Resisting the chick-flick premise of this live-and-learn Curtis Hanson (8 Mile) film is self-defeating. Prim lawyer Rose (Toni Collette) and her party-hearty sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) have nothing in common but a shoe size (8 1/2) and a long-lost grandma (Shirley MacLaine). The first half is a slow build, but it's worth sticking around to see Ken Howard (The White Shadow), as their hen-pecked dad, and Diaz quoting the poetry of E.E. Cummings in the finale.
