It's amazing that Neil Young's hippie passion is not only still alive but that he's still coming up with original, vital ways to express it. On paper, Greendale sounds like some unworkable vanity project -- actors (mostly Young's friends) lip-sync along to Young's recent concept album about media overkill and environmental activism in Northern California. But Young pulls it off. The story might not exactly hang together, but it's infused with Young's inimitable spirit -- part stoner idealist, part old crank.
