Perry Farrell Doesn’t Care What You Think of Nuno Bettencourt

6/12/06, 12:43 am EST

We have a new favorite word here in the RS offices: Nuno. That’s right: Nuno, as in Nuno Bettencourt, former guitarist of Extreme — the extremely uncool Nineties pop-metal band best known for the ballad “More Than Words”. These days, our man Nuno has a new gig: He’s playing in Satellite Party, the latest band formed by Perry Farrell, which just signed with Columbia Records and will perform at Lollapalooza in August. The Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins told me a while back that Farrell had no idea who Nuno was when he hired him: “I guess everybody was giving Perry shit about it and he didn’t really know. He’s like, ‘I don’t know, man, I met this guy at this party and I got along with him. We’re writing some songs.’ So like, Flea and everybody are just going, ‘You dork, why are you hanging out with that guy?’ I love that Perry is so not on the same planet as everybody. He just missed that completely.” We love that too. A lot.

Did the writer of this article have a personal beef with Nuno or is he just clueless? Perry Farrell is cartoonish - and Brian Hiatt says Nuno is uncool? On what planet? I never much read Rolling Stone but in the grocery store check out lane; I will forever remember this uneducated, disrespectful article as associated with your magazine. Even if you don’t care for the type of music Nuno plays, you could never have listened to his work and said he was uncool.

gypsymutha | 3/25/2009, 9:09 am EST

Nuno is and always will be an extraordinary ARTIST,not just a great guitarist. I loved Extreme from the first time I heard them and I STILL love’em to this day!!
“…someone said “Give peace a chance”…………

GinaD | 2/4/2009, 3:50 pm EST

I agree. Etty would be nothing without Perry. The only reason her
name is even spoken is because she’s the wife of the singer of Jane’s Addiction.

no name | 2/2/2009, 6:21 pm EST

i LOVE, LOVE perry, but felt like this needed to be said. didn’t want to post this at xiola or
perryfarrell.net,(they just don’t understand.) perry farrell is
a beautiful, sexy, gorgeous and beyond talented musician, and i will trust in his judgements no matter what. BUT, does anyone else think he’s really, really changed in the past 20 years? it just seems like he puts too much focus on his wife like she’s such a big star, where as in the past the focus was all on him, like it should be. who really wants to look at her dancing around anyway? i’d rather see perry dancing. i mean, i like etty and all, she’s a nice person and i think she’s good to perry, but i want to see HIM shine, not HER. so what if she’s a great dancer, i don’t really care!

real fans from back in the day want to see PERRY, not PERRY’S WIFE.

sorry pear, i love you, but… as i recently read in a magazine about how hollywood changes people, i will quote,

“perry said he would never give in to the media, do endorsements, change because the media wanted him too, but he has, and perry,

“IT’S AN UGLY THING,
WHAT FAME HAS DONE TO YOU.”"

Jessi | 11/17/2008, 12:13 pm EST

NUNO is God!

‘Extreme’ is better than the most other new bands around now. Better than ‘Strokes’ and ‘Coldplay’ you can’t compare them to a Guitarplayer like Nuno’s range.

The are like kids playing…Nuno has to show them how to play…

He has more talent than those whole groups….and with Gary Cherone he is in one of the greatest Bands of the World and i can’t stand those new Bands saying they are great makes me sick.

Michelle | 11/11/2008, 8:12 pm EST

also….so what if Nuno was in metal “hair” band…he has beautiful hair!!!!!

Michelle | 10/22/2008, 11:22 pm EST

Nuno is indeed brilliant…go listen, I mean really LISTEN to any and all of his musical endeavors, of course his killer licks, but also the writing, the musical and backround vocal arrangements, all the nuances that go into an actual song, he is a true artist….last but not least, one of the most beutiful men, no, THE most beautiful..ever made…sorry Suze dear, someday I hope to get the chance to plant a big wet juicy one on those luscious lips of his…..though yourself sexy, talented and a Free fan…in itself AWESOME…sometimes you gotta share girlfriend…..luv u Nuno….you make the world brighter…..

anonymous | 5/5/2008, 10:26 pm EST

Perry’s wife is the biggest metal fan there is. He absolutely knew who Nuno was when they met. His wife was standing right there and she was gushing about how amazing he is. Perry tries so hard to be cool. NUno just is!

Anonymous | 4/5/2008, 3:01 pm EST

As someone who has seen Extreme live more than a couple of times, I can say that Nuno is without a doubt one of the most talented musicians on the planet. He can effortlessly do things with a guitar that most other guitarists can’t even comprehend, much less play. He is up there with John Petrucci in the upper-eschelon of progressive metal guitarists.

