We just got a sneak preview of his upcoming album, Modern Times, due out on August 29th. Times, which Dylan produced himself, mixes elements of 2001’s Love and Theft -– blues variations (think “Cry A While”) and whimsical ballads (think “Floater”) -– with the darker, swampier vibe of the Daniel Lanois-produced classics Time Out of Mind and Oh Mercy. Only Dylan’s current touring band plays on the new one: ringing in our ears was the bone-chilling vamp “Ain’t Talkin’”, which may be Dylan’s most powerful album-closing epic ever. Other song titles include “Thunder on the Mountain,” “Spirit on the Water,” “Workingman’s Blues,” “When the Deal Goes Down” and “Neddy Moore.” Before the release of Modern Times, Dylan will be doing another summer tour of minor league ballparks.

It’s been a long wait for new material for Dylan afficionados, but I think it will be worth it if this preview accurately depicts what we’ll be hearing. The man is a national treasure.

indeed
i can think of other of some pretty powerful album enders…ones that summed up the story with another story…
“highlands” on time out of mind
“sad eyed lady” on blonde on blonde
“ain’t talkin’” on modern times must be sweet to live up to those

Good point about the album-enders – my expectations are high for “Ain’t Talkin’”; I’m trying to keep them down so that they stay realistic. With someone of Dylan’s stature it’s easy to expect too much and maybe be confounded, but I loved the last two studio releases and the write-ups all say this new one seems to incorporate elements of both so I guess it’s legitimate to be excited.

This, “Turn Of The Century,” songwriter, muscian, produced himself, through the teachings, from his former producer, Daniel Lanos. Thank God, he had the concise to do so. THIS NEW ALBUM WILL ONCE AGAIN REWRITE HISTORY, CREATING IT’S MILESSTONE!

I need to quit my job and get a job @ Rolling Stone…that way I can hear the album as soon as possible….or better yet COLUMBIA RECORDS. Or I guess I could just keep my eyes on the newsgroups, I had L&T a week before it was officially released

can’t wait for the new cd, it sounds as if it is going to be true Dylan. I have followed Dylan’s music since I was 14, I am 54 now.

Another example of how far Rolling Stone has fallen – a new Dylan album and all we get is the above. Sounds more like a press release than an insight into the forthcoming album *yawn*

I have not yet heard the snippets that have leaked, but I don’t really want to. I want to hear this new Dylan album in all of it’s promised glory when it comes out later this month. Who knows- it might just be the first CD I actually buy this year from a major label. Maybe if he keeps making music that differs from the sound that made him popular in the sixties, people will stop comparing my music to his. Maybe not. I don’t care. He’s not the worst person to be compared to. I’m not going to say I can’t wait for the new album- but I AM waiting.
