Back in 1989 when Trent Reznor first screamed “I’d rather die than give you control” during Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole” we never imagined: A.) We’d be watching him perform the song 17 years later and not feel embarrassed or B.) we’d be watching him perform it, not feeling embarrassed, and find ourselves happily eating a pretzel at an alcohol-free, sea-side venue. But that’s what happened on Saturday night. During the Jones Beach date on Nine Inch Nails’ current tour (with Bauhaus and Peaches as openers) Trent, who is all buffed-out like a goth rock Rambo, played an set filled with excellent old stuff (“Suck”) and new stuff (“Only”) plus a few covers (Joy Division’s “Dead Souls” and Queen’s “Get Down Make Love”). Reznor alluded to the rough time he’s had over the past few years: “Five years ago I was at the worst place I’d ever been in my life, I was almost dead and I wanted to be dead” Reznor spoke to a hushed crowd, “and to think that I could get a great band together of good friends and come and play here for you, it means the world to me.”