If the writers of this magazine spent half the time exploring actual musicianship as they did writing about pop culture, maybe they’d recognize that. If I’m looking for a popularity contest, I’ll watch American Idol.

LongtimeNunofan | 2/21/2008, 8:40 pm EST

I completely agree. Nuno is one of the most downplayed yet incredible guitarists ever.

Live or recorded, Not too many people can pull off what he does, effortlessly.

J Phils. | 2/3/2008, 11:30 pm EST

Nuno Bettencourt is a guitar god. Perry should feel lucky he hooked himself up (for a bit) with a GREAT musician/producer like Nuno.

Perry and whoever wrote this artice, YOU SUCK. The only guy who made Jane’s Addiction look and sound cool was Dave Navarro and no one else.

Pete | 2/1/2008, 12:28 pm EST

saw these live, Nuno was awesome, he owned the stage. RS are retarded to even think about slagging off Nuno. The fantastic 4 are Hank Marvin, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen and Nuno Bettencourt!

the digital dinosaur | 12/31/2007, 9:00 pm EST

As the archetype of Critical & Political Correctness, Rolling Stone is the world’s most expensive toilet paper! As great a bass player as Flea is, Nuno is a MASTER of his instrument (and probably a better bassist than Flea). The positioning of Flea’s head is probably the reason for his propensity for performing with his buttocks exposed - it’s the only way he can breathe. BTW, even “More Than Words” is a great song - it’s just that it’s an acoustic ballad…GET OVER IT!!!!
Viva Extreme!

the digital dinosaur | 12/31/2007, 8:53 pm EST

I canceled my subscription to Rolling Stone over 15 years ago because of this kind of “Critical Correctness”. Even though I was getting it at an incredible discount, it’s still the world’s most expensive toilet paper. As great a bass player as Flea is, Nuno is a MASTER of his instrument (and probably a better bassist than Flea). LA Musician | 12/5/2007, 10:44 pm EST

Please this is rolling stone magazine, someone should fire this disrespectful clown.

The Frase | 12/4/2007, 5:28 pm EST

Way to go, you have just slated a guy with more talent in his little finger than most guitarists out there. I imagine you have probably listened to More Than Words and a couple of Extremes singles, and not even heard any of Bettencourts other solo stuff.
Forget the comment on Perry, it’s not him quoted, and I imagine words are being put into his mouth. They are pros, not amateurs like you who are proud to highlight that you have decided Nuno is now your favourite word in the office.
Grow up and get educated you rookies.

Anonymous | 11/27/2007, 4:31 am EST

This is one of the most dickish pieces I’ve ever read here. Lemme get this straight: Perry wouldn’t have hired Nuno - one of the best guitarists on the planet - because he wasn’t *hip enough*? Gimme a break - Perry’s lucky he’s got Nuno working with him!

The writer or this “piece” needs to take his smirking hipster snobbism and cram it right up his own ass.

Anonymous | 11/27/2007, 4:22 am EST

You guys are assholes. Nuno’s one of the most talented (yet criminally underrated) guitarists to emerge in the post-Van Halen era. Stop ragging on him (and giggling about “More Than Words”) and maybe go actually *listen* to an Extreme album. Try “Extreme III”…good stuff.

the Zigster | 7/29/2007, 2:45 am EST

F**k More Than Words! People need to not apply that song to them and label them and Nuno.

Go listen to Extreme, Extreme 2: Pornograffitti, III Sides To Every Story and Waiting For The Punchline, edit out MTWS. Great melodic rock band in line with Queen/Van Halen/Red Hot Chilli Peppers that I hope makes another record now that Nuno has left Sattellite Party.

Go and buy all 4 of these albums online if you don’t own them.

Okay, this is coming from a magazine who pictured John Mayer on the cover and said he’s one of the new guitar gods. If you want to put a guitar god on your cover, Nuno’s your man (though he’s way to modest to say so). Nuno is amazing not only as a guitarist, but as a musician. He’s phenomenally gifted. He can do ANYTHING and he’s proven that time and time again. It’s no surprise that Perry would want to work with him. Listen to anything he’s done (post-Extreme if you don’t like Extreme). He’s incredible. He’s also humble, kind, generous, down to earth and funny. I saw Satellite Party at Lollapalooza in 2005 and it was great then while it was still new and in the experimental stages. It’s gonna blow everyone away this year. I know it and I can’t wait! So quit slagging on Nuno. He deserves better than your condemnation and disrespect.

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:12 am EST

dude lay of the juice…too many little pink pills for you my friend. nuno’s a legend in his own right? this is just an invitation for u to loose subscribers and readers to RS. Cos you just lost one mate!

