Noisy, atonal and menacing, Unknown Instructors are a supergroup revolving around one of the fiercest rhythm sections of early-Eighties L.A. punk: bassist Mike Watt and his Minutemen partner, drummer George Hurley. Along with guitarist Joe Baiza, another veteran of SoCal punk, they lay down sinewy bass lines, muscular, syncopated drums and prickly guitars for the spoken-word musings of guests like Pere Ubu's David Thomas. Funland isn't conventionally pretty, but the trio have come up with the perfect noir soundtrack for looming pandemics and worldwide economic collapse.
