The first album of original material in eight years from former Mavericks frontman Raul Malo runs from Latin-tinged rock to Rat Pack balladry to contemporary Nashville sounds. Too bad Lucky One is dragged down by his heavy hand. Fifties-pop numbers like "Moonlight Kiss" get by on pure catchiness, but schmaltz is a problem, especially on slow ones such as "So Beautiful," where he drops clichés such as "In an ever-changing world, some things never do." Elsewhere, Malo's like a dude hugging you a little too long, using his big pipes — which often recall George Jones and Roy Orbison — to reverently over-sing the ballad "Crying for You."
