You Don't Mess With the Zohan
Starring: Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Mariah Carey, Shelley Berman, Sayed Badreya
Directed by: Dennis Dugan
2008 Sony Pictures Action
It's the Middle East crisis played for laughs, and it gets a few until the movie backs off its bolder notions. That's a shame, because Sandler, buff, blow-dried and Borat-accented, is clearly having a ball playing a Jewish superhero. Ditto John Turturro as Zohan's Arab counterpart, the Phantom. "You think you can oppress my people, land-grabber?" shrieks the Phantom, and suddenly the movie is a microcosm of Arab-Israeli relations taken out of context and wrapped in comic absurdity. What the Marx brothers could have made of that!
What Zohan makes of it is a sentimental hash that director Dennis Dugan tries to deflect with crude sight gags. Sandler (no hair homo, he) stuffs his crotch and starts shtupping the old ladies whose hair he shags. The joke is right out The Producers, screen and stage, and doesn't profit from punishing repetition. By the end of the film, the cliché of everybody getting along is reduced to both sides working together in the ultimate monument to capitalism: a mall. Some message.

This movie was horrible, I love Adam Sandler but this movie was not funny at all. If it wasnt for partial nudity, sex and some adult political view points, I'd say this movie was made for little kids. Its way over exaggerated, unreal, and honestly I was expecting a little better from Adam Sandler. I dont think I've laughed once through the movie. I just thought it was really stupid.

Made to entertain, this film is a very funny well written comedy, I laughed all the way through. It galvanises middle east politics both in Israel and the US into a macenroe-esque haven of NYC...+when you listen carefully subtle undercurrent of one-liners it only helps to keep the tempo flowing..I can't wait to see it again!
Authenticity comes in the guise of israeli beach-life including macho-tongue in cheek beach ball game with grenades..while it manages to use interesting analogies to tackle deep political tensions its all in keeping with typical Sandler style.
In real life its blatantly obvious that suppose Adam Sandler and his newly appointed team were elected to run the Whitehouse (instead of Bush-monkey) you could say "shalom" to Mutually Assured Destruction days and look forward to "Zohan" hitting the DVD market just before Christmas.

I love Adam Sandler. Usually. But this was such absolute trash and in such bad taste that I would not be surprised it it damages his reputation. Sure it got some laughs in the beginning, but then deteriorated into mindless, forced humour. It does not even deserve a one star rating ...

First of all, this film is hilarious.
Secondly, in response to other reader reviews on this page, it's not a political film, it's a comedy that takes the micky out of the middle east. If you look to Adam Sandler for your political commentary then what do you expect?
Back to point one. This film is very very very funny from start to finish, it's stupid and it has no pretensions of being otherwise, as said above 'it's an Adam SAndler film'
It's actually so funny that after crying with laughter for most of the film my eyeballs were sore for 24 hours afterwards!
in Summary, Brilliant film, no political message should be expected.

‘Zohan’ plays more like a spoof than anything else, and as a spoof it has its moments of scenes that are mildly funny, (but then again, so did ‘Epic Movie’), but for the most part it's a heavy-handed pile of unsatisfying and tasteless hummus.
The film tries to have a message, but it beats you over the head with it. Everything in this film is over-the-top, and I didn't mind when I first started watching it. But being repeatedly hit with over the top material, like Zohan's (Sandler) 'escapades' with his 'clients', gets old, especially if it's not really funny. As a result, I found myself not laughing a lot during this movie, and just sort of staring at the silliness on the screen.
Once in a while, like the scene where The Phantom (John Tuturro) is cracking raw eggs into a glass as a protein drinks, and instead of yolks, full formed chicks drop out and he swallows them, I chuckled. But these jokes were too few and far between for me to recommend this film. For laughs look elsewhere, this Zohan is a mess.
