Gallagher (1948-1995) was the Irish Eric Clapton, without the hits. In his own late-Sixties Cream, the power trio Taste, and then as a prolific solo artist, Gallagher electrified his passion for Deep South blues with a feral attack spiked by vicious and precise bent-string screams. Some of his best recorded moments are, in fact, missing here ("Walk on Hot Coals," "Hands Off"). But every one of these Guns testifies to the road-warrior fire he brought to stage ("Bullfrog Blues") and studio ("Shadow Play") alike, to the end.
