suprised to hear about the breakup but not sad about it
sleater-kinney (:

Ian H | 7/13/2006, 2:54 pm EST

Sleater-Kinney is a good band, I must have missed that.

Val3 | 7/10/2006, 12:42 pm EST

Sleater-Kinney was the best. Thoes who don’t get it, don’t need to.

GoDrex | 7/1/2006, 3:19 pm EST

S-K is a great live band - see them while there’s still a chance.

Mike | 6/30/2006, 11:28 pm EST

I’ve heard of all of those bands (and I own all of Pavement’s albums actually). Sleater-Kinney is better. Better songwriting, better singing, better guitars, better drumming, had more to say and were better at saying it. Even Pavement, whom I love, never made an album with as much to say as Sleater-Kinney’s best albums. The Ramones were very catchy and had some heart, but what else? The New York Dolls were dumb junkies whose only real contribution to rock is inspiring the likes of Guns N Roses and Poison. Real punk rock! X and the Dead Kennedys were important, but the simple truth is that they failed to evolve enough to truly rival a band like S-K musically. By the way, you failed to mention the only American punk band who could truly give S-K a run for their money, and that is Sonic Youth. You could make a case for them, but I think a band that bleeds all over every track is a lot more punk and rock than one that prefers to remain aloof and cloak themselves in abstraction.

Rob Sheffield is an idiot | 6/30/2006, 6:26 pm EST

SK the best American punk band? What, trying to appeal to the female demographic or just spouting nonsense to be “controverial?” Please. Ever heard of X (a band that this rag declared the best American band - punk or otherwise - for years)? How ’bout Dead Kennedys? Ramones? Pavement? New York Dolls? Maybe if you’re comparing SK to modern MTV “punk,” like Greenday or Blink 182 (if punk is what you want to call that garbage), but please don’t compare SK to the greats. You embarrass them and you embarrass yourself.

mike the paperboy | 6/30/2006, 4:55 pm EST

they live on ksym.org every saturday night into sunday

bobby badboy | 6/30/2006, 2:38 pm EST

Never sounded like anyone else? Are you kidding? Sonic Youth guitars and Poly Styrene vocals from one of the most contrived, affected, by-the-numbers (post)-punk bands ever. Never mind offending the Ramones - what about Mission of Burma, X, Germs, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Stooges, Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo, MC5, Husker du, Meat Puppets, The Minutemen? And the lyrics? “I love my baby,I’m so happy” and all that naive ironic nonsense about making yourself happy by shopping - taking shots at targets that stopped moving 50 years ago - makes Zappa sound subtle by comparison.

I wonder how many people claiming this band as the greatest whatever of whenever have any records older than the first GreenDay album…

Chula | 6/30/2006, 2:17 pm EST

Sleater-Kinney, you will be missed. But here’s another take on a list of their “punk” songs:

10- Little Mouth
9-I’m Not Waiting
8-Not What You Want
7-You’re No Rockn’Roll Fun
6-Ballad of a Ladyman
5-On the Day You Went Away
4-Big Big Lights (b-side)
3-Anonymous
2-The Fox
1-I Wanna Be Yr Joey Ramone

Of course they were the best. They didn’t need a bass player, and while all of their work is great, they managed to make three masterpieces (some allegedly great bands never even make one). The Hot Rock, One Beat, and the Woods are three of the greatest rock albums ever made, and the Woods is one of the five best of all time.

Geo | 6/30/2006, 12:38 pm EST

That is just some people’s opinion such as mine. To you they might not have been the best punk band but to me they were and are THE best band.

I love you S-K and wish you all the best

Good, but not the best | 6/30/2006, 9:11 am EST

Sure, they had some good songs. But…the best punk band ever? Not even close. Not even going back five years. They didn’t even have a bass player, the silly girls.

Sandee | 6/30/2006, 3:47 am EST

How can there be NOTHING on there from One Beat? ‘Light Rail Coyote’ is one of my favorite songs of all TIME. Also, ‘The Fox’ makes me want to make things happen. I wish there were explanations for the choices!

I will miss this band so much. Love you, Janet, Corin and Carrie. LOVE YOU. You made me want to be myself.

Jeff | 6/30/2006, 1:35 am EST

It has only been about a year since I first added “The Woods” to my music collection and started listening to Sleater-Kinney. I have to say that at first, I found it difficult to listen. As time went on, however, the music grew on me like few other bands have. They most definitely are the greatest American punk band ever, and will hopefully achieve their place in the sun in rock and roll history. Needless to say, I will be seeing them play their *final* show in Portland on August 11th. Goodbye Carrie, Corin, and Janet, you ladies stole my heart. Everything you have done is brilliant, and this is all too soon. Thank you.

