"The Abyss" is "2001: A Space Odyssey", but underwater. This
underwater action-adventure epic accomplishes what few of
its predecessors have. All of the elements are emotionally
engaging and visually arresting. It has everything; romance,
suspense, action, and aliens! However, it is not without some
flaws.
The scope of "The Abyss" establishes writer-director James
Cameron as the new Steven Spielberg. The plot centers on a
group of oil drillers who are assigned to take on a rescue
mission. They start to turn on each other as they uncover not
only a political plot, but also an alien species.
The team is led by Bud Brigman, an average joe portrayed
brilliantly by Ed Harris. He brings depth and complexity to
this seemingly mediocre role. The love story between Bud and
his future ex-wife, Lindsay (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) is
very effecting.
The film is a taut thriller. Unfortunately, it takes a huge left
turn during the conclusion, when the motive of the alien
species is revealed.
With a slow beginning and a weak conclusion, "The Abyss"
suffers. However, it has a "middle" that will keep you on the
edge of your seat.
