This extraordinary 1986 film captures five years in the life of the pioneering Los Angeles band X. Melding raw punk iconoclasm with rockabilly chops and noir storytelling, the band's members, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, D.J. Bonebrake and Billy Zoom became heroes without asking for the title. The film itself is great art, with montage sequences transmitting as much point-blank power as the music itself.