Bob Kachnycz | 6/29/2006, 11:23 pm EST

Such a wonderful band, best band I’ve ever seen, from the Velvet Underground on. I was lucky enough to hear them from Excuse 17’s first tape and H2B’s too, and to see them from 97 on. The high point for me was Hot Rock, and then another high point with One Beat. The Woods was terrible, and a sign that this was in the cards. I will miss them so, I love them so.

Aaron55540 | 6/29/2006, 7:06 pm EST

Disheartening does not even come close to how I feel…having just found SK (with the help of RS-I owe you many Xmas cards!), I was looking forward to more great music from them in the future. Based on how their music had grown and expanded from album to album, I was expecting-quite possibly-one of the greatest albums ever made. SK you will be sadly missed….

Xavier-D. | 6/29/2006, 6:49 pm EST

Sleater-Kinney isn’t just the best American “punk band” ever. They are also the best American ROCK band of the last 10 years. Saddest of all, they’re closing shop after last year’s “The Woods” which is w/o question one of the top 5 albums of new millenium. Thanx Rob S. for the shout-out to an amazing band who we will sorely miss. However, you’re Top 10 S-K song list really does leave something to be desired. Try this list instead:(in chronological order):
“Good Things,” 1996
“Buy Her Candy,” 1997
“One More Hour” (I’ll concede this one, Rob), 1997
“Hot Rock” (title track), 1997
“The Swimmer,” 2001
“Light-Rail Coyote,” 2003
“Sympathy,” 2003
“What’s Yours Is Mine,” 2005
“Let’s Call It Love,” 2005
and # 10… Well, I gotta cheat,
3-way tie: “One Beat,” “Rollercoaster,” “Stay Where You Are” :)

Thank you Carrie, Corin, and Janet. We love you.

Younonamouse | 6/29/2006, 6:36 pm EST

Jesus Lizard = good
Sleater-Kinney = great
safe to say mackb “doesn’t get it”. his loss.

Killa | 6/29/2006, 1:44 pm EST

Sleater who? Best American punk band- Anybody ever heard of The Jesus Lizard?

ay | 6/29/2006, 10:27 am EST

this is a sad day for music, and the worst birthday ever!!
SK for R+R hall of fame 2020

Anonymous | 6/29/2006, 9:29 am EST

With a title like that, this is making news. I’ve been a huge fan and I enjoyed seeing them take a more raw direction in The Woods. I hope this “indefinate hiatus” doesn’t last too long. I refuse to believe they are gone!

mackb | 6/28/2006, 11:23 pm EST

You’re kidding, right? I’ve now finally listened, and I must say I think they’re unlistenable. Toneless, monochromatic, loud without a point; what exactly is it that’s so appealing?

PastyJournalist | 6/28/2006, 11:05 pm EST

I was lucky enough to see them live during their ‘Woods’ tour. Absolutely amazing live - and Rob is right - not a weak album in 13 years. While it is a shock - damn, few bands in memory have left at the top of their game.

John Bradley | 6/28/2006, 9:17 pm EST

Thank you RS for this article. Sleater-Kinney truly was the greatest American punk band of all time and it shows real critical knowledge to be this familiar with their music. Kudos to Rob and of course to the SK gang.

russ | 6/28/2006, 6:56 pm EST

i will sorely miss this band’s shows and recordings. to go out on “the woods” ain’t at all shameful…it’s an amazing recording…they are leaving at the peak of their game.
of course, if they want to come back and put out something half as good, I wouldn’t mind one bit.

joão | 6/28/2006, 5:36 pm EST

I’m 37. I’ve listenned to a lot of bands for more than 25 years. Comes a time it gets more difficult to find a new band that really excites you, that could rival with your all-time favourite bands. I came across S-K just last year and immediately became a fan. So it is with sadness that I read the news. S-K were the best band around and they leave at the top of their game. The Woods is an excellet album and Entertain is a masterpiece of power and dynamics and, yes, interpretation - comparable only to The Who’s My Generation. I still hope they’ll come back sooner than later. We’ll be waiting.

TD | 6/28/2006, 5:15 pm EST

What a bummer! I was hoping to be able to see them again. i saw them once back in July of ‘99. Despite the hot sun, they let the music do the talking and left a big impression. Thank you for the music.

bob | 6/28/2006, 3:46 pm EST

S-K was the greatest punk - no rock - band ever!
What makes this so sad is that they just came off not only their best record (”the woods”) but one the greatest records ever. Period.
I still get chills everytime I listen to it. I’ve been listening to the Woods non stop since it came out and it still blows me away. Over the years I’ve bought all the side projects but nothing was ever as magical as S-K.

sad panda | 6/28/2006, 3:24 pm EST

no more SK? a massive void now exists in the realm of quality music. who will fill it? sadly, no one will. bye girls. thank you and God Bless!!!
