The most unlikely Billboard chart-topper in memory, the Juno soundtrack was centered on the uncombed, heartbreaking, hilariously frank songcraft of Kimya Dawson, whose hitches her deceptively childlike wit to addictive, folksy melody. With additional tracks by Belle & Sebastian and Buddy Holly, it was a near-perfect playlist of hummable vulnerability. This version adds a second disc that plays like a slightly lesser version of the first, with more material by Dawson (including the inspirational rant "Viva La Persistence") and kiddie music romantic Barry Louis Polisar ("Me and You"), plus assorted indie-rock chestnuts (Yo La Tengo's sweetly uplifting "You Can Have It All"). Like the movie, the set confirms that smarts and refined musical taste won't protect you from life's pain. But they'll help you savor the sadness.
