This is a football movie, but good taste is the only thing that gets kicked around. Who would you pick to direct the true story (oh, those words!) of West Virginia's Marshall University football team, after all the players and the coaches (save one) are killed in a 1970 plane crash? Why, McG, of course, the auteur of Charlie's Angels and TV's The O.C. I gave Mr. G the benefit of the doubt until he amped up the treacle past the legal limit. Even the reliable Matthew McConaughey hams it to the hilt as the new coach, Jack Lengyel. Matthew Fox, as assistant coach Red Dawson, tries the old play that less is more. No go. Marshall deserved better than this misbegotten tribute.

Somehow for me, this movie was deeply moving. It's like I was there. And, in a way, I was. My brother was one of 3 students left in Hodges Hall dorm after the crash. He woke up Sunday morning and the players were all gone. It was a very emotional experience for me. I've watched it now 6 times.

The only reason you people actually liked this movie is because you're FROM Marshall. You're so blinded by your love for your school and history that you bought into this piece of crap movie. Look past that for what it really is: a Hollywood adaptation that is trying to tug at everyone's heart strings in order to make a buck. The person you should be made at is McG for making something that was a tragedy into complete Hollywood garbage.

Well, here goes another Native Hungtonian and Marshall Fan telling the reviewer he does not know what he is talking about. It is not JUST a football movie it is OUR STORY. Now the nation, and when it is released on DVD, the world will know this story. As the night of Nov. 14, 1970 is known as "The Crash", this movie will be known "The Movie" for us. But it has been my expierence that movies the fans think are good, the reviewers think otherwise. As others have said, according to the Herald-Dipatch, the cast and crew fell in love with the Tri-State. They wanted to do this story right. Thank you to them. WE ARE MARSHALL.

I hope nobody takes Traver's review of We Are Marshall seriously. Since he is with Rolling Stone I am guessing maybe he has smoked too many bowls of sensamillion and has destroyed too many brain cells. I can't imagine anyone not being moved by this movie, well unless they are just completely heartless or emotionless. Some of these reviewers are undoubtedly brain-numbed by watching 100s of movies every month, and this reviewer appears to be a prime example.

We Are Marshall is a true story, and even though parts of the movie may be Hollywoodized, it still reflects the heart and soul of what happened back in 1970 and 1971. Perhaps if time permitted to include Marshall's rise to championship status in the 90s it would have been a more complete metamorphisis, but the movie still is a moving tribute to courage, heart, and the human spirit. Anyone who doesn't have their heartstrings pulled during this movie must be a walking shell of a human being...Mr Travers !

I would urge everyone to see this movie, not because I am a Huntington resident or fan of Marshall, but because it is a good story, a true story, and will reveal a little piece of history that a lot of people know very little about. It will also reveal the heart of a small college and a town who went through tragedy and persevered until they achieved greatness. Watch this movie...you won't be disappointed.

Many of us have heard the story about the terrible plane crash on Nov. 14, 1970, which took the lives of 75 people all of whom had ties to a small West Virginia university named Marshall. The story in itself was interesting. Matthew McConaughey plays Coach Jack Lengyel who was hired to resurrect the football team and with it the spirit of the town. I must admit McConaughey portrayed Lengyel very well and stepped outside the repetitive characters he usually plays in movies and kept his shirt on (cudos to Matt Damon for calling him out on that on David Letterman). Either lack of direction or overall weak script turned this potentially great tribute into a notch just above a made for tv flick. Matthew Fox struggled at times to truly feel his role of Red Dawson, assistant coach to Lengyel and in turn should have given way in script to David Strathairn (school President Donald Dedmon), who does give a decent performance as he struggles to grasp his own sadness from the crash along with rebuilding a program many of the people who hired him dont want rebuilt. Why are people still hiring Anthony Mackie for anything. Lets hope he blossoms into something better as he portrays Jesse Owens in a self titled film due in 2008, didnt we have enough of him in 8 mile and Im sure all 15 people who saw Crossover might offer advice to walk away while he can still leave his home.

I'm from Huntington and I was Extremely Pleased with the movie. Do we know how Jack Lengyel was in 1971 and that Matthew McCanaughey didn't nail his persona?

Peter Travers is trash. I've seen his reviews for movies that are bound to become classics in their fields, and this is for sure one of them. 'We Are Marshall' was undoubtedly one of the best football movies mad in recent memory. Travers spits all over this movie like it's crap. IT is by far one of the best movies out there right now. Screw You Travers

peace and love, joe

It was without surprise that I read the review of this movie by Peter Travers. I have seen the movie, had previously been aware of this unspeakable tragedy, followed the progress of the production, casting and filming via the internet, saw various of the cast members appear on national programs extolling the virtues of the movie and describing in some cases the excellent reception they received while filming in Huntington, and in particular, how they had been personally affected by the story. Hype by the actors? Maybe, but I choose to believe in their sincerety. This was a bad time in a small town; an incident which deserved to be memorialized in this manner. I believe the acting was fine, the story true and the movie was excellent. There comes a time Mr. Travers, when your little reviews do not do justice to the truth, the people and the the story.
