Jazz at Lincoln Center (J@LC) will honor one of the giants of jazz, pianist John Lewis, on Jan. 18 and 20 in a concert entitled "Evolution--The Music of John Lewis." |Lewis, who has performed infrequently in New York City over the last few years, will display his talents as pianist, conductor, composer and arranger through a program of all original works.

Named for his 1999 solo piano recording Evolution, this concert will begin with Lewis performing solo piano, in a duet with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and in a trio with bassist Percy Heath (a longtime co-member of the Modern Jazz Quartet) and LCJO drummer Herlin Riley.

For the second half of the show, Lewis will conduct the LCJO (joined by pianist Eric Reed and timpanist Warren Smith) in several extended works for large ensemble: "Animal Dance," "The Comedy" and "Three Little Feelings."

Lewis will also receive a 2001 National Endowment for the Arts "American Jazz Masters" award, on Jan. 13, 2001, during the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference in New York. Also, his latest CD, Evolution II, will be released on Jan. 16 on Atlantic Records.

Tickets at $45 are available at the Alice Tully Hall box office, by calling CenterCharge at (212) 721-6500, or via www.jazzatlincolncenter.org.
