Since 1998's Teenage Hate, Memphian Jay "Reatard" Lindsey, 29, has spit enough pissed-off, low-fi garage punk to become DIY royalty. This set follows a string of singles (including a killer cover of Beck's "Gamma Ray") and shows him letting his primitivist guard down. The opener is pure Reatarded punk pop, his pinched New Wave bark declaring, "In this bedroom/Is where I sit/'Cause I don't really/Give a shit!" But there's also choral sugar, dub effects, sweet guitar cascades and mad hooks. On the majestic closer, alongside a sad cello, he insists, "There is no sun." With sound this blazingly bright, who needs it?
