It's gross as hell. A doctor (Cary Elwes) and a hothead (Leigh Whannell) are chained up in a basement, and only a saw can get them out. Director James Wan hits the grisly button without shame.

I am big fan of the horror genre. If it is original and smartly executed it works. Saw was a decent idea with horrible acting, dialogue, and had an incredibly messy script. The flashbacks weighed the movie down. Many of the sequences made the suspension of disbelief impossible. Many sequences during the film that were supposed to ignite fear or disgust merely caused laughter for me. This movie was a total failure and represents a hollow, one-layered period in horror film-making that i hope dies out very soon. In fact, i hope it dies with the gruesomeness it exploits.

I am a horror movie fanatic, and I have just discovered that. In
my opinion, "Saw" would have been perfect if not for the
excessive gore, which was clearly there fo mere shock value. Do
not listen to what people tell you however, as they are most
likely to say it's all blood and gore. I wouldn't go as far as to call
it a psychological horror, but the plot does have many levels. If
you are as crazy about horror as I am, then I strongly reccomend
you see this grisly gem.

Saw is,in fact, one of the horror movies that made me twitch the most this year. With each turn at every corner,it builds up some jolting suspense and unleashes a wrath of grisly violence and some unsuspected shocks throughout.Like Peter Travers mentioned,"Director James Wan hits the grisly button without any shame".I like that, since it goes to show how far the director will take a risk so unthinkable.
