You might hear a random Turkish woman on the phone. But Jason Moran, the pianist who's shaping up to be the most provocative thinker in current jazz, hears a rhapsody. On "Ringing My Phone (Straight Outta Istanbul)," one of several new originals on this live-at-the-Village Vanguard album, Moran and his flexible-flying rhythm section configure halting, fragmentary melodies around a tape-looped phone conversation. Another highlight: a fantasia based on Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock."
