Australia’s Grates have a spastic spitfire of a lead singer in Patience Hodgson: Her bawdy, girlish onstage humor and melodic screech have drawn comparisons to Karen O. But the Grates debut is cuter and more playful than anything by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The precocious “19 20 20” opens with the adorably demented lyrics “my baby’s off yeah he’s shooting tigers, my baby he’s such a fuckin’ liar”; on “Trampoline” Hodgson showcases her weird indie-girl sex appeal, moaning “use your car like a hot machine, just for fun if you know what I mean”. Wink wink. Gravity Won’t Get You High is out August 29th.
