Rolling Stone flooded the zone at this year’s Bonnaroo, in Manchester, Tennessee this past weekend. The general report from our army of operatives: 2006 was the festival’s best year yet. Radiohead’s headlining appearance on Saturday night more than made up for their weirdly uninspired New York sets earlier last week. In contrast to the their Madison Square Garden set lists, which focuses on Kid A-era stuff and new songs, the band performed arena classics like “The Bends,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Karma Police” plus just the right number of new tunes like “Steps” and “Bodysnatchers.” Other hot performances of the weekend included Bright Eyes who drew a huge crowd and invited several guests onstage, including members of My Morning Jacket and the Super Furry Animals. By far the weirdest “wow that was awesome” moments came during Ben Folds’ set. We didn’t think that we cared about the Nineties piano-popster anymore, but after seeing Folds’ set we can see why the Streets’ Mike Skinner told RS that Ben Folds is the Bonnaroo artist with whom he’d most like to collaborate. Folds behaved like a bona fide rock star, pounding the piano, hurling his stool around during songs like “One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces” and leading the crowd in three-part harmonies during “Not the Same.” After his set he told Rolling Stone he was “surprised at the number of people who didn’t mind singing” and commented that they were “really in tune”. Bonnaroo-goers: Let’s hear about your own highlights (or lowlights).
