The pairing sounds ideal: Author James Ellroy meets director Brian De Palma, but like the last U.S. Dream Team, this falls flat. The complex plot doesn't translate well to the screen. And while Aaron Eckhart is excellent, Josh Hartnett is not credible as a macho L.A. cop, and Hilary Swank is laughably bad as the femme fatale.
