On their debut — which is already a hit at home in England — these not-so-unlikely lads from West London sound like Joy Division fans with Coldplay-size ambitions. White Lies' polished synth rock effuses more melodrama than any young group should be allotted: To Lose My Life is full of pulsating bass lines and high-def keyboard atmospherics, underpinning singer Harry McVeigh's arena-ready wail and gothed-out lyrics. McVeigh's melodies are nearly as handsome as the man himself, and on the hard-charging "Death" he makes "this fear's got a hold on me" into a rousing, cathartic refrain. But many of McVeigh's ponderous, hyperserious lyrics — "Let's grow old together/And die at the same time" — would make even Ian Curtis snicker.
