Fahrenheit 9/11
Starring: Michael Moore, George W. Bush
Directed by: Michael Moore
2004 Lions Gate Documentary
As Election Day nears, the bonus-packed DVD of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 adds more ammo to the case against George W. Bush. But even if Dubya gets re-elected, there's no discounting the power of Moore's ferocious, cathartically funny film. It's the highest-grossing documentary in movie history, and oddsmakers claim it may become the first doc ever to be Oscar-nominated for Best Picture. What makes it great is the way Moore indicts hypocrisy across all party lines. The film's theme? Political expediency and who gets to die for it. Watch the scene in which Moore rallies members of Congress to get their own children to enlist in the Iraq war. Or listen to Lila Lipscomb, the mother of a soldier who died in Iraq. The DVD is superior in sound and image to what was shown at the multiplex. Besides sharp commentary from Moore, who likes to rile folks up, the featurette on the controversy the film provoked is time-capsule-worthy.
