Staff Report: Best Bonnaroo Ever!

6/19/06, 3:13 pm EST

Rolling Stone flooded the zone at this year’s Bonnaroo, in Manchester, Tennessee this past weekend. The general report from our army of operatives: 2006 was the festival’s best year yet. Radiohead’s headlining appearance on Saturday night more than made up for their weirdly uninspired New York sets earlier last week. In contrast to the their Madison Square Garden set lists, which focuses on Kid A-era stuff and new songs, the band performed arena classics like “The Bends,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Karma Police” plus just the right number of new tunes like “Steps” and “Bodysnatchers.” Other hot performances of the weekend included Bright Eyes who drew a huge crowd and invited several guests onstage, including members of My Morning Jacket and the Super Furry Animals. By far the weirdest “wow that was awesome” moments came during Ben Folds’ set. We didn’t think that we cared about the Nineties piano-popster anymore, but after seeing Folds’ set we can see why the Streets’ Mike Skinner told RS that Ben Folds is the Bonnaroo artist with whom he’d most like to collaborate. Folds behaved like a bona fide rock star, pounding the piano, hurling his stool around during songs like “One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces” and leading the crowd in three-part harmonies during “Not the Same.” After his set he told Rolling Stone he was “surprised at the number of people who didn’t mind singing” and commented that they were “really in tune”. Bonnaroo-goers: Let’s hear about your own highlights (or lowlights).

‘Roo 2006 was otherworldly. I will not comment on the music because the press has done a thorough job with that. It was the atmosphere, man, that made it the best ever. Imagine a world where anything is possible as long as it doesn’t hurt another, and noone is critical. That is how 80,000 of us lived for three days. Kudos to the promoters for making it happen and Manchester TN for letting it happen.

It was my first Bonnaroo and definately one of the times of my life. I can see why people call it the woodstock of our generation. My highlights:
-Bright eyes, gillian welch, and
david rawlings playing “lua” (and the rest of his set).
-My morning jacket. period. especially “it makes no difference” by the band
-upright citizen’s brigade. favorite quote-”this is the first time that baby’s heard the word cocksucker.”
-and complete silence from a crowd of 80,000 people during “exit music for a film” in radiohead’s set

Im sorry to come down on anyone who had a great time at bonnaroo but anyone who has been there the past years, the first one particularly will tell you that bonnaroo is a huge dissapointment. Festivals like there were meant for real jam bands and chill people, and it seems to me and many other past Roo fans that this was anything but that… its sad to see. Sorry about being a buzz kill but this was definitely more like the last woodstock… a complete sell out in a bad way

An aboslutely land-mark experience.
Yes, MMJ KILLED it for 3+ hours. Yes, Oysterhead sent 60,000+ into a frenzy. And yes, Devendra Banhart left thousnads asking, “Why have I never heard of that guy?” But most importantly, with our culture and nation in a bit of an identity crisis, it was monumental that Radiohead arrived in Middle America’s heart of the Red States to captivate a crowd with a message categorically opposing the views and actions of our government and misinformed masses. During “You and Whose Army”, Thom Yorke sat at piano with his back to us and a camera facing him. He sat with one eye directly in the camera lens as he sang the title of the song, then leaned away from the lens to reveal an army of youth 80,000 strong. Sending a message ringing true from Across the Pond, to Woodstock and Tennesse. The young are an army of change. Radiohead’s army…

it seriously doesnt get any better. bright eyes. i mean i dont have to say anything about them. especially with the collaborations they had on stage. GO to Bonnaroo, its cajun for “a really good time”, and those cajuns know what their talking about.

I had a kick ass time at Bonnaroo 2006. I had gone the year before and I think this year beat lasts. Maybe it was all the mind altering drugs I was on but honestly the music couldent have been better. I will have to say though that this years (2006) it seemed that there were many “virgins” to Bonnaroo which made it a lil different but easy to cope with if you were in your own zone or world. All in all Bonnaroo impresses me every year and I will be back depending on the lineup! Cheers!

Ooooh to add to my comment.. I never saw BF5 or any other lame-o band like that. Bonnaroo is about “Jam” bands so I was all about Oysterhead, Trey, Mike and the Duo, Umphreys and Phil Lesh. It’s kool to go see new bands you have never seen before but how could you pass those up?? I know my body wouldent let me! :)

It was a good bonnaroo but def not the best. The best roo in my opinion was 2004. That one just flat out blew my mind. Bonnaroo 06 was def my last bonnaroo. It is getting to be too much. Don’t get me wrong there were some great highlights but I helped it make my mind up about ending my 5 year stint trecking to the Roo. Unless once artist lineup goes up and blows my mind again like last year.
