Adam Green proved on 2003's lovely and hilarious Friends of Mine that he could meld the endearingly childish humor of his former band the Moldy Peaches with real songwriting chops. Which is why Gemstones is such a letdown. Kitschy lyrics spin out of control here: Tracks such as the quasi-political rant "Choke on a Cock" wallow in lewd, sophomoric misery without the over-the-top melodies that redeemed Friends. When the subject matter does rise above cocks and crack, as in the honky-tonk ballad "Losing on a Tuesday" or the tongue-twistingly giddy "Down on the Street," we are reminded of Green's potential, but it's too little, too late.
