Johnson appears to think that his smooth acoustic surfer music might need a retooling to reflect this scary new world. He still sounds mellow 'n' yellow on escapist cuts like "Banana Pancakes," and he occasionally still fakes a Caribbean accent that's groovy for Harry Belafonte but not for dudes as white as Johnson. But on "Crying Shame" and "Staple It Together," he attacks warmongers and the chronically denial-ridden. Don't try to take his waves, either!

That review is awful and completely unjustified!
This is an amazing album with nearly every song having the potential to be a single!
The live track (mudfootball) proves that JJ is a good enough artist to sing live unlike many artists nowadays, which when you considerg he wrote the songs himself just shows that artists of his calibre are a truly dying breed!
Anyone thinking of buying this album: ignore the 'review' offered by Barry and buy it! it is a purchase you will never regret!

Okay, first of all I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. With that said, I want to add that Barry Walters is a moron. I'm confused if he even listened to the album before he wrote his harsh review on Jack. For the small group of Jack haters out there: Jack Johnson is one of the best song writers, next to Bob Marley. Ciao

I am not at all pleased with this review. in short, they hacked
it. though i agree that the album as a whole, is not fabulous,
but you can not deny that this album contains some of his
best written material to date. the catchy melodies of hits like
sitting, wishing, waiting and banana pancakes dont entirely
make up for the fact that they're a little weak in content, but
who cares? why do we constantly need to be bombarded by
messages in our music? sometimes its just nice to listen to a
nice song. a song that is just pleasant to listen to and nothing
more. i also have yet to spot this "fake carribean accent" you
speak of. constellations is probably the most beutiful song
he's written. well thought out and full of powerful imagery it
closes the album perfectly.
in regards to knocking him for talking about the war, who are
you, at rolling stone, to knock anyone for bashing the war
when you had nothing but praise for Green Day and their
useless "war is bad and people die" message. i disaprove
greatly of the war but i would hope for a deeper message than
that. im tired of the mindless musical war bashing too, but i
just dont think anyone at your magazine is in any place to
criticise him for that.
