On their second album, Goldfrapp swerve away from the elegant trip-hop of their debut and begin to throb, buzz and blurt. Black Cherry is both retro and futuristic, like vintage synth pop heard through a wall of distortion. Tons of bands imitate the sounds of the early Eighties, but Goldfrapp use New Wave as a way to evoke a long history of shiny Euro-lounge music: On the title track, Alison Goldfrapp sighs like a holographic echo of a Weimar-era cabaret singer.
