Faithless
Starring: Lena Endre, Erland Josephson
Directed by: Hugh Beaumont
1932 Drama
Faithless is a tale of infidelity directed by actress Liv Ullmann from a script by her former lover, the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. The film concerns an aging director (Erland Josephson) who is writing a script in which an actress, Marianne Vogler - Lenda Endre gives a dazzling, emotionally intricate performance - risks her marriage to an orchestra conductor (Thomas Hanzon) for an affair with a film director (Krister Henriksson) with a jealous streak wider than his ego. Bergman, 82, and Ullmann, 61, teamed up on eight film classics, from "Persona" (1966) to "Autumn Sonata" (1978), in the process divorcing their spouses to live together before splitting after five years. This latest collaboration, with Ullmann in the director's chair, supersedes gossip to become a mesmerizing deconstruction of the brute nature of love.
