Freeway's wheezy raps sometimes sound like someone being strangled. And the Philadelphia he describes on his debut is certainly suffocating, whether it's because of violence ("He said Mohammed walked with a sword/I roll with a gat") or just desperation ("If my kid's hungry/Snatch the dishes out your kitchen"). Lyrically, Freeway never once lifts the veil of darkness that envelops Philadelphia Freeway, and he's supported by the most accomplished set of beats in recent hip-hop memory, from an array of Just Blaze's aggro post-blaxploitation funk ("What We Do," "We Get Around") to a morose Eddie Money sample on the stunning "Life" to Kanye West's electrified mojo on "Turn Out Your Lights." These are comeback sounds, saving the desperately hollering Freeway from the bottom of the well and redeeming him.