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:10 am EST

unlike other musicians-ie-taylor hawkins. nuno doesnt need to talk smack about fellow muso’s because he’s a humble guy and lets face it his music does the talking. nuno wins hands down. enough said.

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:06 am EST

its fact that nuno was one of the fundamental reasons the new album sounds the way it does. it was a dance track before nuno got his hot fingers on it…HE knows his music. wow RS are really scrapping the barrell for new journo’s…

Anonymous | 6/25/2007, 5:01 am EST

man what are you on? lay of the juice…nuno happens to be one of the most talented, modest, humble musicians out. just because taylor hawkins is a dick and has to talk smack about other muso’s-doesn’t mean they all have to be dicks. The only reason why they say shit like that is because they’re threatened by nuno’s talent. for shits sake-people are gona recognise nuno bettencourt’s name and talent way before Taylor Hawkins

perryflovesnuno | 6/2/2007, 2:45 pm EST

Not only has Nuno played alongside some of the finest talent on the planet, he’s written songs for some of the finest.

Internationally, he’s one of the top 10 writers, producers and arrangers of music. PERIOD.

The FACT that he can add the most INCREDIBLE guitar solo to whichever track (I have a feeling he’ll only shred once for you!!!!! and make his shred MORE INTERESTING than anything Varney’s stable EVER put out, including Vai, makes him one of the best musicians on the planet.

He’s playing with Perry because Perry don’t care what FLEA or anybody else says.

Perry Farrell is a GENIOUS miles beyond FLEA or anybody else in RHCP……he invented the tour they headlined SECOND year. I was there for JA at first Lollapalooza. Jane’s with Dave was an awesome spectacle, as were Living Color, Sioxie, and ICE T. Not into Rollins so much, but so what? I had plenty of stands to go visit!!!!!

Nuno is a GOD of musicianship in general.

Dan | 5/5/2007, 2:37 am EST

Man why do people call extreme hair metal or pop metal they may have looked like it but so did everyone else at that period. Extreme were a genre bending band incorporating funk, classical, folk, metal into there exciting brand of rock n’ roll. Just listen to III sides to every story an unsung conceptual masterpiece of the early 90’s which sadly got lost amongst the crap of pearl jam and other corporate grunge. Don’t judge a band on image or one song alone that is the biggest mistake one can make.

Oigres33 | 4/24/2007, 8:20 am EST

Nuno has always been great, and I must confess that, despite I used to wait for the guitar solo in every song from extreme, now I love every single beat of it.

God save Nuno!

Dave | 3/20/2007, 5:55 pm EST

Nuno is the bomb alright, when I see comments like these I know they’ve never heard three sides to every story… the guys got chops within chops within riffs within chops. If i was in a guitar fight and wanted a guy than can play and emote just about anything I’d take Nuno first, screw you Eric Clapton, Nuno’s the guitar god.

Ale | 3/17/2007, 7:59 pm EST

If i wrote a note in a magazine at least i got to know what i’m talking about, that’s where you’re wrong mr. Brian Hiatt. If you were listening all of Nuno’s work now you quit listening britney.

Anonymous | 3/5/2007, 6:33 pm EST

Hawkins. He’s “the coolest”.
Sometimes it seems like he thinks he is THE STAR in Foo Fighters.
Nir.. what?
Yeah, nice skills, but no thrill in his playing.
PERRY OWNS.
And the guy always works with the greatest.
Nuno is one of those.

JC | 2/2/2007, 9:36 am EST

I love the Chili Peppers, but when I hear that Flea says shit like that it really makes him look like an ass. I also see why people rank on Extreme, because a lot of their music (especially the ‘hits’) WAS cheesy, but no one can question Nuno’s talent - unbelievable.

DAN | 1/23/2007, 7:47 pm EST

ROLLING STONES MAGAZINE IS SUCH A BANDWAGON JUMPING PIECE OF CRAP PUBLICATION. I CANCELED MY SUBSCRIPTION. CMON THESE GUYS HAD A COVER W. BRITNEY SPEARS!!! THEY USED TO BE UNDERGROUND NOW THEY ARE JUST BANDWAGON JUMPING HO’S. NUNO IS COOL AND SO IS PERRY. THESE GUYS ARE GOING TO DO SOME AWESOME MUSIC TOGETHER

Casper | 1/16/2007, 10:43 pm EST

Um, Janes Addiction were muchly a hair metal band anyhows, and yes, I actually do think that Extreme’s song ‘Rest in Peace’ is a minor wonder of sorts.

