Deep Purple were one of the biggest acts in America when they took the stage in front of 200,000 fans at California Jam, with new singer David Coverdale practically crapping his too-tight trousers. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore seems less a menace than a petulant ponce, but organist Jon Lord delivers a gloriously evil "Space Truckin'." Riveting and ridiculous, the Purp's performance makes the need for punk crystal-clear.
