As despairing frontmen go, Gareth Campesinos is pretty damn entertaining. On Los Campesinos' second LP, he sings about puking in a Mexican restaurant and fucking up some dude's teeth, but he makes those lyrics sound almost uplifting thanks to a supercharged mix of violins, guitars and glockenspiel: Dig the swelling, string-based squall of "Miserabilia." And the tunes don't quit: On "Ways to Make It Through the Wall," Gareth and co-vocalist Aleksandra Campesinos deliver a catchy chorus with a sugar-rush feel. Subject of song: catastrophe.
