Monday News: Fiona Apple, Charles Smith, Kevin Richardson, Aerosmith, Art Brut

6/26/06, 9:27 am EST

  • Even bad bad girls get sick of themselves after a while. Fiona Apple has apparently decided to (temporarily) lose the whole depressed ingĂ©nue thing and bring on the funny in a new duet with comedian Zach Galifianakis called Come On And Get It (Up In ‘Dem Guts). [from PerezHilton]
  • Charles Smith, guitarist for soul/funk/disco/R&B (depending on which stage of their career you’re talking about) group Kool & the Gang died last week.
  • Don’t panic, but Kevin Richardson (from the Backstreet Boys, duh) has quit the band so that he can “move on with the next chapter of [his] life”. If you’re 33 and still part of a self-described boy band we think that whole adulthood train may have left the station already. But best of luck, Kev.
  • Starting tomorrow Tower Records will offer its own downloadable music service, Tower.com/Digital. Why will Tower’s 99-cent song be different from all other 99-cent songs? Something called a “higher bitrate” that provides better “audio fidelity.”
  • In discussing Aerosmith’s new record (which the band is currently working on and expects to release in the spring of 2007) guitarist Joe Perry likens Aerosmith to a hammer. We love it when the rock stars do all the work for us.
  • The kids want British humorists (and sometimes rockers) Art Brut to play the last ever Top of the Pops broadcast. The band’s music is filled with references to the legendary show. Sign the petition here. [from Drowned in Sound]
