"Slight" is too strong a word to apply to this teen spin on Martin Scorsese's After Hours. Peter Sollett, a director with indie cred thanks to his 2002 Raising Victor Vargas debut, takes us on an odyssey into Manhattan's night world that toddles when you ache for it to toot. The script, by Lorene Scafaria, is Afterschool Special 101: Nick (Michael Cera), an alt-rock bassist, makes mixtapes for mean girl Tris (Alexis Dziena), who dumps him. After a gig with his two gay bandmates, Nick meets and falls for Nora (Kat Dennings), who likes his tapes and his yellow Yugo. They drive around the five boroughs looking for her drunk girlfriend (a funny Ari Graynor) and the club where Where's Fluffy are playing a secret concert. I'm yawning just writing this. The compensations are Cera and Dennings, both charmers with a wry way around a comic line. Sollett, hoping for a Before Sunrise/Before Sunset vibe, sadly settles for a soggy aftertaste.

The type of person who wouldn't enjoy this movie includes: extreme conservatists, mormons, and dissasociated old bitter barfbag married for decades; fat asses. It was witty, suprising and the first indie film in ages to NOT pratically quote if not deliberately copy Napoleon Dynamite. It's aesthetically pleasing and captures the magic of a night in the city of young, single, and helplessly vulnerable teenagers. I wanted this movie to take me back in time and relive highschool and as far as a movie could, it did. Not to mention that it included Vampire weekend, we are scientists and more.

Maybe the movie was just different than I was expecting from the previews or maybe it really is as bad as I thought it was. I love Michael Cera but even his awkward charm couldn't save this movie. One of the funniest scenes in the movie is when he tries to open the large doors to a church but they're locked. I didn't care about any of the characters and Michael Cera and Kat Dennings move far to quickly from arguing to getting along to falling in love. The bottom line is that this movie sucked and for an infinite playlist the music wasn't that great.

So, Peter Travers is just phoning it in, eh? Not one mention of the fantastic YA book that Nick & Norah is based on. Way to research. Although there may be shades of Scorsese's After Hours, I find it completely unfair to boil this film down to just a pale imitation of a movie that isn't remotely related. Seriously, dude, you disappoint me. Give credit where credit is due.