Its a pity about Dave N. and those crummy game shows he works in. Couldn’t he have just got a job taking peoples tickets at concerts? That would be a cool way to see heaps of bands for free.

Oddjob | 1/12/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Nuno is awesome, simply put. Remember the lead guitar work in “Play With Me” (as featured in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure)?

Frank Johnson | 1/7/2007, 11:11 pm EST

Too often, Rolling Stone just makes safe comments. Calling Extreme “extremely uncool” is something that will make the hipsters nod. If you look at who writes for Rolling Stone, it’s mostly people with the right pedigrees. The only way someone from a midwestern university might get work at RS is if their name happens to be Sarah Lawrence.

cRAIG | 1/2/2007, 5:40 pm EST

i loved the whole 1983-91 cheez-metal period, or whatever you wanna call it. Extreme was okay at best. but Nuno solo is a different story. he’s a really good songwriter as well as an amazing guitarist, and has six records since Extreme to prove it. Nuno rules, period.

butterflyincp | 12/28/2006, 2:43 pm EST

Everyones entitled to their own opinion and it really doesnt matter! The line up of Satelite party is amazing and genious and I cant believe people focus on such frivolous stuff. Focus on the music that envelopes your soul.

Anonymous | 12/2/2006, 9:03 pm EST

Nuno Bettencourt happens to be one of the most acomplished guitarists around. If having hair and playing in Extreme makes him a dork then wearing a sock on your dick makes you an ass.

Michael | 11/19/2006, 2:37 pm EST

Wow i didn’t know so many more people loved nuno’s music, cool!!

NUNO ROCKS!

rachal | 10/31/2006, 1:04 pm EST

i love nuno and always have

Zsu | 10/22/2006, 12:00 pm EST

Okay, to everybody who doesn’t know Nuno’s music: Just listen! and then judge!
Extreme forever!!! Anyway:)

Anonymous | 10/14/2006, 1:24 pm EST

Nuno is a genius

DOGMAN | 8/3/2006, 1:23 pm EST

This probably goes back to Nuno slagging the RHCP some time ago. Anyone who knows about Nuno knows the guy is pure musical genius. Everything he has done, Extreme included, has been great.

jorge | 7/25/2006, 11:08 am EST

instead of “extremely uncool” they shouldve said extremely misunderstood, nuno rules, its cool that nuno and flea are playing together, must be sick live

jorge | 7/25/2006, 10:19 am EST

instead of extremely uncool it shouldve said extremely misunderstood

tessa backstreet | 7/9/2006, 7:32 pm EST

i love you perry, no matter what, i just love you so much perr. nobody ever ever say anything bad about perry because he is so beautiful. i will follow wherever he goes or who he plays with. i love perry.

Scott | 7/8/2006, 2:04 pm EST

Nuno is an amazing guitarist… anyone who says he’s “uncool” just because he’s wrongly associated with 80’s/90’s hair metal is an uninformed idiot.

Scott

genpk | 7/4/2006, 7:33 am EST

Oh by the way, is that why Flea wanted to play with Nuno on Perry’s new album !!!!!

genpk | 7/4/2006, 7:29 am EST

thats why Steve VAI and Billy SHEEHAN rocked up to see him play at the House of Blues,Anaheim in January.Yeh, no one knows Nuno -right!!!

RHCPfan | 6/29/2006, 10:43 pm EST

Go and download Hip Today, Rest In Peace, Get The Funk Out by Extreme and tell me that s**t is uncool.

RHCPfan | 6/29/2006, 10:41 pm EST

OMG, they are so lucky to have Nuno as their f**kin guitar player. Go listen to all the Extreme albums, all the stuff that he has done. No need to bash the guy RS or anybody, he is incredible.

RV | 6/26/2006, 3:32 am EST

Hah, Nuno has more talent in his little finger than all of the Chilis & the Foos put together. ..& don’t tell me they weren’t heavily influenced by him either. Maybe they’re just a little scared that he’ll come back in a big way & completely overshadow all of them the way he did back in the day. Let us not also forget that Nirvana used to be Extreme’s warmup act, & that it was Nuno who was pushing the band left right & centre before anybody else had even heard of them. ..by the way Flea, has Tom Petty sued you yet?

flowpop | 6/25/2006, 12:30 pm EST

how can RS rag on nuno? he is one of the best guitarists in the world and also a really cool guy

Lee | 6/21/2006, 2:57 pm EST

Flea..You dork, don’t say you’re still bitter coz Nuno said you were in a stevie wonder covers band! C’mon, he was joking!

Why do people slag Extreme so much? They were one of the best bands out of that period, you can’t beat them up because of one song, check out III Sides or Waiting for the Punchline.
