Your Turn

The most influential and successful female pop superstar of the past decade Britney Spears is more musically adept and self-assured on In the Zone, her fourth studio release, than she's ever sounded or been to date. The Grammy-winning guilty pleasure "Toxic" is, of course, the standout moment here and best track on record; but both ballads ("Shadow" and "Everytime"), marketable and decent opening duet with Madonna, sensual club songs "Showdown" and "Breathe On Me," as well as the outrageous Hip Hop-infused "Outrageous" are all innovative pop songs like the aforementioned "Toxic." Despite an occasional low moment (significantly the bland "Early Mornin'") here and there on In the Zone, Britney Spears' trademark growl finally sounds fitting here--surprising on the ballads "Shadow" and "Everytime" Britney sounds quite brilliant as a singer. In the Zone might showcase an icon embracing herself as a powerful woman but the quieter moments here let us know she's growing up...so let's give credit where credit is due.
