A study in the contrasting elements of modern masculinity, New York's From Autumn to Ashes are torn between emo's impulse toward the heartfelt and metalcore's urge to shred. Vocalist Benjamin Perri growls and screams like a demon possessed, while drummer Francis Mark croons the melodic alt-rock verses. Over the course of three full-lengths, the band's command of the delicate balance between those modes has improved substantially. Abandon Your Friends includes some of FATA's most singable tunes to date ("Long to Go"), as well as some of their most moshable ("Placentapede"), sometimes within the same song ("Inapprope") -- proving that schizophrenic isn't always a bad thing.
