Thanks to an iPod ad, Chairlift had a modest hit last year with their single "Bruises" (you know, that cute tune about doing all those "handstands for you"). On their debut album, this Brooklyn trio reveal they've got some bite: Singer Caroline Polachek delivers PJ Harvey-worthy tales about coke-addled boyfriends, mice-infested apartments and having sex in a "forest full of lungs" with her sweet, opera-trained voice. The tunes go down smooth, ranging from breezy exercises in Eighties-excess synth pop to country-tinged reveries. The hottest track here: "Le Flying Saucer Hat," a surreal French-language romp that Salvador Dalí would've loved.
